I won a spot at the Snack Okan's debut event. The theme was "kindness like a grandmother's cooking," with delicious home-cooked dishes and recommended seasonal Japanese sake. The restaurant, located in Kichijoji, serves dishes based on the initials of "mame, goma, wakame, yasai, sakana, shitake, imo" (beans, sesame, seaweed, vegetables, fish, shiitake mushrooms, potatoes) as a motto for Japanese cuisine. The dishes served today were delicious and in line with this motto. The recommended seasonal sake, including Sabadesh, was all excellent, and the pairing of Sabadesh with moist mackerel cutlets was especially impressive.

On July 1, 2020, "Snack Okan" opened in Kichijoji. At "Snack Okan," there is a pop-up event store operated by "Nakamachi Ice Confectionery," which is known for its delicious shaved ice. "Nakamachi Ice Confectionery" is a popular shaved ice shop in Matsumoto, Nagano, which transforms into a summer-only store known for its shaved ice. The store is set to open in Kamakura, Kanagawa on July 3, 2021, but before that, it has started operating as a pop-up event store in Kichijoji. "Snack Okan" is affiliated with the popular hamburger restaurant "Ground Meat and Rice" in Kichijoji. The location is a 7-minute walk from Kichijoji Station North Exit, near Tokyu Kichijoji Department Store, on the 2nd floor of "Ground Meat and Rice." The menu includes flavors like "Sake Lees Cream with Azuki," "White Miso Cream with Azuki," "Shinshu Fresh Strawberries," "Fresh Earl's Melon," "Tomato x Cheese," and "Pistachio," among others. I tried the "Japanese Fruit Orchard" for 1,350 yen (tax included). The menu may change slightly, and more items are expected at the Kamakura store. The pop-up event store in Kichijoji by "Nakamachi Ice Confectionery" is scheduled until June 29, 2021, with the Kamakura store opening on July 3, 2021. The operating hours in Kichijoji are from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, but the post-emergency declaration hours are uncertain. "Snack Okan" is more of a casual snack bar than a traditional one, and it offers a cozy atmosphere. The "Japanese Fruit Orchard" shaved ice I tried was topped with gold leaf and a variety of fruits, making it delicious and refreshing. I recommend visiting the pop-up event store in Kichijoji before it ends on June 29, especially if you love shaved ice. The "Snack Okan" is also a recommended spot, although it is currently closed due to the ongoing situation. The shaved ice from "Nakamachi Ice Confectionery" was truly delicious.
