On the first day of March, I embarked on a 4-day trip to enjoy B-class gourmet food such as ramen in the 4 northern Kyushu prefectures (Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto). Due to the impact of a powerful low-pressure system, my flight to Kumamoto Airport was delayed by 2 hours. I rented a car and headed north on the Kyushu Expressway, where I tried "Kurume Ramen" and "Nagahama Ramen" before finally arriving at my accommodation for the night, the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka, at 4:30 pm. This hotel is located right in front of the Nakagawa River, with the bustling Nakasu district and Kyushu's largest commercial facility, Canal City Hakata, right in front of it. After settling into my room, I went for a stroll near the hotel and then wandered around Canal City Hakata, a huge complex where I almost got lost. I asked for directions at the comprehensive information desk on the 1st floor and ended up at "The Hakata Gift Shop" on the basement floor of Canal City, where I bought some local souvenirs including "Hakata-style Mentaiko", "Spicy Mentaiko", and "Iron Pot Gyoza". These frozen food items were later sent to Osaka via cool delivery service as gifts for friends. When it comes to Hakata souvenirs, nothing beats "Spicy Mentaiko", which is made by marinating cod roe in chili peppers and other spices. I used the "Spicy Mentaiko" to make "Mentaiko Pasta" and "Mentaiko Tamagoyaki". The Mentaiko Pasta was made by infusing olive oil in a frying pan with chili peppers and garlic, then adding butter, milk, and the mashed Spicy Mentaiko. After mixing in al dente pasta, I garnished it with shredded nori, finely chopped shiso leaves, and more Spicy Mentaiko. As for the Mentaiko Tamagoyaki, I mixed rehydrated wood ear mushrooms, chopped green onions, mayonnaise, and dashi with beaten eggs before cooking it in a frying pan and rolling sliced Spicy Mentaiko in the middle. Lastly, I tried making the famous "Iron Pot Gyoza", which actually originated in the Yahata district of Kitakyushu City as "Yahata Gyoza". These small, misshapen gyoza were delicious when pan-fried and served with the accompanying chili pepper sauce. After shopping, I took a short nap in my room before heading out to the bustling streets for dinner at izakayas and food stalls. Enjoyed a wonderful meal!
