My wife and I visited after discovering it by chance on our way back from a riverside dining experience. The restaurant's building and the town's atmosphere were charming. The texture of the warabi mochi was exceptionally fluffy and delicious compared to any I've had before.

I bought a grilled bird-shaped cake. The skin was chewy and the sweet red bean paste inside was delicately sweet and very delicious. It was so delicious that I finished both that I bought. I'm glad I bought two. The size is small, so if you only have one, you might want to eat more.

A shop located in the middle of Pontocho. It completely blends into the scenery of Pontocho. Even foreigners are taking lots of photos, so the charm must be getting across. When you enter the shop, the owner may seem intimidating at first (sorry⁉️), but he is actually very kind when you talk to him. He gives off a craftsman vibe. The shop is small and has a limited selection, so I bought a little bit of everything. I was able to fully enjoy dessert time after dinner. It's a must-try famous shop that you should visit at least once.

Located a 5-7 minute walk from Sanjo Station is the traditional Japanese confectionery shop Suntomachi Surugaya. Boasting over 100 years of history, this longstanding Japanese confectionery shop is a bit hard to find on the corner of Suntomachi, yet it seems to always have a steady stream of customers. They open at 10 a.m., so it's convenient to stop by casually before lunch. This time, I purchased their popular bite-sized Warabi, a recommended Japanese confectionery displayed at the storefront among various others. Filled generously with sweet bean paste, the Warabi mochi had a delightful balance of chewy texture and smooth sweetness of the bean paste. Even if you're not a fan of regular Warabi mochi, you can enjoy this one that's more like a fresh confectionery. Be sure to visit! Thank you for the delicious treat!

I couldn't buy the warabi mochi from the nearby Honke Tsukimachiya Naomasa, so I came to this shop instead. They offer warabi mochi made with warabi flour, giving it a soft and sticky texture. Inside, there is a smooth and lightly sweetened red bean paste. Each piece is bite-sized and costs 1,568 yen for a pack of six.

On my way back from the quiet Pontocho street, I chose this shop and bought 6 pieces of warabimochi and 2 pieces of Pontocho monaka. The warabimochi had a soft and elegant taste with smooth sweet bean paste inside, and the monaka had a similarly refined taste. They filled the bean paste after I placed the order.

SOUL SURVIVOR

From Kyoto Station, I took the subway Karasuma Line via Porta and headed towards Sanjo from Karasuma Oike Station. I strolled to Honnoji Temple, watched egrets on the Kamogawa River, and then sneaked into the longed-for Pontocho. It was still early, so there were few people around, but I passed by a maiko and wandered around until I stumbled upon Surugaya. The shop had a cute logo of a plover and an atmosphere of a long-established store. Known for their soft yokan, they also had seasonal sweets made with chestnuts. Among them, I bought a bite-sized warabimochi for 1,568 yen. I paid with a credit card to the elegant owner. I brought the warabimochi home as a tea snack. It came with plenty of kinako. When I tried to skewer it with a toothpick, it was quite sticky and difficult to pierce. It was totally different from the warabimochi I occasionally eat. It was filled with lots of smooth sweet bean paste and melted in my mouth in an instant. The sweetness was refined and delicious. I thought once again that Kyoto's traditional Japanese sweets are amazing. Thank you for the meal.

While sightseeing in Kyoto, I wanted to buy some warabi mochi and eat it at my hotel. I asked the MK Taxi driver to recommend a few places, and ended up going to Surugaya. They sell traditional warabi mochi with sweet red bean paste filling. Since it doesn't keep well, I had to buy it to go and eat it the same day. The bite-sized pieces were just right, with the red bean paste not too sweet, and it was delicious. I definitely want to go back and buy more next time I'm in Kyoto. Thank you for the meal.

I visited the popular Chinese restaurant "Nishibuchi Hanten" in Kyoto in August 2020 and this is the review of a product I got from a traditional Kyoto confectionery shop called "Pontocho Surugaya," which has been preserving its tradition for over a hundred years in the flower district of Pontocho. The product is "Yokan Tea" priced at 900 yen (including tax). It is a sweet Yokan made with red bean paste solidified with agar and mixed with matcha, giving it a subtle green color and a shiny appearance. It has a refined taste with the added flavor of matcha, making it perfect to enjoy with bitter hot tea or coffee after dinner. Let me share some information about Yokan. The type commonly known as Yokan is "Neri Yokan," which has a firm texture due to a high amount of agar, while the softer type with less agar is called "Mizu Yokan." Additionally, there is "Mushi Yokan," which is steamed and solidified using wheat flour or kudzu starch. The early Yokan in Japan was "Mushi Yokan," and its variations include "Imo Yokan" and "Gyuhire." Neri Yokan has a high sugar content, making it highly preservable, allowing it to be stored for over a year at room temperature and even used as emergency food. Enjoy your meal!

August 2020. I went on a sightseeing trip to Kyoto after a long time. After exploring the Imadegawa area and Okazaki area, I returned to Gion Shijo. Since I still had plenty of time until dinner, I took a walk around Gion Shijo. While walking through the almost deserted Pontocho, I stumbled upon the traditional Japanese confectionery shop "Pontocho Surugaya" and decided to take a look. Although bite-sized Warabi mochi and Take-doro (water yokan in bamboo) are popular, this time I was interested in Mame Suham. I purchased this item which contains 14 pieces for 680 yen. Mame Suham is a simple confection made from carefully selected soybean powder, sugar, and malt syrup. I enjoyed it at home - the Mame Suham had a pale yellow and uguisu (a type of green) color. I could taste the savory aroma of soybeans, and it was delicious. The convenient size was good, and I really liked it. Next time, I plan to buy the bite-sized Warabi as well. Thank you for the meal!

This restaurant is located in Ponto-cho, where snow falls on the high peaks of Mt. Fuji and in Kyoto. In the past, Ponto-cho was a place I couldn't easily visit, but now as an adult, I can stroll there and appreciate its charm. It's a place where you realize the turnover of establishments is quite rapid. In Kyoto, there are three confectionery shops under the name "Surugaya," with the one in Fushimi being the largest and most famous. However, the Surugaya in Ponto-cho and the one in Nijo are said to be branches of the same family. While my mother favors the matsutake from the Nijo Surugaya, I personally love the "Take-dew" water yokan available during this season. This place is famous for its bite-sized warabi. Due to visiting without a reservation, it took a bit of time to receive an appropriate number of Take-dew yokan. One small mistake was made regarding the purchase method, requiring explanation and adjustment when distributing the pierced holes. Nonetheless, being able to enjoy this here is truly appreciated. In Kyoto, there are several shops that serve yokan in bamboo, but the flavor of bamboo truly enhances the yokan, making plastic containers inadequate. The aroma of young bamboo is pleasant here, and piercing the holes is also very easy. I enjoyed a taste of Kyoto's summer traditions. Thank you for the feast.

I had been thinking of going there for a while but hadn't gone (forgot (-- )). A person I am grateful to for work (who loves sweet bean paste) is retiring, so I rushed to buy some, also for home use (^^) A bite of warabi... It doesn't look like "warabi mochi" at first glance. It's a size that seems like you could eat it in one bite. Inside is strained sweet bean paste, outside is soybean flour. I thought, "Warabi mochi with bean paste inside?" but it's surprisingly delicious! Although warabi mochi doesn't look like that at first glance, it's incredibly soft, and it goes really well with the strained sweet bean paste inside and the soybean flour outside! Butter dorayaki... Even though I only bought one, they put it in a paper bag just for that (sorry (^^;)) The buttery flavor comes later than when you eat it. It's buttery but not at all heavy, and instead it feels refreshing. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever bought warabi mochi for myself before~ I don't usually go out to buy sweet things for myself, but maybe I'll go back here to buy some again (^^) I want to bring some to my parents' house too!

A traditional Japanese confectionery shop on a street lined with restaurants in Pontocho. I bought warabi mochi. It's not the kind with kinako powder sprinkled on top and packed in slices, but a round warabi mochi filled with smooth red bean paste and dusted with kinako powder. It's incredibly delicious! Highly recommended.

The restaurant sells warabi mochi learned from the previous generation at Kisen-do in Yamashina. Among the prevalent fake warabi mochi disguised with kinako, they use genuine warabi flour. In summer, there is mizu yokan in a bamboo tube, and the hanazuki and chidori available throughout the year are delicious. The trademark of this shop, "chidori," is a lovely design that blends well with the atmosphere of old Kyoto's Pontocho district from a decade ago. Nowadays, walking in Pontocho, one might wonder which country this place belongs to. Furthermore, most of the quaint old shops have disappeared and transformed into establishments catering to foreigners. Perhaps it's the way of the times.

I finally got to visit the Japanese sweets shop that I've been curious about for a while. I had some free time, so I went at last!! There were so many tempting options like yokan, dorayaki, and manju, but I was specifically looking for the bite-sized warabi mochi. Today, I bought 6 pieces of warabi mochi for 1456 yen and a piece of yokan (matcha) for 840 yen! As soon as I got home and tried them... the warabi mochi was incredibly delicious!!! It was so soft and not too sweet, with a hint of kinako powder. I thought it was a bit pricey, but the taste was totally worth it! I think it would make an elegant and appreciated gift, so I will definitely be coming back for more!

I'm in Kyoto. Hmm, let's buy some Japanese sweets to take home. So, I stopped by Surugaya. I got some "warabi mochi." I wanted to relax and eat it at home. When I opened the box, the delicious "warabi mochi" looked so good. When I tried it, the chewy texture and flavor were amazing. The kinako really enhanced the taste. I enjoyed it with matcha. I have to stop by and buy some more when I visit Kyoto again. Japanese sweets are really good, aren't they?

I went to a restaurant recommended by a friend and was planning to buy the delicious Kin'kaku that they were selling, but I found out that I could also eat it inside the restaurant, so I decided to have it there. They even served me tea. I love Kin'kaku and have tried various kinds, but this one might be the best I've ever had. The sugar coating was crispy, and the sweet bean paste inside was not too sweet, giving it a refreshing taste. I could eat it endlessly. I regret only buying a pack of six at that time. Next time, I want to buy around twenty and take them home. Apart from Kin'kaku, there were many other delicious Japanese sweets available.

I bought the warabi mochi with chestnuts and wasanbon on that day and ate it right away by the Kamogawa River. It was so soft and bouncy, although I think the wind blew away a lot of the kinako powder. I would love to try freshly made warabi mochi that you can drink.

In search of an unforgettable taste my husband had during his college days, we wandered around Pontocho in the unseasonable heat. Finally found it, but it was closed for the day. Visited again the next day. Bought some bamboo yokan and warabi mochi. Surprisingly delicious! It was a whole new world compared to the bamboo yokan I had before. The refreshing sweetness of the water yokan flowing inside the bamboo, you can tell it's carefully made with selected ingredients. I understand why my husband is so particular. It was a wonderful taste that cannot be achieved through mass production.
