I visited this restaurant during my break from work. I had noticed it before as I passed by, and I was curious about it. The place had been nicely renovated, and I recently realized this, so I decided to give it a try! They use a ticket system for ordering, and they also accept PayPay. I sat down and waited for my order to arrive. The food looked delicious at first sight! I took a bite, and it was incredibly juicy and tender, with a crispy coating. It was really tasty. I'm glad I got the large size! It made me feel happy. I will definitely visit again.

I felt like eating tonkatsu after a long time, so I decided to have lunch at Okuda-san's restaurant, where I have been a few times before. The restaurant is located near Eizan Mototanaka Station. It seemed like the image of the restaurant was more for local university students like Kyoto University, rather than easily accessible from Kyoto Station or Hankyu. However, when I went today, I noticed that there were quite a few people who didn't speak Kansai dialect and a variety of customers were there. I thought the restaurant would open at 11:30, but it was changed to 12:00. When I arrived 10 minutes early, there were already three groups of people waiting in line. Since the restaurant was renovated, it was my first time using the new ticket vending machine system. It was a bit confusing for many customers, including myself, even though the latest model machine accepted credit cards. I usually order the katsudon, but this time I ordered the lean katsu with less fat. I chose the regular size rice. Although the timing of placing the order was not ideal, it took less than 30 minutes for the food to be served. Maybe the kitchen became smaller or the number of dishes that could be cooked at once decreased. I thought the lean katsu would be smaller compared to regular tonkatsu, but it was actually the same size. The lean katsu was very tender, with no fat, and easy to eat! The skin was also trimmed of excess fat, so it wasn't greasy at all. At first, I thought there was not enough demiglace sauce, but when mixed with the mustard on the side and eaten with the lean katsu, it was surprisingly delicious! I never thought that demiglace sauce and mustard would go so well together. The shredded cabbage side dish was quite substantial, and I didn't need to upgrade to a larger portion of rice. The miso soup had a hint of sansho pepper, which paired well with the katsu. The price was 1350 yen. I heard that there was a 100 yen price increase in June this year. Nevertheless, if you want to casually enjoy tonkatsu in Kyoto, I highly recommend Okuda-san's restaurant. The restaurant has also become cleaner, so why not stop by and try it out?

I went to the restaurant for lunch on a regular day. Since there was no garage at the shop, I parked at a nearby coin parking before entering. Inside the shop, there was a ticket machine where you could make a purchase through a touch panel. I bought a ticket and then sat at the designated seat. The shop was clean and had a sense of cleanliness. This time, I ordered the roast pork cutlet set with a change to miso soup for an additional ¥250, totaling ¥1500. The freshly fried cutlet arrived, and it was incredibly thick. It was topped with demi-glace sauce, so I indulged starting from the middle. The outside was crispy, and the inside was juicy, but the thickness gave it a great chewy texture. That day, my back tooth happened to be in bad condition, making it a bit challenging to eat. However, the thickness allowed me to fully taste the flavor of the meat. The rice was the same price as well. This time, the miso soup was a bit disappointing as it had a strong miso flavor, but lacked the taste of pork. Other customers seemed to enjoy the pork cutlet bowl.

The restaurant has been renovated and introduced touch panel ticket machines. The interior has become cleaner, but it now has a more modern fast food-like atmosphere, losing its previous down-to-earth charm which is a bit disappointing. The tonkatsu comes with a demi-glace style sauce already on it. The sauce has a vague taste, so I end up adding more sauce or soy sauce. It lacks a bit in the depth of flavor and unity with the meat and breading. The portion size is good.

This is the new location! It's recommended to choose from the vending machine first and then take a seat, so you don't inconvenience those behind you. Here I had the pork cutlet bowl and the jumbo pork cutlet. The staff was very friendly and provided great service. The jumbo portion was really big! Personally, I didn't like it too much because I briefly felt a meaty smell.

I entered the restaurant around 7 pm. I ordered the Loin Cutlet Set Meal with extra rice. The rice, miso soup, and salad were average. However, I thought the tonkatsu was a bit greasy. Just like other restaurants nearby, the oil used for frying tends to deteriorate quickly in set meal restaurants. I believe that if they change the oil more frequently, the food would taste even better. Thank you for the meal.

Visited for dinner.
- Katsudon (small size) around ¥800
- Changed to miso soup +¥200
This tonkatsu restaurant near Kyoto University is known for being cheap and delicious. As expected, both the katsudon and miso soup had a strong flavor of sansho pepper! The small size might be enough for women. The fluffy egg and simmered tonkatsu were really delicious!!! However, the breading came off easily and there was a lot of broth, making it a bit difficult to eat the rice with chopsticks. It would be nice if they provided spoons. (They might give you one if you ask the staff!)

After class, I went to dinner with a friend from the same university. We decided to go to this restaurant at my friend's request. There were already several bikes parked in front of the restaurant, indicating its popularity. I ordered the cheese cutlet, which cost just under 1200 yen. When I took a bite, the cheese cutlet and sauce blended perfectly, making it very delicious. I quickly finished my meal because it was so tasty. The restaurant is located in a slightly inconvenient place, but it's definitely worth a visit.

The restaurant opened at 11:30 on Sunday with three customers already there. I ordered the miso katsu with extra sauce (1100 yen) from the ticket machine because last time the demi sauce was a bit lacking. It took about 20 minutes for the food to arrive, which was a bit slow. They seem to pound the meat only after the order is placed, which is nice, but there was quite a long line of customers waiting outside. The sauce had a strong flavor and was delicious, but the breading on the katsu tended to come off easily, leaving the meat exposed. This was a bit disappointing compared to previous visits.

I visited around 18:55 on Sunday. There were 3 tables with customers and 2 individuals dining alone. I ordered the Katsu Curry Don for 900 yen (with a small rice portion for -50 yen). It was different from regular Katsu Curry as it had a noticeable dashi flavor, giving it a curry udon-like taste. The Fukujinzuke (pickles) paired really well with it. However, the red miso soup didn't seem to complement it as much.

I visited around 19:35 on a regular day. There were two customers at the counter.
- Katsudon, small size, normal rice portion, 750 yen
Since it was a small size, the pork cutlet was small, but there was plenty of egg and the rice portion was not too small, so it was a sufficient amount for me. It was delicious with plenty of sansho pepper sprinkled on top. I thought it was just the main dish, but it also came with two pieces of pickled radish and red miso soup.

Miso katsu set meal for 1150 yen. Rice can be served in a large portion for free, so I tried it. It came in a bowl. I was surprised, but I finished it. The miso katsu was delicious. The miso soup had a hint of sansho pepper. It's a bit unsettling to sit alone at the counter.

I visited the restaurant around 18:35 in the afternoon. It was crowded, with one group waiting ahead of me, so I lined up behind them. I ordered the small set meal with miso cutlet for 950 yen. The dish arrived at 18:50. It seemed like a perfect size for a woman. The fatty part on the edge was also very delicious. The miso sauce was tasty and went well with the red miso soup. It wasn't too salty, allowing me to enjoy the pickles as well. Overall, it was really good.

Near Kyoto University, there is a tonkatsu restaurant that used to operate in a temporary location, but has now successfully moved to a renovated space across the street. They offer a special where you can upgrade to a large size tonkatsu for only 250 yen more from the regular 1250 yen hirekatsu set. They also provide free extra rice for those who want a larger portion, or a 50 yen discount for a smaller portion. The tonkatsu is cooked perfectly with a delicious sauce, and the rice portion is generous. Many customers around me were ordering the katsudon, so I am tempted to try that next time.

Kyoto is a tonkatsu restaurant called Moto Tanaka. They carefully pound the meat after receiving the order. After the renovation of the old store, they switched to a ticket vending machine system, which can be confusing and time-consuming to choose from. Also, the machine is located at the entrance, so when customers line up, the automatic door is left open and it gets cold. The pork cutlet with rice set costs 1100 yen. The cutlet is delicious, but I wish the sauce was more creative, as it currently tastes like homemade sauce.

Kyoto's famous tonkatsu restaurant, Okuda, has returned to its original location after a renovation of the entire building. They had been operating in a temporary store across the street since March 2021, but now they are back after about two years. The price of the Hire Katsu set meal with small rice has been reduced by 50 yen to 1200 yen. The taste remains as delicious as ever. However, the introduction of a ticket machine system and the fact that the cooking area is no longer visible from the counter have slightly diminished the charm of Okuda. It was also a bit cold inside. It was impressive to see many students ordering the Katsudon dish.

Visited for lunch on the weekend. There was no wait, so I sat at the counter. Since it was my first time, I decided to go with the "Rosukatsu set meal" (980 yen). The katsu that was served had a beautiful appearance, topped with demi-glace sauce. It came with cabbage and potato salad as side dishes. The first bite surprised me with how tender the katsu was. It was the fatty part on the edge, but it was incredibly soft. The demi-glace sauce was light in flavor. The person next to me ordered the miso katsu with a large size katsu, which looked very filling. It seemed like many people were ordering the miso katsu, so I think I'll try that next time. The katsu was really tender and delicious. Thank you for the meal.

[2020.9.21 (First Visit)] ・Rosu Tonkatsu Set Meal 980 yen (including tax) The set meal includes tonkatsu, cabbage, potato salad, rice, miso soup, and pickles, and I opted for a large serving of rice. The tonkatsu here comes already topped with demi-glace sauce. I haven't seen tonkatsu with demi-glace sauce before, and the aroma is different from the usual tonkatsu sauce, making it quite appetizing. The breading is thin, and the meat is about 1.5cm thick, with the lean part being juicy and flavorful. The fatty part, while not thickly cut, still has a rich flavor that spreads in your mouth, showing that they have selected good quality meat. The slightly acidic demi-glace sauce complements this richness well. I recommend trying black salt with a hint of sulfur smell on the fatty part, as it enhances the flavor. The rice is slightly soft, which helps to enjoy the meal. The cabbage is topped with mayonnaise, but it also tastes great with the demi-glace sauce. The potato salad contains apples, adding a subtle sweetness that refreshes your palate. It's rare to find such satisfying tonkatsu for under 1,000 yen. This place, located in a student area, offers a unique dining experience. Check out my blog for more details: https://gourmetyossy-blog.com/tonkatsuokuda/
