I tried the dumplings from Ichien Western-Style Food, and they were beautifully presented as Kabuki dumplings. I couldn't resist buying them after seeing them in the showcase. I purchased a set of three flavors: matcha, white, and red bean paste. They were delicious with just the right amount of sweetness and a nice chewy texture. I would definitely buy them again if given the chance.

I visited in the early afternoon on a regular day. They sell their products at the storefront, and there is a small bench where you can sit and eat. I was torn between getting the Sakura Mochi or the Puru-chan for 600 yen, but ended up choosing the Puru-chan. I thought it would be like anmitsu, but it turned out to be a type of jelly where everything was integrated together. The condensed milk was not too sweet, with a mild sweetness. I still want to try the Sakura Mochi that I was undecided about. ^_^

These cute sweet bean paste balls with chewy mochi inside can be eaten in one bite. They are cute and delicious, making them a great souvenir. However, please note that they only last for three days, including the purchase date. There are three different flavors available, and you can mix and match them. They also have skewered dumplings for eating on the go, making the selection process enjoyable.

Every time I passed by this shop, I was captivated by the round shape of the anko (sweet red bean paste) and was curious about it. I always wondered if they only sold boxed items, so I usually just passed by. But upon closer inspection, I found out that they sell skewered dumplings! So, I finally made my debut this time. They had three types of skewered dumplings: Kabuki Dango (black bean paste, white bean paste, matcha bean paste), Matcha Skewer (two matcha bean paste), and Gion no Tsuki (black bean paste, white bean paste, black bean paste). I chose the Kabuki Dango for ¥250. I wanted to try them all, so I went for the Kabuki Dango! The layer of anko was firmer than I expected, which made me happy. The dumpling was soft, and the combination with anko was excellent. The taste of the anko was also rich. The matcha bean paste seemed to use high-quality matcha, as it had a strong bitter taste. The Matchbox product was cute, so I thought it would be a great souvenir that people would appreciate. ♡

The "Kabuki Dango" consists of three colored dumplings: sweet bean paste, white bean paste, and matcha. The three colors represent the colors of the traditional Kabuki theater curtains. The matchboxes come in three different designs, each with a different picture on the front and back. You can enjoy the dumplings on a skewer at the shop. On this day, I saw foreign tourists eating them outside. The matcha filling made with Marukyu Koyamaen's green tea has a nice balance of bitterness and is delicious.

I spotted some delicious Japanese sweets in Gion and my feet stopped. There were dumplings and steamed buns lined up, but what caught my eye was the cherry blossom mochi. Having just been healed by the cherry blossoms during hanami, I decided to indulge in more cherry blossoms here. I purchased the cherry blossom mochi for 250 yen. I love cherry blossom mochi, and this one was no exception, it was delicious. I informed them that I would eat it right away, and they served it on a dessert plate. I enjoyed it on the bench inside the store. Thank you for the meal. I will definitely go back!

I tried the Kabuki dango at a street vendor. They come in three flavors: red bean, white, and matcha, and all of them are delicious! Some are sold in retro matchboxes, which is cute and makes a great souvenir. They last for about 3 days. I also want to try ohagi.

I visited a traditional Japanese confectionery shop near Minami-za in Gion, Kyoto today. The shop, Fukueido, is known for its Kabuki-style dango, called "Kabuki Dango," and their popular product "Gion no Tsuki." Inside the shop, they sold various traditional Japanese sweets like Mizunogoshi, anmitsu, and ohagi. I purchased the "Gion no Tsuki" which came in a retro-style matchbox packaging. The price varied depending on the content, with black and white dango priced at 550 yen, black, white, and green dango at 600 yen, and green dango at 600 yen. I bought the black, white, and green version and took it home. The colorful bite-sized dango was made with Marukyu Koyamaen's matcha, giving it a rich flavor. The mochi-like texture of the sweet bean paste inside was enjoyable. The white and black bean paste were also delicious. It was a perfect snack, with enough for two people in one box. The matchbox design of "Gion no Tsuki" is intricate and would make a great souvenir from Kyoto!

I was curious about Puruko-chan, so I decided to try it out! You can eat it inside the store. I had it with condensed milk on top, which was very sweet and delicious. The matcha flavor was also great. It was a tasty treat! ♥︎

After visiting Yasaka Shrine for the "Okearimairi" ritual, I bought some souvenirs. The shop is located across from the Minami-za Kabuki Theater. It's convenient because it's open until midnight on weekdays. It seems to have the same management as the origin of okonomiyaki, "Ichien Western Food," established in 1950. Even though it was around 10 pm on the 31st, most shops on Shijo Street were closed, but "Fukueido" was open. Thank you! ◼️ Gion no Tsuki (18 pieces) for 1,700 yen. The red bean paste represents the moon, while the white bean paste represents the clouds, creating an elegant appearance. (They also have matcha, green, and tricolor options.) The smooth bean paste doesn't stick in your throat, making it easy to eat. The mochi is soft, and there's a generous amount of bean paste that you can barely taste the mochi. It's perfect for enjoying with tea during intermissions. Thank you for the delicious treat!

Fukueido is a shop that stays open late into the night, located diagonally across from Issen Western Food in Gion. One of the shops that visitors to Gion are sure to see. They sell traditional Japanese sweets such as three-color dumplings and sakuramochi, but this time I tried the "Puruko-chan" for 600 yen. It consists of matcha jelly, black sugar jelly, shiratama (rice flour dumplings), and sweet red bean paste set in a large container, all solidified with transparent agar. It also comes with condensed milk in a separate container. The matcha jelly is mildly sweet, while the black sugar jelly has a strong black sugar aroma. Eating the jellies together with the sweet red bean paste is refreshing and delicious. Adding condensed milk changes the taste, adding a creamy richness. I personally preferred this combination. I initially thought 600 yen was a bit expensive, but considering the generous portion and the refreshing cold treat, I found it worth it even after a meal. The packaging is well done, making it a good souvenir option as well. Thank you for the meal!

Fukueido is a traditional Japanese confectionery shop located a 3-5 minute walk from Gion Shijo Station. It is situated along Hanamikoji Street and is bustling with people due to its proximity to the Minamiza Kabuki Theater. Their specialty menu item, Kabuki Dango, is quite popular. I tried the 6-piece Kabuki Dango set, which came in a vintage matchbox-like container. The dango balls were filled with white bean paste, black bean paste, and matcha bean paste, creating a beautiful three-color presentation. The balance between the bean paste and chewy mochi inside was exquisite. The smooth sweetness of the bean paste was followed by the chewy texture of the mochi, creating a delicious combination. In addition to Kabuki Dango, they offer a variety of other Japanese sweets, making it a great place to visit. Thank you for the meal!

On this day, I finally decided to enter a shop that I have passed by hundreds of times but never actually went in. It's a common situation, right? I went into Fukueido, located across from Issen Yoshoku in Gion. Despite thinking it might be just another tourist-oriented place, Fukueido actually had high ratings. I bought ohagi and sakuramochi this time. The ohagi came in three flavors: smooth red bean paste, chunky red bean paste, and chestnut. There was a special sign indicating they were only available for a limited time, so maybe they don't usually sell them? Both the chestnut and red bean paste were elegantly sweet, and I could eat them endlessly. The sakuramochi had a perfect balance between the smooth red bean paste inside and the salted cherry blossom leaf, making it very delicious. Since I pass by the shop frequently, I plan to buy the popular Gion no Tsuki next time. Thank you for the meal!

Located just 3-4 minutes from Gion-Shijo Station in Kyoto, on a convenient corner of the bustling Gion shopping street, is a standout traditional Japanese confectionery shop called "Fukueido." Even if the name doesn't ring a bell, you've probably passed by it numerous times at the intersection. It's right across from the well-known "Isen Western Cuisine" restaurant. Despite its small storefront, Fukueido exudes a refined and Kyoto-esque atmosphere. Established 80 years ago, it is relatively new compared to other traditional Kyoto confectionery shops (which can have histories spanning over 500 years). You can enter the shop from both Shijo Street and the Daiwado-ji side where Isen is located, making it easily accessible. I had been curious about this shop for a while, so I decided to stop by after a Kyoto lunch. I couldn't resist the seasonal offerings, so I chose a variety of items. The shop offers single pieces for purchase, which is convenient. I got the following items:
- Ohagi (1 piece for 250 yen): I bought one with smooth red bean paste and one with whole red bean paste because I love both varieties.
- Chestnut Ohagi (1 piece for 300 yen): A limited-time offering made with two types of Japanese chestnuts. I had to try this one!
- Sakura Mochi (1 piece for 250 yen): A lovely sakura mochi with a salted cherry blossom on top. It's a delightful treat to enjoy during this season.
Even just one piece of these elegant Kyoto-style confections makes for a great souvenir for yourself or someone else. The shop's signature item, "Gion no Tsuki" in a matchbox, is also charming. This area is filled with souvenir shops, but you can't go wrong with a gift from Fukueido that will surely be appreciated by anyone.

The first impression is like a giant version of Matsuyama's Botchan Dango from Ehime Prefecture. As a big fan of sweet bean paste, I couldn't resist trying it. The three colors of paste are red bean paste, white bean paste, and matcha bean paste. Now, for the taste test... All of them have a moderate sweetness and a refined flavor. My favorite was the matcha bean paste. The matcha paste made with green tea leaves has a strong matcha flavor that lingers even after finishing it. The taste of matcha spreads from the mouth to the back of the throat. If I had to say, without changing the overall size, making the mochi a bit smaller and increasing the amount of bean paste would be more stomach-friendly and balanced.

I received a gift and will refrain from mentioning the amount spent. When I opened the souvenir box, delicious-looking dumplings appeared. I immediately tried them. The three-colored dumplings all had a gentle and tasty flavor. Personally, I think the matcha dumpling was my favorite. They were all delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Gion no Tsuki - Taste ★ 3.8
Very delicious. Inside the sweet bean paste, there is a rice cake. The bean paste is finely textured and elegant. The rice cake is chewy. It has just the right amount of sweetness and is easy to eat. The bite-size is also a plus.
If I have the chance, I might buy it myself next time. Thank you for the meal.

Gion no Tsuki - Three-color dumplings for 230 yen (tax included) with red bean paste, white bean paste, and matcha bean paste. All three have finely textured bean paste that melts in your mouth. The lingering scent of matcha at the end is wonderful! There were also two-color options with red bean and white bean paste, but not trying the matcha would be a shame. The rice cake has a good texture, and it pairs well with the bean paste that disappears smoothly. This dumpling is the strongest contender in dumpling history with so many points to recommend it. I was truly amazed the moment I took a bite.
