Recently, there seems to be a boom in fried chicken, with more and more specialty fried chicken shops opening up in the local Minamikawachi area. Especially, a shop specializing in fried chicken originating from Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, called "Nakatsu Karaage," appears to be gaining popularity. In February 17, 2018, a new fried chicken specialty shop called "Torisho Tomitani Nishiiwamoto Store" opened in Itamochi, Tondabayashi. This shop is located in a building that used to house a convenience store called "Daily Yamazaki" and had been vacant for a while. Last year, a beauty salon called "m" opened on the right side, and in February of this year, "Torisho" opened on the left side (the middle section was still vacant at that time). Upon researching, it was discovered that "Torisho" is a chain store with its headquarters located in Osaka City, Miyakojima Ward, and has around 100 stores nationwide as of February 2018. The specialty of Torisho is that they use 100% domestic young chicken and their secret sauce is made with a base of carefully selected soy sauce, ginger, and garlic from Nakatsu, flavored with vegetables, fruit juice, organic herbs, and various spices, and aged for a long time. They have won the highest gold award in the Chicken Nanban category at the 8th (2017) Karaage Grand Prix. The menu includes classic items such as "Mune" and "Momo," as well as "Tebasaki" and "Chicken Nanban," among others. They also offer bento boxes, with free extra rice available. The fried chicken from Torisho is marinated in a secret sauce made at a sauce workshop in Nakatsu City, and the juicy chicken meat with a well-balanced seasoning was delicious. The chicken is fried upon ordering, so it is served hot. Unfortunately, the "Mune" was sold out when I visited, so I ended up ordering the "Nakatsu Karaage Combo" with only "Momo." Next time, I definitely want to try the Chicken Nanban... (I purchased the "Mune" later on). The official website for Torisho can be found at https://nis-torisho.com/. Access: Located on the southeast corner of the "Itamochi Minami" intersection where National Route 309 intersects with Prefectural Route 201, in the same location where Daily Yamazaki Tondabayashi Itamochi store used to be. The parking lot from the convenience store days can still be used. By bus, take the Kongo Bus from Tondabayashi Station on the Kintetsu Nagano Line. Get off at the "Itamochi" bus stop and walk about 300m south (towards National Route 309).
