This spicy cod roe uses domestically sourced cod roe as its selling point. I chose the larger size, around 120g, as advised for a chewy texture. I also purchased mayonnaise made with domestic cod roe, including mentaiko mayonnaise and yuzu mentaiko mayonnaise. The original cod roe was praised as delicious.

I bought mentaiko (spicy cod roe) as a souvenir in Hakata. Although it may be a common choice in Hakata, I always purchase from "Shimamoto" shop. I usually order the original cut mentaiko 300g, BIG squid mentaiko 400g, plenty of kazunoko (herring roe) mentaiko 350g, and mentaiko mayonnaise from their online shop. However, this time I purchased the recently popular "nama tarako" (fresh cod roe) limited edition only available at Hankyu. Shimamoto's mentaiko has just the right spiciness and tastes even better when grilled, but this time it was nama tarako, so I enjoyed it as it is. The roe stands out and is recommended to eat over rice. Also, my stock of mentaiko mayonnaise was running low, so I bought some more. This mentaiko mayonnaise tastes delicious with anything, but it is especially handy when making mentaiko pasta. Please try it out at least once.
