It's New Year's Day, and I think I walked last year, but this year I will also start walking on New Year's Day. Papa said his goal is 30,000 steps, so I will also aim for 30,000 steps. Unlike Sapporo, there are no open stores in Abashiri on New Year's Day, so I will just walk. I will first head to Tentozan, taking a slightly longer route. So far, I have walked 4,700 steps, mostly uphill, so I am sweating. Here they are open on New Year's Day, so I will have some soft serve ice cream. There is only drift ice soft serve, though. The first soft serve of the year is from Tentozan's drift ice hall cafe de clione. I press the button and a cheerful lady appears. The drift ice soft serve costs 350 yen, so it's expensive. It's salty and I'm not a big fan, but I have to eat it. It's smooth and small for the price, but it's salty. It also has caramel, which makes it easy to eat, but I still can't get used to it. Now, I will continue walking. I pass by the Prison Museum and head to Abashiri Prison. I will cross a bridge called "Kagami Bridge," where prisoners vow to never return when they see their reflection on the water. I've never been inside. From there, I head to the Michi-no-Eki (Road Station). I was thinking of having another soft serve, but unfortunately, it's closed. Only the restrooms are open. The Queen says, "I just woke up," at 19,000 steps. I've walked 19,000 steps, so Papa must have walked over 25,000 steps, right? The Queen Ottavia Piccolo is truly amazing. I thought about heading straight back from there since my legs couldn't take it anymore. But today, I won't give up and aim for 30,000 steps. I head towards the road along the sea. The rural sidewalks are rough and hard to walk on. Despite the cold, there was a surfer. One was heading towards the shore, and two were walking side by side, blocking the sidewalk. One said, "Oops," and moved aside, but the other tilted the board and didn't clear the sidewalk. I was so tired, but in a calm voice, I said, "Excuse me," even though I felt like clicking my tongue. I felt like they were going to drop me in the sea. So I walked briskly and just kept moving forward. I ended up surpassing 31,000 steps. I truly recognize the greatness of the old man from Teine.
