旅浪漫
I arrived at the remote island of Teshima on a spring trip to Hokkaido in 2018. Due to rough weather, the high-speed boat departing from Haporo Port at 8:00, the ferry departing at 8:30, and the high-speed boat departing at 11:40 were all canceled, leaving only the 2:00 ferry to Teshima and Yakushima. I had to cancel my reservation at the Yamasaki Inn and call them again to arrange accommodation. The ferry Orolon 2 departed Haporo Port at exactly 2:00, and as soon as we reached the open sea, the small 489-ton boat began to sway violently from side to side. After enduring the 1.5-hour journey to Teshima Island lying on my stomach in the second-class cabin, I finally set foot on the island after 25 years. The large monument of the Orolon bird at the port had been removed in September 2016. The innkeeper picked me up from the ferry terminal in a microbus. The two-story inn is located right by the sea. The room I was shown to was a Japanese-style room on the second floor, with a heater for this season. The dinner menu was filled with seafood delicacies such as sweet shrimp, spear squid, and soy sashimi, red flounder simmered, vinegar-soaked raw fish, seaweed and octopus salad, tempura of udo and garlic, tsubugai, octopus head, vinegar miso sauce with green onions, soup with tofu and soy scraps, oranges, rice, etc. The meal was self-served, and alcohol could be bought from the inn's vending machine or brought in. I enjoyed a variety of locally caught fish and a relaxing meal. After dinner, the other guests left one by one, leaving me alone. I hurried back to my room after eating and fell asleep watching a TV music show. The mornings in Hokkaido are early, with the sky starting to brighten before 4:00 am even in this season. Breakfast was served at 6:30 am, with dishes like herring roe, fresh spear squid with mountain wasabi, marinated shirasu and mizuna with mayonnaise, fried egg, seaweed stem tsukudani, butterbur scape simmered, seasoned seaweed, and miso soup with ear of Buddha (ginnanso). The accommodation fee for one night with two meals was 8000 yen, with an additional 500 yen for heating. After breakfast, I plan to walk to Kurosaki Beach before heading to the ferry terminal for Yakushima Island. Thank you for the delicious meal.
