This is a souvenir shop located in the domestic terminal of Fukuoka Airport. It features two booths from the long-established soy sauce maker Kyuhara Honke, offering their mentaiko brand "Shobouan" and their dashi brand "Chinoseya". The shop was recently renovated and looked shiny, so I decided to take a look inside. They had delicious looking mentaiko and soy sauce, but it seemed difficult to bring them back home, so I hesitated. At Chinoseya, they had a variety of dashi packs with high-quality dashi that were reasonably priced, so I bought some for home use. It's great to be able to make dashi at home, and it's especially nice that they are lightweight. I also bought some small packs as souvenirs. I tried making frozen Sanuki udon with it right away, and it turned out to be a perfect Hakata udon. This is convenient, I will definitely buy it again.

I heard about a popular shop called Shofuan in Nakasu, and decided to try their mentaiko. Shofuan is a company based in Fukuoka that gained popularity first in Kyoto before becoming a hit in Fukuoka. They have been selling mentaiko since 1990. They offer two types of mentaiko: "karakuchi" (spicy) and "umakuchi" (mild). The umakuchi mentaiko is more popular, so I purchased their Ikamentaiko from the Kobako series. The mentaiko comes frozen with a shelf life of about 2 weeks. The Kobako series comes in a convenient 38g size, perfect for single households. The umakuchi mentaiko was sweet and had a strong umami flavor compared to other mentaiko brands. It would be suitable even for children. I plan to try the karakuchi next. The shop I visited will be closing on April 2nd, but a new shop is set to open in the North Gate area of the airport or in the Central Lobby on the 2nd floor.

The departure floor of the airport has a variety of samples available for tasting, making it easy to try before buying. This time, I tried the spicy and mild flavors and ended up purchasing them. I bought the sliced pieces for home use, which were delicious. The spicy flavor was strong, perfect for pairing with alcohol. I also bought the Matsunae-style products, which had a nice texture with the popping of the roe and the flavor of mentaiko. It made for a delicious souvenir.

During my visit in October 2019, I tried the Agodashi Mentaiko (Umakuchi) for 2,160 yen at Fukuoka Airport, coming from Kurume. Before heading back to Tokyo, we decided to buy some souvenirs. First stop was this place that my companion had in mind. The lady in charge of the tasting section kept dividing the mentaiko into small portions on a plate for us to try, both the spicy and the savory ones. They were both delicious, but we ended up choosing the savory one based on my companion's recommendation. The umakuchi flavor was really elegant and powerful, with a distinct taste of agodashi. It was my first time trying mentaiko from Shobouan, and it was delicious!

After completing a tour around Kyushu, I arrived at Fukuoka Airport to begin my journey back home. The terminal building has been renovated and now looks beautiful and convenient. There are new shops added, making the time at the airport more enjoyable. One of the new shops is "Shobouan" which offers a wide variety of popular souvenirs from Hakata, including spicy cod roe, Hakata motsunabe (tripe hot pot), and snacks for sake. I purchased a jar of Yuzu Koji pickled squid (864 yen) as a souvenir after tasting it. It is a dish made by marinating thick and chewy squid in a sauce made from sake brewery rice koji. The refreshing yuzu flavor spreads nicely, making it perfect as a side dish for rice.

Among the many famous mentaiko (spicy cod roe) shops in Hakata, the one that caught my attention is a new shop with a pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff! What particularly drew me in was their mentaiko products made with agodashi (jaw broth). Almost all products are available for sampling, and after trying them, I ended up purchasing a mini portion of the agodashi mentaiko. They offer four types of mentaiko: konbu-zuke mentaiko, umakuchi, yuzumentaiko, and ikakonbu mentaiko, as well as bottled products like ikau ni and ikayuzu koji-zuke. The richness of the agodashi brings out so much flavor that it made me feel unsatisfied with the mentaiko I had eaten before. Furthermore, the ikau ni and ikayuzu koji-zuke are versatile products that can be used not only as condiments for rice or sake, but also for pasta. The most delightful taste I encountered in Hakata this time was the mentaiko and bottled products from this shop. I'm glad I got to discover these new flavors!

This time, I visited to buy souvenirs for my wife and children when I went to Fukuoka. The place is the 2nd floor of Fukuoka Airport Domestic Terminal, at Shofuan Fukuoka Airport store, a long-established mentaiko (spicy cod roe) shop founded in Meiji 26. What I received on this day was a limited edition item only available at this store, called Agodashi Mentaiko no Umakuchi. It is a dish made by marinating high-quality mentaiko in grilled flying fish broth. The mentaiko not only has spiciness but also brings out a rich umami flavor. It was very delicious. Thank you for the meal.

On my way back from visiting Fukuoka, I stopped by Fukuoka Airport. I decided to buy some spicy cod roe (mentaiko) to take home, so I explored the airport. I found three shops lined up next to each other, so I decided to try the mentaiko from each shop and compare them. Here is my review:
"Agedashi Mentaiko (Spicy) - 380 yen - ☆4.0
There was a tasting corner inside the shop, so I tried a sample. I found that I really liked the spicy flavor, so I decided to purchase it. They offer small sizes as well, which is convenient. The taste is definitely authentic. Mentaiko from the original region is truly delicious!"

When it comes to Kyuhara, I always look forward to enjoying a delicious soup at Fukuoka Airport before departure. I have bought their soup stock before, but this time I got a rare new type of noodles. After leaving it untouched for a while, I decided it was the perfect time to satisfy my hunger. I put the noodles and freeze-dried ingredients in a bowl, poured hot water over it, covered it with plastic wrap, waited for 3 minutes, added the soup, and enjoyed it. It was almost like cup noodles, but the somen noodles had the perfect chewy texture. The yuzu aroma was irresistible, and it was incredibly delicious! The chicken broth, the crispy texture of the green onions, all delicious!

The other day, I received some delicious Chionosha dashi, so I bought it at Fukuoka Airport. It's powder made from fish broth, and it tastes great even when you drink it like tea. It comes in a set of 5 packs. The aroma is wonderful, and I think it would be delicious as a broth for udon noodles.

When asked what would be a good souvenir from Fukuoka, I answered mentaiko. My daughter recommended a place called Shofuan. I wasn't familiar with it, so I said anything would be fine. As a result, I got mentaiko from Kyuhara Honke. They use dashi in their product, but I didn't know about this type of mentaiko. It's a spicy version of mentaiko made with dashi. Enjoy it slowly.

Delicious!! The flavor of the dashi was truly amazing. It was packed with the essence of Japanese flavors. The natural sweetness and rich umami flavor layered multiple times, creating a strong and flavorful dashi. While bonito dashi and konbu dashi are commonly used as the base for Japanese dashi, the Hakata limited edition Chiyonosha Ago Dashi pack uses two types of dried fish – grilled ago and dried ago – in a luxurious combination. The ingredients such as grilled ago, bonito flakes, sardines, iwashi sardines, konbu kelp, dried shiitake mushrooms, dried anchovies, soy sauce, salt, and fermented seasoning are perfectly balanced to create a delicious flavor. The Chiyonosha Ago Dashi from Kyuhara Honke Chiyonosha, established in the Meiji era, has a rich history and the taste reflects that. The abundance of flavors from the sea packed into this dashi was truly exceptional. I initially thought Kyuhara was pronounced as Hisahara, but upon reading the pamphlet, I realized it is pronounced as Kyuhara. I used this dashi to make a whole onion and tomato stew in the style of oden. My child, who usually doesn't react much to food, was impressed by the delicious dashi. The difference in quality compared to the usual dashi from the supermarket was evident. I would love to use this dashi again in dishes like udon, miso soup, and simmered dishes. I am grateful for the opportunity to try it, and thank you for the meal♪

I received this Agodashi mentaiko furikake as a souvenir from Fukuoka. It is a cod roe furikake, with a slightly spicy sensation and a strong flavor of Agodashi. I had purchased mentaiko from Fukuoka before, and it had a unique taste with the mellowing effect of Agodashi, and this furikake captures that flavor perfectly. The mentaiko from Shobuan may be a hit or miss for some people, but for those who like it, I highly recommend this.
