Located in the Japan Sea northwest of Hokkaido Island, there are two islands called Teuri Island and Yagishiri Island. You can reach the islands by ferry or high-speed boat from Haboro Town in Hokkaido Island. Teuri Island is about a 1 hour and 45-minute ferry ride or 1-hour high-speed boat ride from Yagishiri Island. It's an easily accessible island from Hokkaido Island.
Teuri Island is a remote island to the west of Yagishiri Island. It is approximately 12 km in circumference, similar in size to Yagishiri Island but slightly longer from east to west. Compared to other inhabited islands in Hokkaido, Teuri Island is closer to Hokkaido Island and can be visited in a day trip. However, once you cross the sea, you enter a completely different world from the main island.
It is a paradise for seabirds, with the symbol of the island being the "Steller's Sea Eagle" and other seabirds such as Spectacled Guillemots, Common Guillemots, Black-tailed Gulls, and Japanese Cormorants nesting there. Human habitation is concentrated in the eastern to northeast part of the island, while the western part remains untouched, offering various breathtaking views.
You can explore the island by scooter, taking about 2 hours to fully enjoy the stunning scenery. After circling the island, you can have lunch at the charcoal-grilled seafood restaurant called "Banya" and check into a local inn called "Minshuku Sakemaru."
Minshuku Sakemaru is one of the ten or so accommodation options on Teuri Island. It is a fisherman's inn where the father catches fish, and the mother cooks delicious seafood dishes. The mother is warm and friendly, creating a cozy atmosphere for guests.
The inn provides traditional amenities such as futons, yukatas, toothbrushes, towels, and bath towels. The first floor has shared living spaces and a communal bath area, while the second floor has a small hall serving as a smoking area. Guests can enjoy self-service tea, water, and instant coffee. The inn also has a vending machine and a shared refrigerator.
The guest rooms are on the second floor, with a 6-tatami mat room offering a view of the sea. The dinner options include a seafood barbecue on a covered outdoor terrace or a set meal served in the room, depending on the season. During the Golden Week holidays in May, we had a room-service dinner.
The dinner consisted of sashimi (octopus, scallops, surf clams), simmered baby squid, simmered flounder, vinegar-marinated seaweed and mushrooms, and a salmon roe and salmon bowl. The grilled seafood platter included scallops, sweet shrimp, squid, and octopus. The octopus was particularly delicious when lightly grilled and served with wasabi soy sauce. The sweet shrimp was also grilled and served with a touch of wasabi soy sauce.
Overall, the dinner was a delightful experience with a variety of fresh seafood dishes.
