Shabuha JR Kokura Station, a glass-walled brand new building located just a 1-minute walk from the south exit. A casual shabu-shabu restaurant affiliated with the Skylark group, with branches nationwide. They serve lunch from 11 am to 4 pm (60-minute limit on weekends and holidays) and dinner from 4 pm to 12 am (100-minute limit every day), with no regular holidays. The restaurant opened in October last year, so the place is clean and well-maintained.
I visited the restaurant for dinner on a Saturday at 6:30 pm with a friend after work. The place was very crowded, with customers waiting for seats. Luckily, I made a reservation through Hot Pepper, so we had our seats secured. We were seated by the window in a booth-like area, but there were also seats that felt more like private rooms.
Upon entering, there was a corner with vegetables, rice, condiments, sauces, desserts, and drinks. The menu showed that lunch prices range from 1,199 to 2,699 yen (excluding tax), and dinner prices range from 1,599 to 3,099 yen. The prices vary depending on the combination of pork, beef, or sushi (dinner only). During dinner time, there is also an all-you-can-eat option for tsukune (meatballs). They have pricing for elementary school students as well.
The hot pot ingredients include various vegetables, tofu, noodles, and gyoza wrappers. They also offer a variety of rice dishes, sauces, and condiments. For dessert, they have soft serve ice cream, waffles, shaved ice, and zenzai, along with various drinks.
I opted for the HD Pork Loin Course (with a broth change) for 1,835 yen, and with a 5% discount using a coupon, the total came to 1,970 yen including tax. It's an all-you-can-eat experience, so you can enjoy as much as you want within the 100-minute time limit. I focused on pork loin, while my friend enjoyed the meatballs. We had a variety of vegetables and tried different broths, including Amani and olive oil lemon dashi, and spicy miso dashi.
Overall, it was a fun and affordable shabu-shabu experience with a wide variety of ingredients and a good atmosphere. The drink bar was reasonably priced and had a good selection. The restaurant seemed popular among young people and families, especially on Saturdays. It might be quieter on weekdays if you prefer a more peaceful dining experience. The service was prompt in adding more meat when requested, although there were some shortages of vegetables. It's the only shabu-shabu restaurant in front of Kokura Station, and it's popular among young people and families for good reason.
