Cheap side dishes. Nakasu "Niku no Benkyouya" along the main street in Nakasu... I wonder how many years they have been around... The old "Niku no Benkyouya" shop. The owner sells meat on the corner, and the mother sells side dishes on the right hand side. Their croquettes are famous... but I'm not a big fan, so I opted for the side dish pack. Lots of chicken cutlets, as well as leek and oden... all mixed together. And all this for 350 yen, it's amazing, right? I visited the restaurant after seeing it featured on TV. I asked if they had croquettes in the meat section, and was directed to a small counter next to it. I asked for 5 croquettes and was told to wait a few minutes while they fried them up. I received the croquettes after a short wait and paid 450 yen for 5, which is 90 yen each. I tried one right away and it was hot, fluffy, and had a gentle curry flavor. The filling was moist and contained chunky potatoes, bacon, minced meat, and onions. It was clearly homemade and tasted great even without sauce. The location is a bit inconvenient and they sell out by 7 pm, so it's best to visit early. I reheated the croquettes in the oven the next day and they were still delicious. Just a heads up, there is no parking at the store and the nearby coin parking is expensive. It's best to use public transportation and walk there. The counter for deli and meat are separate, and croquettes are only sold from 4 pm onwards.
