On March 19, 2022 (Saturday), I visited the main store of "Nagasaki-Do" located in Shinsaibashi, Osaka for the first time. This renowned shop has been loved for over 100 years and is famous for its Castella cakes in Osaka. It is located east of the Shinsaibashi shopping street, towards the European street. Please note that this shop is completely unrelated to the shop of the same name in Nagasaki Prefecture. The shop has been operating in this location since 1951, and the current store is still relatively new with a beautiful all-white exterior made of what seems to be white plaster. The calm and sophisticated atmosphere is great! When I visited after 2 p.m., there was only one other group of customers. You can leisurely shop in the quiet store. There is also a cafe space inside where you can enjoy Castella and seasonal Japanese sweets with drinks like coffee. Unfortunately, I had to skip it this time due to my schedule. The Castella cake, priced at 550 yen, is well-known for its appearance in the novel "Crushing Strawberries" by Seiko Tanabe. This Castella cake is made without baking powder, using only the power of eggs and sugar to naturally bake it. The simple ingredients of flour, eggs, sugar, and syrup are carefully selected, resulting in a moist and smooth texture that is elegant and delicious. It was very tasty. Thank you for the meal.

Received as a gift. === ◆ Cream sandwiched between waffle-shaped cookies. Soft and crispy cookie dough with plenty of eggs. The cream is thinly spread and doesn't overpower, which is nice. Not too sweet. Consistently delicious. Just the right size. Perfect for tea time. === Thank you for the meal.

The old man from Kobe, when it comes to castella, it's gotta be Bun○do, but this time at the service area, I snatched one up and brought it back. The old man, not with black coffee but with hot black tea, cut it nicely for me. Let's dig in! Huh? Something's weird... Ahh, almost ate the bottom cardboard too! From the second piece, I'll savor the crispy cardboard along with it. This castella has a light texture, I prefer it a bit denser, but occasionally eating castella is delicious! Thank you for the meal!

Visited in July 2021 with a rating of 3.19 on Tabelog (based on 71 reviews). Received a delicious-looking souvenir from "Nagasaki-do Main Store," which was a matcha Castella cake. The packaging was green, indicating the matcha flavor, and inside were five pieces of cake. The texture was between moist and dry, and the matcha flavor was just right, not too strong or too weak. It seems they use matcha from Kyoto. Personally, I prefer a slightly moister texture, but it's all a matter of preference. Since my family doesn't eat Castella cake, I enjoyed it all by myself. Thank you for the meal!

I visited the long-established castella (sponge cake) shop "Nagasaki Do Honpo" located east of Shinsaibashi Shopping Street in Europe Street. This shop has been around for 100 years and is known for its delicious castella. I purchased a set of three items for a baby shower gift, which included personalized castella, dorayaki (red bean pancake), and waffles. I didn't take a photo of the personalized castella, but you can check out the shop's dishes, drinks, atmosphere, and recommended points on Instagram, LINE official, Facebook (for smartphones), or the following URL (for PCs): https://lucky-luckizo.com/blog/30101.html.

It's been over a decade now. After finishing a job with a celebrity train company in Kansai (laughs), the lovely lady who was in charge at the time gave me a pure white handkerchief and sugar confectionery on the last day. The sugar confectionery had colorful hues, each with its own unique liqueur flavor, and I thought it was a fantastic selection, but I forgot where the confectionery came from. Over these past ten years, I've been itching to know where that confectionery came from. This time, as I was flipping through a magazine before my long-awaited trip to Osaka, I thought, "Ah! This is it!" ... and it turns out to be Crystal Bonbons. In today's standards, the naming may sound silly, but in my memory, it had quite an elegant taste. So, this time, I visited the flagship store in Shinsaibashi for the first time and made a purchase. When I tasted it at home, I was briefly disappointed, thinking, "Was it this light in flavor?" The item I received from the lovely lady and the one I bought myself are indeed different. However, after letting it sit for a while and savoring it, hints of anise, maraschino, and Cointreau could be faintly felt, and it was indeed elegantly delicious. I was once again impressed by the taste of the person who selected it for me when it first came out. This weekend, while reading the novel "Crushing Strawberries" by Seiko Tanabe, which apparently features this item, I plan to savor it again. I wonder how she is doing now?

I got off at Shinsaibashi for the first time in a while to buy souvenirs requested by my family. The souvenir I bought is called Nagasaki-do, which is a castella with a name that doesn't really match the image of Osaka. The main store is actually located here in Shinsaibashi. The shop has a very stylish and modern exterior, which was quite different from what I expected in Osaka. According to the small booklet that comes with the castella, the shop was founded in the Meiji era in Nagasaki, and later expanded to Osaka in 1924. This year marks their 100th anniversary, so congratulations to them. To celebrate this milestone, they have collaborated with other shops and companies to release special products. The first collaboration was with Marufuku Coffee in Osaka's Sennichimae, resulting in a coffee-flavored castella. As soon as I opened the package, the delicious aroma of coffee filled the air. The castella was very tasty and came in a convenient size that could be easily finished by a family of three without getting bored. I also purchased Crystal Bonbons, which are sugar candies with three different flavors and scents, similar to old whiskey bonbons. When you bite into them, the liqueur bursts out. My family had heard about these candies from a website and were excited to try them. Although they were more interested in the candies, I personally preferred the castella. The Bonbons are a popular item at the store and are limited to two per person at the main and Sumiyoshi stores, and cannot be purchased at the online shop. The retro and cute packaging of the Bonbons even made me think they could be cosmetics. The candies are mentioned in a novel by Seiko Tanabe, and a part of the text is included in the package. Going back to the collaborations, there are more to come, including red ball port wine and a collaboration with Morinaga Confectionery.

Located southeast of Shinsaibashi Station in Chuo-ku, Osaka, is the store of Nagasaki-ya Co., Ltd., founded in 1919. They operate three brands: Nagasaki-ya, Kurofune, and Zenkasouin. This is the main store of Nagasaki-ya. Today's snack ★ Nagasaki-ya Castella Assortment. Each box contains 5 slices of castella, and there are 2 boxes in total. The pre-cut slices are easy to handle. The castella has a gentle sweetness and a fluffy, moist texture, making it delicious. Thank you for the meal ❤️ (⁎ᵕᴗᵕ⁎)

I love Mont Blanc desserts and when I hinted at wanting some, they bought some for me (*´▽`*) Despite the traditional Japanese wrapping paper, the dessert came in a modern yellow box with gold wrapping paper! When I opened it, I found a vacuum-sealed pack of Mont Blanc that had a mushy texture. Unfortunately, this was not the Mont Blanc I was expecting. I prefer the French version with dry sugar coating and plump chestnuts, so this soft and mushy version felt like a fake to me! I love Mont Blanc desserts, so if anyone knows where I can buy the authentic French version, please let me know (*^^*)

The Shinsaibashi main store has a somewhat retro feel to it. The interior is stylish and modern, with a cafe space as well. They have collaboration products to celebrate their 100th anniversary, such as "Nagasakido x Morinaga Cocoa Castella" and "Nagasakido x Marufuku Coffee Shop Coffee Castella" (540 yen including tax), which are limited edition items and will be discontinued once sold out. The packaging is cute too. They offer three types of traditional castella cakes: Castella, Matcha Castella, and Brown Sugar Castella (5 slices for 540 yen including tax). We tried the normal Castella (5 slices for 540 yen including tax), which has a fluffy and fine texture. It is not too sweet, moist, and smooth, making it easy to eat as much as you want.

There is a shop on Suoumachi Street in Shinsaibashi. I have visited a few times before, but I went back after a long time. This time, I bought a set of castella and pudding. The castella has a gentle taste and is suitable as a snack or a side dish for highball and other Western liquors. The taste of the castella itself is not very rich, but rather light. That's why I thought it would go well as a side dish for alcohol. The pudding was quite ordinary. The castella from this shop has always been good, and the taste has not changed. I enjoyed it.

The main store of Nagasaki-ya in Shinsaibashi, Osaka, felt a bit strange. The white-themed exterior stands out from the surrounding busy shops. As expected from Nagasaki-ya, the main focus is on castella cake, but they also offer a variety of other sweets that made it hard to decide.

I went to buy Rainbow Crystals and Crystal Bonbons. It took me a while to find the shop, passing by a few times before finally arriving. Anyway, they look so shiny and sparkly! The Rainbow Crystals have a crunchy exterior and a jelly-like interior made of agar. There are five colors and flavors: orange, mint, violet, peach, and lemon. They are all sweet with a subtle difference in taste. Even though I'm not a fan of mint, the hint of mint in these was not overwhelming at all. The Crystal Bonbons come in three flavors: anise, Cointreau, and maraschino. They are so cute to look at. When you break the crispy candy shell, a smooth liqueur flows out. I'm not a big fan of anise, but I think it balances well with the orange of Cointreau and the cherry blossom-like scent of maraschino. Both of these sweets are elegant and not the type you would devour quickly. Just one or two at a time is satisfying. They are so cute that just looking at them lifts your mood. They would make a great gift or souvenir. If you're in Osaka, they would be perfect for gifting. I happened to find both of them when I visited the store in Osaka, but it seems that Crystal Bonbons are not always available on display, so if you're planning to visit the store while traveling, it might be a good idea to check with the store beforehand.

I ordered the Castella set! It was fluffy and delicious. Luckily, there was a vacant table so I was seated right away. However, the restaurant has limited seating so it might be difficult for large groups to dine together.

I tried waffles for the first time. It has a lighter taste compared to others. The cream inside is soft and sweet. The outer part melts in your mouth. It feels "light" overall.
