The atmosphere of the shop was nice, and the staff were friendly. When I went during snack time, there were about 3 groups waiting, but the turnover was good so I was seated quickly. The set of roasted green tea and mitarashi warabi mochi was satisfying, with about 5 cups of green tea and 5 small pieces of mitarashi mochi. The warabi mochi was soft and delicious. I could see why this place has high ratings on Tabelog.

I came across a sweet shop in Nezu-Saka that seemed to have a nice atmosphere, so I decided to go in. I'm not sure how long the shop has been around, but it doesn't seem like a new establishment based on the ambiance. They offer a variety of classic Japanese sweets such as mitarashi dango, anmitsu, kakigori, and warabi mochi. The menu seemed quite extensive for a shop with this kind of atmosphere. I went with three friends and we each ordered a different type of sweet. The mitarashi dango was the most delicious, followed by the anmitsu. The sweets were made in a traditional way, which was a nice change from the more elaborate sweets that are popular nowadays. The prices were reasonable considering the location, which is often crowded with tourists.

When it comes to Kyoto, you think of matcha. I felt like having matcha dessert and made a detour. The taste of mitarashi dango was delicious, but what I liked the most was the sauce! The taste of soy sauce and brown sugar came through clearly. The matcha warabi mochi was soft and moist, with a delicious melt-in-your-mouth texture. I enjoyed it simply and deliciously.

Located near Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Umeen is a place I found on Instagram. I saw their cylindrical-shaped mitarashi dango and thought it looked delicious, so I visited with the hope of getting in if it wasn't too crowded. I arrived after 3 pm and there was only one group ahead of us, so we were lucky to get a table after a short wait. I ordered the mitarashi dango and matcha warabi mochi drink set (Green Tea) while my companion got the Uji matcha sweet potato shiratama + matcha warabi mochi shaved ice. The mitarashi dango I was looking forward to was warm and delicious, with a crispy outer layer. I quickly finished the set of 5 dango (*⁰▿⁰*). The matcha warabi mochi was soft and tasty as well. But the real highlight was the mitarashi dango, highly recommended! Thank you for the meal.

I don't really understand, but the taste of mitarashi sauce seems a bit weak (՞. ̫ .՞) The warabi mochi is incredibly rich and delicious, and I was surprised when it was served with a spoon...?? But it cuts easily and that was surprising (՞. ̫ .՞) I'm not a big fan of mochi, but I like that it has a good texture (՞. ̫ .՞) The staff seems a bit unfriendly, probably because they are busy (՞. ̫ .՞)

There is a cafe on the slope leading to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The mitarashi dango looked delicious. It was a weekday in February, but the cafe was so busy that there was a line, and the atmosphere was nice and Kyoto-like. The anko was not too sweet, giving off a traditional taste. It was popular among foreigners as well.

I was already full, so I got the food to go. I regret not eating at the restaurant because the dumplings became tough. The dumplings were also small and lacked substance. I think they would have been delicious if eaten fresh. Currently, I don't think the cost performance is good, it's definitely a tourist price. Eating in the atmosphere of the restaurant can make the food taste better, and the experience might have been different if I had dined in. But one time is enough.

The Mitarashi dango here is excellent. It's a must-visit shop when you go to Kiyomizu. The dango is in the shape of a rectangular prism, which is a unique feature. They grill the dango next to the register and serve it freshly baked. It has a nice crispy exterior and a delicious aroma. You can also get it to go, so be sure to check it out.

Umeen 2022/9/30 KUMA Survey (Daily Use) (80☆Excellent:/60◎Excellent/50◯Pass/40△Passing Grade) (Taste: 60%: Others 40%)
■ Overall Rating 77/100 points (Taste: 90 points)
Delicious traditional sweet shop with Mitarashi dango and Uji shaved ice.
■ Store Overview
The shop is located midway on Sanjo-zaka Street heading towards Kiyomizu. Despite the recent increase in nearby sweet shops, it is a long-established shop with its main shop in Kawaramachi. I have been using this shop frequently for 30 years since my first visit 10 years ago. The interior of the shop has a calm Japanese atmosphere, with Mitarashi dango and shaved ice as the main offerings. As for the taste, it's truly a traditional gem! The deliciousness remains unchanged from 30 years ago. Thank you for the meal.

■ Shop Atmosphere/Service 65/100 points 13pt
The calm Japanese-style interior of the shop is quite nice. The service is decent, but there was a slight coldness towards a group that had made a reservation for a school trip (constantly talking about time). For me, the service was good and normal, so it may depend on the individual staff.
■ Detailed Food Evaluation 90/100 points 54pt
◯Uji Kinshiro Shiratama Warabi Mochi
A shaved ice that features all the shop's appealing products. The slightly bitter and green taste of matcha spreads throughout, with the sweetness of the red bean paste, the chewy texture of the warabi mochi, and the satisfying bite and refreshing feel of the white rice dumplings offering a variety of flavors to enjoy, making it an excellent product.
◯Mitarashi dango
A type of cylindrical dango skewered on a stick. It is sweet after being grilled over fire, just like in the old days.
■ Cost Evaluation 50/100 points 10pt
Standard shaved ice at a family restaurant ¥439-¥879
Price difference depending on toppings
Umeen ¥1180
Considering the full topping, the price is 34% higher. Compared to other famous sweet shops on Tabelog, it is slightly cheaper. In terms of price, it feels like a passable point, but it may feel a bit high for the average person's budget.

Near Kiyomizu-dera Temple, this shop offers sweet treats that are perfect for tired bodies after a day of walking, especially with all the hills around the temple. The elegantly skewered mitarashi dango has a nice balance of sweetness and saltiness, while the mochi is soft and pairs well with the bitterness and sweetness of the matcha. The matcha shaved ice is just right, with a perfect blend of sweetness and bitterness that truly helped to relax my tired body. The shop has a traditional Japanese atmosphere, and the calm interior made for a very relaxing experience.

Founded in 1927, this Kyoto café specializes in traditional Japanese sweets. I ordered the anmitsu, which was incredibly satisfying and perfect for anyone who loves Japanese sweets! The dish came with a side of black honey that you could pour generously over the dessert. The café was very popular and always busy, but the turnover was quick with customers coming and going. Located near Kiyomizu Temple, the café is easily accessible and that might be why it's so popular.

As I walked down Sannenzaka from Kiyomizu-dera, I noticed a shop selling square-shaped dango. I opted for takeout due to time constraints. I ordered a pack of 5 Mitarashi dango for 450 yen (tax included) and added kinako powder. The shop accepted electronic payments, which was convenient. The dango was easy to eat, not too sweet but with a rich flavor. Each stick cost 90 yen (tax included) and made for a great snack.

I ordered a set of dango and warabi mochi. The dango was chewy and coated in a sauce with just the right amount of sweetness and saltiness. The size of each piece was small and easy to eat, making it friendly for women as well. The staff at the restaurant were very friendly, and I would love to visit again if I have the chance. It's definitely become one of my favorite places to go!

It is recommended to take a bus from Gion Shijo Station as the restaurant is located over 1 km away from the station. You will need to walk 600m from the bus stop to reach the popular dessert shop "Umeen Kiyomizu Store". I discovered this shop while exploring around Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji temples, and it perfectly matches the atmosphere of Kyoto. I tried their signature square-shaped Mitarashi dango. The dango was freshly grilled next to the register, giving it a deliciously crispy texture. The sauce was sweet, but not too overpowering, allowing you to enjoy it bite after bite. I easily devoured 4 pieces. My companion ordered the Uji Kinugoshi Shiratama, which was a delightful combination of chewy shiratama with a subtle sweetness from the red beans.

Kyoto Umezono Shimizu store is a popular sweet shop located in Kiyomizu and Sannenzaka. It's a perfect place to take a break during your stroll. They have samples displayed outside, showcasing treats like anmitsu and shaved ice. It seems that their Mitarashi dango is quite famous!
- Uji Kinjoshiratama: A generous portion of round shaved ice topped with plenty of red beans and five white balls of shiratama. The fluffy ice and elegant red beans make for a delicious shaved ice treat. The shiratama is chewy and delightful!
- Uji Milk with Chestnut Kuri Shibukawa: You can add toppings, so I added chestnut kuri shibukawa to the Uji milk. It's nice that you can add a substantial portion of chestnut kuri shibukawa for an additional 100 yen!
- Matcha Shaved Ice with Matcha: I paired the slightly bitter matcha with the shaved ice. Umezono is perfect for exploring the surroundings of Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji, allowing you to fully enjoy the Kyoto atmosphere. There are other branches like the Kawaramachi store and Sanjo Teramachi store. I'd love to try their Mitarashi dango next time!

After visiting Kiyomizu-dera Temple, we were tired and craving something sweet. We decided to stop at a plum orchard on the way to the bus stop. It was a weekday during spring break, but the place was crowded with long lines everywhere. We had to wait for a table at the plum orchard as well. Since there were five of us, we ended up sitting separately. The staff seemed a bit stressed and on edge, probably due to the busy day. We ordered the Mitarashi dango set with matcha tea. I wasn't sure if I could finish the dango, but I ended up eating them quickly. Sweet treats really hit the spot after a tiring day. The rice cakes were soft and I could have probably eaten two more. The adults were served warm tea, while the children were given water. However, the water had a strange smell and taste, so we couldn't drink it. Maybe it would be better to serve children tea as well. Overall, it was a satisfying meal.

When I entered through the warm curtain, the room was cozy. The matcha wasn't too strong and easy to drink. The mitarashi dango had just the right amount and was slightly warm. The warabi mochi seemed to be made with black sugar, not too sweet and easy to eat. I think it's nice for a little break.

Today, I went to the Kiyomizu area in Kyoto. I stumbled upon a sweets shop on Sannenzaka called Umegarden. It had a traditional Japanese atmosphere and is a well-established tea house with several locations in Kyoto. They offer treats like mitarashi dango, and there were delicious-looking models displayed outside the shop. I was seated at a table with cushions and checked out the menu. They had options like mitarashi dango, warabi mochi, and anmitsu. This time, I decided to try the mitarashi dango.
Each skewer had four dango balls, and a set of five skewers was served on one plate. The dango balls were rectangular in shape, which was unique. They were freshly grilled at the counter and served piping hot. I took a bite, and the dango had a chewy texture. The crispy outer layer gave a nice aroma, and the sauce was on the sweeter side. I finished them all in no time. The price was very affordable, and you even get change back if you pay with just one coin. It's a casual and enjoyable place to visit for some mitarashi dango.

I had been curious about the dango shop Mitsumashi and the dango there was rich and flavorful! There were 5 pieces per serving, but they were surprisingly small so I could eat one in just one bite. The isomaki was also rich and satisfying! Next time, I want to go try the zenzai. Thank you for the delicious meal!
