The other day, I saw a feature on Ootoya on TV and it made me want to visit after a long time. So, for today's lunch, I decided to go there. I arrived around 2:30 pm, so the restaurant was empty and I was promptly seated by the staff. They recommended the Fried Oyster Set, but looking at the menu, I was quite overwhelmed by the variety of options. After much contemplation, I decided on Ootoya's most popular Chicken and Vegetable in Black Vinegar Sauce Set (with chewy five-grain rice, large portion/810 yen) and a side of Kimidama (100 yen). My girlfriend ordered the Ootoya-style Chicken Nanban Set (with chewy five-grain rice, large portion/728 yen) and a side of Homemade Tofu with freshly shaved bonito flakes (182 yen). Ootoya prides itself on in-store cooking rather than using a central kitchen, so I was expecting the dishes to take a while to be prepared. However, to my surprise, all the dishes arrived in about 10 minutes. Even though the restaurant was empty, the efficiency in serving the dishes showed that their operations are well-managed. At first glance, the portions seemed larger than I had expected from looking at the menu. By the way, changing from white rice to chewy five-grain rice is a complimentary service, and you can also request a large portion (180g to 300g) for free. I wanted to feel full with healthy multigrain rice, so I asked for a large portion of five-grain rice, and it came in a bowl, which was quite amusing. The vegetables coated in thick black vinegar sauce were deep-fried, giving them a nice texture and allowing the flavor of the vegetables to shine through. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, with a crispy exterior and a succulent interior. My girlfriend's Chicken Nanban had sizable pieces of chicken thigh, perfectly fried to a crispy texture, which paired well with the tartar sauce drizzled on top. The tartar sauce on the side was rich in egg flavor and not too tangy, more like a salad dressing. The homemade tofu, made fresh every morning in each store, had a strong soybean taste, and the freshly shaved bonito flakes added a perfect umami touch. The Kimidama, marinated in thick soy sauce, had a rich yolk flavor. I couldn't help but think, "I want to take this to go!" Apart from these, the sweet and savory bonito flakes sprinkled on top, and the side salad (cabbage, tomato, broccoli, potato salad) that came with my meal were all well-seasoned, and considering the price and portion sizes, it felt like a great deal. As we finished our meal, we were served warm tea, which refreshed our palates. The staff here maintained a smiling face and provided pleasant service, making us feel satisfied and healthy after the meal. With such a wide range of menu options, I would definitely like to visit again. Thank you for the meal!
