I had to come to Karasuma Oike for work in Kyoto, so I thought I might as well eat curry while I'm here. I arrived early at TADKA, around 11:50 am, and I was the first one there. However, they didn't open until a little after 12 pm, so I had to wait outside in the scorching heat of Kyoto. Once they opened, I paid at the counter and sat down. The interior of the restaurant felt like India with its warmth. The curry arrived fairly quickly, and I ordered the non-vegetarian chicken with basmati rice. It was very delicious.

A famous restaurant known for Asian and ethnic cuisine. It is definitely not just limited to curry, but truly Indian cuisine. The main dish at this restaurant is called a "meal" which is a typical South Indian set meal where rice is served together with various dishes. Customers are required to place their order and pay upfront at this restaurant. After walking in the scorching heat of Kyoto, I arrived at the restaurant drenched in sweat. I decided to start by quenching my thirst with an Indian beer. I ordered the non-vegetarian meal with chicken. However, the fried eggplant curry was swapped out, so I added it back and asked to remove the pepper soup instead. The meal consists of several curries and chicken which you mix with rice according to your preference. While it is recommended to eat with your hands, I used a spoon. The spices are strong, allowing you to enjoy a variety of flavors by mixing and matching. I personally enjoyed each item individually first, then mixed coconut rice and beet curry together, adding all the other curries and kootu on top. Delicious! So tasty!! The vegetarian meal is also very satisfying. Indian cuisine is truly fascinating.

Non-veg meals for 1750 yen, with an option to switch to Indian rice for an additional 200 yen. Choose between chicken or fish, I chose chicken this time. Arrived at the restaurant just after opening to find 5 customers already in line. Entered at 12:05, selected my meal and paid upfront. At 12:20, the food was served. The Non-veg meal included three types of chicken curry and various condiments to mix into the rice, allowing for a personalized taste experience. The meal had complex flavors thanks to the spices, creating an ethnic atmosphere that made me feel like I was in South India. The restaurant had a pleasant spice aroma and the interior design added to the overall experience. Thank you for the delicious meal.

I enjoyed a South Indian meal at "TADKA," where the texture of the walls and antique decor inside the restaurant was very nice. The meal included Sambar for spiciness, Rasam and Poriyal for the flavor and texture of the vegetables, Pachadi for creaminess and acidity, and Beetroot for a touch of saltiness. Mixing and matching these dishes to suit your taste is the true pleasure of having a meal. It was incredibly delicious with a nice blend of spices. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

This is my second time using the lunch menu here. The main dish is a meal set with curry, and the side dishes are delicious and authentic. The soft drink menu is also extensive. You can also order paratha as an additional item. On this day, the lentils and beetroot curry was particularly delicious.

The South Indian set meal at TADKA (Kyoto, Karasuma Oike) was incredibly delicious! I chose the full meal set with South Indian rice instead of the regular rice, which included pickles, grilled eggplant, iced chai, and various dishes such as matankorambu, tayil pachadi, 5 types of dried vegetables, sambar, rasam, pakora, rape blossoms, kariflavorful poliyal, beet and lemon pickle, wada, and appalam. The South Indian rice was bomni rice (you can have one refill, and I certainly did!). We arrived at 12:00 and had to wait for 11 people (including those with reservations) before they opened at 12:02.

Kyoto has many delicious curry restaurants, among them is the main branch that has been selected as one of the top 100. I had been wanting to try it for a while but never got around to it, and was starting to lose interest. However, when I tried to go to another restaurant and found it closed, I stumbled upon the main branch with no line, so I decided to go in for lunch. I ordered the Full Meals, which includes curry with today's meat (mutton on this day) and today's fish, along with 8 vegetable dishes. It cost 2300 yen. The vegetable dishes were quite unique, often using ingredients like sugar cane and spices. The flavors were quite distinct and somewhat authentically Indian, but personally, I found the curries at nearby restaurants like Kariru and Karelu to be much tastier. Nevertheless, some people may enjoy this style. Overall, I had been wanting to try this place for 5 years, so in that sense, I'm glad I finally did. It was crowded, so I don't think I'll be going back again.

The atmosphere is definitely unique. The texture and taste of the swordfish are excellent. The vegetable dishes seem skillfully prepared, and I would like to try the veg set again. However, I personally prefer dishes with more curry (meat juices) rather than stir-fried dishes. The set menu options are limited, but each dish is introduced online, which I found informative. The blue bana was unimpressive on my first visit. The sambal is delicious. Overall, I felt that the restaurant lacks a strong distinctive feature. With minimal salt and chili, the dishes are healthy and easy to enjoy, but a bit more sharpness and stimulation could be expected, even in just one dish.

Before the store opened, there were about 6 people waiting outside. Since we had a reservation, we were able to get right in front of the store. The store opened promptly at 11:30, and we ordered inside. We hadn't decided what to order, so we ended up making the people behind us wait... I chose the non-vegetarian meal and decided to have a milk coffee after the meal. After waiting for about 10 minutes, the food was served. There were many small dishes, but since there was no explanation, I wasn't sure what they were... I enjoyed mixing them little by little with the rice. The taste changes depending on the combination of side dishes mixed with the rice, so it was enjoyable throughout. Rice refills were allowed, so I took advantage of that and left feeling full. Thank you for the meal˘◡˘.

Located a 5-7 minute walk from Karasuma Oike Station, Indian restaurant TADKA is a popular spot that often has a line forming before noon. Specializing in South Indian cuisine, this restaurant has been selected as one of the top 100 curry restaurants in 2019 and 2020, as well as one of the top 100 Asian and Ethnic restaurants in 2022. The Non-Veg Meals we tried consisted of a colorful and beautiful plate with 7 different curries and condiments. Each curry is prepared with different levels of spiciness, acidity, and coconut flavor, allowing you to savor a variety of flavors with each bite. The tuna curry, made with daily changing curry, stood out with its perfect balance of spiciness and seafood umami, complementing the other curries excellently. Even upon leaving the restaurant, there was still a line waiting outside, showcasing its popularity. Be sure to visit with some extra time on hand to fully enjoy the experience. Thank you for the meal!

Today, I went to an Indian restaurant near Karasuma Oike for lunch. The restaurant is called TADKA and specializes in serving "Meals," a type of set meal popular in South India. I had previously dined at this restaurant for dinner. For lunch, it seems you have to place your order before being seated. The menu ranged from a simple Vegetarian Set for 1,200 yen to a full Meals for 2,300 yen. I decided to try the Vegetarian Meals. After placing my order, I was shown to a table. The restaurant had a simple dining atmosphere. Each table had instructions on how to eat the Meals, making it easy for beginners. After a short wait, the Meals arrived on a round tray. In the center was a thin crispy cracker called "Appalam," with rice underneath. I opted to upgrade to Biryani rice for an additional 150 yen to enjoy the authentic taste. The menu listed 7 different items that came in cups, which you mix into the rice while eating. I tried each one separately, mixing them into the rice. The Appalam could be eaten as is or crushed and mixed with the rice for texture. The Rasam was a light peppery soup that could be enjoyed on its own or mixed with the rice. The Poriyal was a dry vegetable dish that added texture when mixed with the rice. Finally, mixing in the Pachadi, a yogurt side dish, gave a mild flavor. I finished every last bite. The portion was just right, and I didn't need a refill of rice. It was more authentic than I expected, and although I struggled a bit with how to eat it, it was a unique experience. It might be one of the few places in Kyoto where you can enjoy the authentic taste of South Indian cuisine.

The shop has a narrow entrance but a deep eel sleeping area. You order and pay at the entrance. There is a sign on the wall saying "Recommendation of eating by hand," which makes you a little nervous. The curry, which came with a spoon, had a mild spiciness and was very light. It was a very authentic curry but also beginner-friendly. Thank you for the meal!

I ordered the Veggie Meals (1650 yen) and arrived right at noon on a weekday when the restaurant opened. It seemed to be quite popular, with 10 customers already there. The curry was very healthy, and you can enjoy mixing 8 different types of curry together.

Arrived around 1:30 pm. There were 4 people waiting outside, followed by 3 more. There are 3 counter seats and 6 tables. It took about 30 minutes to get inside. The line was cleared by around 2:15 pm. The menu includes vegetarian, non-vegetarian, all-in, and a couple of curry options. You order and pay at the entrance. It took about 5 minutes from ordering to the food arriving. I chose the non-vegetarian option for 1750 yen, with a choice of fish or chicken. The meal came in a silver dish with curry, dal, yogurt, and 7 other items, along with rice topped with a crispy cracker-like item, pickles, and a fried item similar to tempura, totaling 10 items to mix and enjoy. There are instructions on how to eat on the table, so there's no need to worry. There are even instructions for those who want to eat with their hands, with finger bowls provided. The sides are not spicy but have a good amount of spices. Each item is carefully made and has a rich flavor. They are excellent on their own and create new flavors when mixed together. You can't eat casually, as each bite brings a new taste experience. The restaurant seems to have gained popularity by following South Indian techniques while adapting them to suit Japanese tastes.

Kyoto, Karasuma Oike, "Tarka". There is always a line at famous restaurants, not just curry shops. I don't like waiting in line and try to avoid it as much as possible, but sometimes I have to. That's how good the food is. While waiting in line, it's quite annoying when someone cuts in line or joins the line saying "excuse me" with a smile, the so-called representative line. Recently, there is a growing trend of acknowledging that cutting in line is not morally right, and many restaurants have signs warning against it. Some even come out to warn people outside. On this day, I arrived about 15 minutes before opening. There were only 3 people in line, which seemed just right. It was hot, but I thought it was okay. I'll wait. A common sight. And then, at that moment, a man appeared saying "excuse me", seemingly with the woman in front of me. Like a university professor. Hey, what's this? That's bad manners. It felt very out of place. No one said anything. There were about 2 people behind me. It was very awkward. Everyone would be able to enter when the restaurant opened. It was too awkward to complain. Well, let's just focus on eating with this awkward feeling. When the time came and we entered, we waited for a seat and heard "excuse me" again outside. Hey, Kyoto people are so rude, I thought. Eventually, this phenomenon happened again. Hey! Well, let's leave that aside. Let's go back to talking about curry. The curry here is very delicious. They seem to have a commitment to their veggie curry, but I, being a glutton, lean towards non-veggie. I had the non-veggie with tuna and less rice. Very Indian. Very good aroma. Very delicious. The tuna dish had an exquisite spice sauce. Very spicy, very acidic. All the dishes were spicy and very stimulating. The pickles were like achar, a taste I've loved since a long time ago. I remember when I happened to go to India in the past and kept asking for refills of this. It was a very luxurious lunch. Thank you for the meal. Restaurant Name: "Tarka" Genre: Indian cuisine, Indian curry, Cafe Address: 138 Sakyo-cho, Oshikoji-dori Takakura Nishi-iru, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Bain Oak Cribea 1F Phone: 075-212-8872 Business Hours: Coffee Stand 8:00-10:00 Lunch 11:30-15:30 Closed on Mondays and Sundays Language: Japanese Thank you for your cooperation.

This time we went on a curry tour and visited a restaurant called "TADKA" where you can enjoy South Indian cuisine. The location is just a few minutes walk from Karasuma Oike Station on the subway. It's located on a small street off the main road. As expected of a restaurant selected as one of the top 100, even though we went at a time outside the lunch peak on a holiday, there was a line outside. The restaurant is not very big, the turnover is not very fast, so we waited for about 30 minutes to finally get inside. Since it's a pay-first system, we placed our order, sat down, and waited a few more minutes for our food. It's better to go with some extra time to spare. The menu has two options, a simple one and a set menu, and you can choose with or without meat. I wanted to try a variety of dishes, so I went for the "Veg Meals" which comes with 8 side dishes (tax included 1,650 yen). The dishes for the day were: Pachadi, Sambar, Goma Kolumbu, Rasam, Spinach Kootu, Green Mango White Sauce Sundal, Beet Poriyal, Carrot Pickle, Wada, Rice (can be changed to Basmati Rice for an additional 150 yen), and Papadam. The total payment was 1,800 yen. Food - The overall taste is mild. Not very sour or spicy, not oily, and on the lighter side. However, it's not bland, some dishes have distinct flavors, with the aroma of spices and the sweetness of coconut. Each dish has different flavors and textures, but they all go well together. The side dishes other than the basic dishes like Sambar and Rasam were delicious, and the meat dishes that other customers were having looked really good, so it's better to add more side dishes even if it costs a bit more. I recommend adding more side dishes rather than changing the rice to Basmati, as I didn't feel the uniqueness of Basmati rice. Service - You pay first and then wait for your food at your table. It's like a cafe style. The side dishes seem to change daily. It's posted next to the cash register, so you won't know until you enter. Since the waiting time is quite long, if you can see outside, you might be able to quickly place your order once inside. It took a while to get in, but after that, the food came out quite quickly. Atmosphere - The restaurant has depth and is dimly lit. It has a stylish bar-like design. The seating is mainly tables, with a few seats at the counter near the entrance. Cost performance - These types of meals tend to be a bit pricey... It's quite expensive for lunch, but you just have to accept it. Overall - The restaurant leaves an impression with its stylish atmosphere. Meals like this really stand out. Personally, I'm not a big fan of trendy restaurants, but I think it's worth a visit.

This is curry from South India. In South India, they don't eat naan. There are several dishes lined up, each with its own unique flavor. Some have a strong sour taste, while others have a strong spicy taste. When mixed together, it tastes surprisingly similar to Japanese curry. It turns out that the key to South Indian curry is a well-balanced flavor. Even dishes that may seem unusual are delicious when eaten at the right place.

Located on the first floor of a simple and unpretentious building on the north side between Mancho-dori and Oshikoji-dori in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto. The exterior is modest and the interior has a cozy Oriental atmosphere. The menu is focused on meals, with options categorized into Vegetarian, Non-vegetarian, Full, and Simple. The Simple Non-vegetarian set allows you to choose between meat or fish curry, with the option to have extra rice for free. The Mutton Chettinad is rich in flavor with a strong presence of mutton that is tender and flavorful, without any overpowering smell. The Tomato Pappu has a gentle texture that showcases the natural ingredients, while the Rasam has a spicy kick and refreshing acidity. The Achar is crunchy and adds a unique texture to the dish, allowing for a change in flavor when mixed in. The Poriyal is light and has a smooth taste, served with fluffy blended rice. The meals are also vegan-friendly, with a focus on eating with your hands. This restaurant operates on a pre-order and pre-payment system at the entrance, catering to a diverse range of customers.

When I visited Kyoto before, I was intrigued by this place that was surprisingly close to my hotel! I had heard good things about this Indian restaurant in Nagoya and decided to visit it next time I came to Kyoto. The restaurant is located in Nakagyo-ku, Sakyo-cho, about a 10-minute walk northeast from Karasuma Oike Station Exit 1. It is listed in the Bib Gourmand category in the Michelin Guide 2021 Kyoto. The vivid green rain gutter on the exterior is quite striking. If you arrive late for opening hours, there can be quite a long line... However, I was the only one waiting in line, so I was able to enter without any hassle. First, you place your order and pay at the counter near the entrance. During lunchtime, they serve curry plates and meals. There are three options: Non-Veg, Veg, and Full, where you can choose between meat, fish, or both. I chose the Non-Veg meal for ¥1,750, which came with Chicken Pepper Fry. The plate includes various Indian side dishes such as Sambar, Rasam, Aviyal, and a curry with turnips and coconut. The combination of sweet vegetables, the acidity of various dishes, and the crispy Papad and Wada create a delicious harmony. It would be even better if they explained which dish is which when serving. I also enjoyed a glass of white natural wine from Veneto for ¥900, which paired perfectly with the meal. The lemon cake for ¥380 was unexpectedly the dessert of the day, and I took it home to enjoy the next morning. It had a slightly crunchy sugar glaze and a tangy lemon flavor that I couldn't resist. Apparently, Tarka has opened a second location that offers a course-style Indian cuisine, so I look forward to visiting there next time. Thank you for the delicious meal!
