We visited Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto to pray for my son's success in the entrance exam, and also bought "Chogoro Mochi" at the main store of Chogoro Mochi Honpo nearby. Chogoro Mochi Honpo is a long-established store founded in the 15th year of the Tencho era (1857), making it one of the oldest in the business. The name "Chogoro Mochi" was given by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who greatly enjoyed this mochi at a grand tea ceremony at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. It had been a while since we last had it, but it was still incredibly delicious! ✨✨✨

This mochi has a prestigious history, as it was used during the Kitano Daichakai hosted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is a refined mochi confection with sweet bean paste wrapped in thin mochi skin. You can find it in the shopping district, but this is the main store. It is also sold within the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The light mochi goes well with tea.

Visited for the first time at around 10:51 on a Saturday in June 2023. "Chogoro Mochi Honpo Honten" is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop located about a 4-5 minute walk southeast from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. I had always passed by this shop countless times since my student days, but never had the chance to visit until today. The history of this shop is ancient, and its signature product, the "Chogoro Mochi," dates back to 1587 when the founder of this shop, Chogoro, presented mochi to Toyotomi Hideyoshi at a grand tea ceremony held at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Hideyoshi was so impressed that he named the mochi "Chogoro Mochi," which has been the shop's specialty ever since. I entered the shop and confirmed if I could use the tea room, then made my purchase at the front counter. I bought two "Chogoro Mochi" and a cup of green tea for 500 yen (tax included), and then sat at the tea room located at the back of the shop. It was a private setting. After a while, my order arrived. The "Chogoro Mochi" with its smooth and chewy texture wrapped in elegant sweet red bean paste was a delightful treat. It is a well-crafted confection with a long history, and it tasted delicious. I enjoyed it leisurely at the tea room. Thank you for the meal!

During my high school trip, I had my first taste of Nagagorou Mochi at the teahouse inside Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. I was impressed by the smooth red bean paste and the softness of the mochi, as well as its beautiful appearance. Since then, every time I visit Kyoto, I make sure to have it. I didn't know that the teahouse has limited opening days (every 25th of the month and on event days at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine), so it took me quite a while to find the main store (as the internet was not widely available back then). There were times when I thought I might never be able to have it again, but the excitement I felt when I finally found the main store is unforgettable. You can also purchase it at Isetan in Kyoto Station or at Takashimaya in Shijo-Kawaramachi. I recommend getting the set with green tea (sencha or matcha) at the main store. Takashimaya: 4 pieces for 640 yen.

Near Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, along Ichijo Street, there is a traditional Japanese sweets shop called Chagoro Mochi Honpo where you can enjoy freshly made specialty Chagoro mochi. This mochi is known for its soft and stretchy texture, with a delicious sweet bean paste that perfectly complements it. The chestnut topping was also delicious, but the Chagoro mochi is definitely the best!

A while ago during my trip to Kyoto, I visited Chogoro Mochi Honpo, a shop located inside the grounds of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, where even Toyotomi Hideyoshi enjoyed their famous Chogoro Mochi. The mochi, a thin-skinned rice cake filled with sweet bean paste, has a long history dating back to the tea ceremonies held by Hideyoshi at the shrine. It is best enjoyed with matcha, but it's delicious on its own as well. It's amazing how this traditional treat has been popular for over 400 years. Whenever you visit Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, make sure to stop by this shop. Delicious!

Established for over 400 years, this traditional Japanese confectionery shop is famous for its "Chogoro Mochi," which was said to be a favorite of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The shop's website details its long history, showcasing its impressive legacy. Located about a 5-minute walk from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, I visited after paying my respects. The shop's display case was filled with neatly boxed Chogoro Mochi, perfect for gifts. Surprisingly modern in appearance, I decided to try one on the spot and requested it to be served without the box. The staff promptly retrieved a Chogoro Mochi, placed it in a paper bag, and handed it to me. I assumed they might also offer individually wrapped pieces, but it seems they prefer serving freshly made mochi as is, which adds a charming touch. Feeling a bit like Hideyoshi, I savored the treat - a soft mochi with a sweet red bean filling, offering a simple yet delicious taste. As they offer online shopping, I'll definitely order more if I crave it again. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and Chogoro Mochi left me with wonderful memories.

I bought two for 340 yen to take home. They had a shelf life of 3 days. I ate them the next day and found that the mochi skin was soft and the sweet red bean paste inside was delicious. There are many delicious Japanese sweets out there, but this one might be good for souvenirs. It's a bit too fancy for just personal snacking though.

Today, I had some business in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City. I stopped by a traditional Japanese sweets shop near Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.
**Nagaro Mochi Honpo**
This shop is popular for its "Nagaro Mochi," said to have been favored by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The store facing Ichijo Street is the main branch. You can also eat inside the shop. Alongside Nagaro Mochi, they had strawberry daifuku, warabi mochi, and beautifully packaged sweets for gifts displayed outside. You can buy Nagaro Mochi individually, or if you buy two, they come in a box with the origin story of Nagaro Mochi. I bought two Nagaro Mochi and a warabi mochi to take home.
**Nagaro Mochi**
It is said that the name "Nagaro Mochi" was given after being presented to Toyotomi Hideyoshi at a tea ceremony he hosted at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and he liked it. It is a refined mochi with sweet bean paste inside. The thin mochi skin is soft and chewy. The texture of the mochi melting in your mouth is wonderful.
**Warabi Mochi**
This is a large triangular warabi mochi, meant to be eaten on the same day as it is a fresh sweet. It is soft and bouncy, and when I cut it with a spoon and put it in my mouth, the flavor of warabi and kinako powder blend together. The bouncy and lovely texture feels nice in the mouth. It is not too sweet, making it a perfect snack.
I was able to enjoy traditional Japanese sweets originating from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. It would be a nice plan to stop by and enjoy these sweets while sightseeing at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. By the way, during the autumn foliage season, you can also eat Nagaro Mochi at the shops within the shrine grounds.

After visiting Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, I walked a few minutes south from the shrine to the main store of Kitano Shotengai. Inside the store, they had seasonal items like nightingale rice cakes and cherry blossom rice cakes, as well as modern treats like strawberry daifuku. It was reassuring to see how they continue to adapt to the times while preserving tradition. This time, I bought Chogoro Mochi and cherry blossom rice cakes. The Chogoro Mochi, with a history dating back to 1587 when it was used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi at the Kitano Grand Tea Ceremony, has a delicate flavor with sweet bean paste inside a thin rice cake. The cherry blossom rice cakes were also authentic Kyoto treats, delicious and additive-free, allowing me to enjoy an early taste of spring. They offer shipping to other regions as well. Please note that due to the prevention of the spread of the novel coronavirus, the tea ceremony at the store and the tea shop at the east gate of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine are currently suspended. (Information as of 5/26 from their website)

Travel to the Kansai region (Part 8) Saturday afternoon around 12:15. I came here, about a 5-minute walk from Toyokucha, because I want to try the mochi that Hideyoshi Toyotomi is said to have liked. I entered the shop and expressed my desire to eat here, and was led to the back of the shop where a red carpet was laid out, raising my expectations. I chose a set of two mochi and matcha. The mochi had a firm texture and chewiness, and the smooth sweetness of the red bean paste complemented the matcha well. As we talked about our plans for the afternoon in the quiet shop, they also served us roasted green tea as a palate cleanser. Since I was a little unsatisfied with lunch, the Nagaro mochi helped me feel satisfied. Thank you for the meal. (Visited in mid-April 2017.)

I purchased this mochi at Kyoto Daimaru. It was filled with plenty of sweet red bean paste. Compared to convenience store daifuku and mochi, it had a firm sweetness and satisfying texture while keeping the calories low. It is recommended for physique athletes' cheat days or carb-ups!

Inside Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, there is a dumpling shop. The dumplings are soft and fluffy, melting in your mouth. The ingredients are very simple. It was delicious.

Rescued from Corona at 4 am, I drove 430 kilometers from my home to Kyoto! I arrived a little early from Tomei, Shin-Tomei, Ise Wangan, and Shin-Meishin to Kyoto Higashi, so I decided to visit. I purchased a pack of 6 and enjoyed them at home.

I bought Nagagoro Mochi recommended by an acquaintance. The mochi is thin with plenty of red bean paste inside! The red bean paste has a strong flavor, which is delicious, but for me, it was too sweet. Recommended for those who like sweet treats.
