"I thought it was more stylish than I had imagined." That's what I thought when I visited this confectionery shop. Located in Izumi City, Osaka, this shop called "Mukashin" has around 20 stores mainly in the southern and northern parts of Osaka. While they mainly sell traditional Japanese sweets, they also offer some Western-style sweets like sablé and Baumkuchen. According to a friend who recommended this place to me, their signature product, the "Original Osaka Mitarashi Dango" filled with sauce, is quite popular. On the other hand, traditional stick-shaped sweets like yokan used to only come in large sizes, so they weren't purchased often. However, since around November last year, they started selling a product called "Master's Small Box," which is about one-sixth to one-eighth the size of the traditional ones. This smaller size and beautifully cut "moe-dan" sections have been well-received, becoming a popular item now. My friend often receives them as gifts. The reason I visited this time was because I heard that a Valentine's Day version of the "Master's Small Box" had been released. I purchased the "Master's Small Box Chocolat" this time. It is a set where you can enjoy a rich chocolate-flavored yokan and a steamed cake called "Ukishima" with cocoa. The appearance was more elaborate than I had expected, with cute red and pink heart-shaped yokan floating on top. As for the taste, I personally think it would be well-received even by young people who are not familiar with Japanese sweets. In addition to the Valentine's limited edition "Master's Small Box," there were also several other sweets and eat-in desserts that caught my eye, so I tried them as well. Sablé: They had four flavors - Roasted Butter, Coconut Butter, Chocolate Butter, and Izumisou Onion. All of them tasted good, but my personal recommendation is the savory sablé made with locally grown Izumisou onions, especially as a souvenir or gift for those far away. Strawberry Ukon: This is a spring limited edition of the shop's staple confection called "Ukon," which is a baked confection. While the regular one is filled with egg yolk paste, this one is filled with strawberry-flavored paste. It doesn't just have added flavorings or colorings, but real strawberries are used, giving it a truly strawberry-like taste. Roasted Butter Soft: An eat-in dessert where soft serve ice cream is placed on top of the shop's staple confection "Roasted Butter Cake." The unique baked confection, not a financier or madeleine, pairs well with the saltiness of the sablé topping and soft serve ice cream. It's simple yet quite good. The prices are also reasonable, making it a good place for everyday use in my opinion. If you have the chance, please stop by and try it out.
