Before heading to Fukuoka Airport, I saw 3 o'clock croquette and couldn't resist getting some. I ordered whale croquette and plain potato croquette. Since it was sunny outside, I ate inside the restaurant. It was my first time trying whale croquette, and it had more of a whale taste than I expected!

The potato croquette was completely mashed and had a starchy texture like taro. It was lightly salted with no sweetness or distinctive flavor, making it difficult to discern what was being eaten. There was hardly any meat in it, so it was disappointing for the price of 200 yen.

The beef croquette costs 200 yen and is advertised as containing beef, but it is mostly made of potatoes. It tastes good, but the size and price don't match. I finished eating it, thinking it might be due to the location. Today, November 6th, is the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in Armed Conflicts and Wars. You can pay with PayPay.

On this day, I visited "Gold Award Croquette" on a whim.
◇Exterior and Interior
This croquette shop is located in the tourist area around JR Moji Port Station in Moji Ward, Kitakyushu City. It is located near the pier and has an exterior with "Number one in Japan" written on it, which catches the eye.
◇Seating
Takeout only.
◇Menu Structure
They offer beef croquettes, shrimp cutlets, whale cutlets, etc. I ordered the following:
- Beef Croquette (200 yen)
This item won the gold award at the National Handmade Croquette Contest. The price per piece felt a bit high considering the size, maybe it's a tourist spot price. The taste is simple and rustic, made with a mix of potatoes, beef, and onions. The ratio may vary depending on personal preference, but I prefer a type with more potatoes, so I enjoyed it more than the average croquette. It goes well with sauce, be it regular sauce or aurora sauce.
◆Strong Points
Winner of the Croquette Contest gold award.
◆Service
Average.
◆Summary
We had udon for breakfast, and my daughter had her first fishing experience. We were helped by veteran fishermen we happened to meet, had a good experience, and stopped by the pier on the way back. We bought the croquettes on a whim. Unfortunately, the nearby Moji Port Beer was closed, so we missed out on buying local beer. Thank you for the meal.

I bought croquettes at this shop on my way back from visiting Moji Port Retro. About a year ago, I remember buying and eating them during an illumination event. This time, I brought them home to reheat. They weren't freshly fried, but the crispy coating and fluffy inside were delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I enjoyed the Gold Award croquette while watching the illumination. It was a bit cold, so I ate the freshly fried hot croquette while saying "huff huff." The fluffy potatoes combined with the savory beef mince meat were delicious. It was close to closing time, but the staff kindly fried it for me. Thank you for the meal.

Have you ever been to Yufuin in Oita Prefecture? This croquette is the same one that is popular in Yufuin. Furthermore, this shop is from Yamaguchi Prefecture. I don't know why it became popular in Yufuin, but as a hybrid human from Toyoda Town and Kokura City, I had to try it. I bought a beef croquette for ¥200 and a whale mincemeat cutlet for ¥200, and ate them at a table outside the shop. It's a bit expensive, but there were about 5 groups lined up before I bought them, so it's still a popular croquette no matter where you go. I wonder how much whale meat is being distributed now... I remember having whale stew in school lunches, but it was served with bread, not rice...

When I visited the Moji Port Retro Area, I stumbled upon a takeout specialty shop. I was curious about the croquette that won the gold award at the National Croquette Contest, so I bought one. There was no information at the store, so I found this excerpt on the official website: "We won the prestigious gold award at the National Handmade Croquette Contest at the National Meat Industry Exhibition, using domestically produced beef, potatoes, and onions as the main ingredients, and sticking to the ingredients and taste." It seems they also sell them in various places in Western Japan, tourist destinations, and service areas. At 200 yen, I was disappointed by the small size. The croquette had a thin, crispy coating and a creamy filling. The domestically produced beef was minced and had a sparse texture. One bite was probably enough to satisfy me...

Blog ⇒ [Riding on the Flowing Clouds♪] Late November 2022... Planned to drive around the San'in region, ended up landing in Kyushu! Also visited Hiroshima and Okayama... In the end, took 6 days to travel through 5 prefectures! So much sea... (I mean, a lot of sea) haha Well, there were also mountains and valleys... (Quite eventful) haha But overall, it was a fun road trip! On the 5th day, we left Ube City and headed towards Kyushu! Kyushu may seem far, but the Kanmon Straits are right there! Actually, it had been 36 years since I last crossed the Kanmon Straits by car. I used to come here right after getting my driver's license... After that, I always flew to Kyushu! Well, it was because I started from Tokyo, but coming back to Kansai after a long time made me feel nostalgic. Road trips are adventurous and great because you can drive wherever and whenever you want! This impromptu landing in Kyushu was a prime example. I suddenly felt like exploring Moji the day before, so I parked my car in front of Moji Station and took a train to Moji Port Station! Moji Port Station is a designated important cultural property, so I had to see the retro station building from inside the ticket gate! Moji Port Station and Tokyo Station are the only stations with designated important cultural properties! So, I spent half a day strolling through the retro streets. Enjoyed lunch and tea, truly had a blast! During the stroll, I couldn't resist trying the "Gold Medal Croquette"! I bought the "Hand-ground Beef Curry Bread" for 300 yen. Gold Medal Croquette shops are everywhere, but are they a chain? It doesn't really seem like it. It just means there are many croquette competitions around. Anyway, the curry bread here is really delicious! They start frying after you order, so you have to wait around 10 minutes... But on the flip side, it means you can always have freshly fried bread. The curry with the depth of flavor and the umami of the beef make it the best curry bread! Service: ♪♪♪♪♪♪ Food: ♪♪♪♪♪♪♪ Value: ♪♪♪♪♪♪♪ ※Rating based on 10 stars!

Higashiminatocho, Moji Ward, Kitakyushu City. A takeout-only croquette shop located in one corner of Kaimon Market. The best croquette in Japan made by Yamaguchi's Akira-chan Croquette Co., known as the Gold Award Croquette. It is also sold in tourist spots like Dazaifu and Oita's Oji PA. The menu includes beef croquette, whale croquette, whale cutlet, and fried dumplings. You can get a 50 yen discount when ordering with draft beer, chuhai, highball, or non-alcoholic cocktails. This time, I purchased the beef croquette (200 yen). The beef croquette, an award-winning masterpiece at the National Handmade Croquette Contest, is in the shape of an oval coin. The crispy coating encases smooth mashed potatoes, with a distinct taste of beef. It is truly delicious. On this day, Moji Port was quite lively after the lifting of the shortened business hours. I hope things return to normal soon. Thank you for the meal.

Croquette 200 yen. I ordered the whale croquette. It took longer than expected, maybe because the whale croquette wasn't ready. The croquette was delicious with creamy potatoes. It was nice to have it freshly fried. Thank you for the meal.

When taking a stroll around Moji Port, you can't miss the sign boasting about the best gold award-winning croquettes in Japan. Plus, it proudly displays the words "National Croquette Contest Gold Award Winner." The taste is delicious, but I know of even tastier croquettes, so in my opinion, this place is second best in Japan.
