On this day, I was in the mood for some seriously good fried chicken! I heard that there was an incredible fried chicken set meal at a popular izakaya in Shibuya, so I decided to visit. The place is called Daisu Stand Kandaya, a reasonably priced izakaya where you can also order by the plate. I have used their Nakano and Kanda Honten branches for my sake training. When I entered the underground restaurant, I found it quite spacious, and despite the name "stand," there were plenty of seats available. I quickly ordered their lunch menu, the "Tori Karaage Teishoku LIMITED" (790 yen including tax). This limited set meal comes with 10 pieces of karaage for 690 yen including tax, and you can upgrade to 21-30 pieces for 790 yen including tax. I had heard that each piece was on the smaller side, so I thought it would be okay and ordered the maximum of 30 pieces. When the waitress heard my order, she paused for a moment and then asked if she should bring them all at once. I said yes, despite the warning that there would be an additional charge if I left any leftovers. The karaage arrived in about 5 minutes, and they were smaller than I had expected, with a rugged appearance. The freshly fried karaage was delicious, with a strong garlic flavor! In addition to the sauce, there were condiments, and I managed to eat up to about 20 pieces with rice and soup. However, around this point, my chopsticks suddenly stopped moving. The weight of the fried food and the sheer quantity of 30 pieces started to take its toll, and I began to feel full. The impact of the fried food was overwhelming. For a moment, I thought I might have to pay extra for leftovers, but then I spotted some mayo on the table, which I rarely use. When I tried it with the karaage, it was a game-changer! I switched up the flavors and successfully finished the meal by getting a half portion of rice and soup as a refill. Normally, I'm not a fan of putting mayo on my karaage (I'm not a fan of mayo in general), but it really saved me this time. Overall, the experience was heavier than expected, not just in terms of volume. Next time, I'll go for 20 pieces to enjoy it more comfortably (?). Thank you for the meal!
