I had onigiri while enjoying the cherry blossoms at Jodo-ji Temple in Kyoto. I found Aoonigiri on the map while walking along the Philosopher's Path. They had a variety of onigiri available, such as salmon with salmon roe, green onion and spicy cod roe, and butterbur with Japanese pepper. I got the salmon with salmon roe and it was delicious! My friend got the green demon's claw and butterbur with Japanese pepper, and they were also tasty. The onigiri had fillings both on top and inside the rice ball. I wish I had bought more, they were all so good! Aoonigiri is located at 39-30 Jodoji Shimonantacho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. They are closed on Mondays. #KyotoLunch #KyotoGourmet

On this long-awaited day, I finally lined up and entered the shop to place my order on paper. I ordered Set A and three onigiri, and my anticipation grew as I waited. Finally, the dishes arrived - rolled omelette and mushroom miso soup. The rolled omelette was served at room temperature, but even when it cooled down, it still tasted amazingly delicious, as expected from a renowned restaurant! The miso soup had a fragrant broth, mushroom flavor, and a perfect balance of saltiness from the miso. It seemed like the soup was the star of the show... Now, onto the first onigiri - salmon. Following the menu description of "crispy seaweed on top," I took a bite as soon as it arrived. The crispy seaweed with a hint of sea flavor, the sticky and warm rice with just the right amount of salt, and the flavorful salmon created a golden combination that completely changed my perception of onigiri. The second onigiri was miso with green onions, and even though only the filling was different, the thick umami of the miso, the texture and flavor of the green onions, and the rice transformed into something like ochazuke, and I finished it in no time. Seriously delicious. Lastly, the salmon miso onigiri took the unique flavors to the next level, leaving me feeling as satisfied as after a hearty bowl of ramen. I truly want to go back to this place. I'm glad I went to this restaurant. ✨✨

Near Ginkaku-ji Temple, there is a rice ball specialty shop called Aoonigiri located near Jodo-ji Temple. They handcraft the rice balls right in front of you and you can enjoy them freshly made in a nostalgic atmosphere with live performances. The timing at this shop is everything - the timing of when they make the rice balls and when they serve them is all up to the shop owner. I ordered the following: - Mochi Genmai (glutinous brown rice) salt rice ball ¥210 - Cream cheese with bonito flakes rice ball ¥240 - Set A (3 rolled omelettes, miso soup) ¥320 The glutinous brown rice rice ball was a limited quantity item that I definitely wanted to try as a brown rice lover! Luckily, they still had some left. The texture of the rice ball was amazing - it had a popping sensation in the mouth and was chewy and delicious. The Cream cheese with bonito flakes rice ball was also delightful. The creamy richness of the cream cheese combined well with the strong soy sauce flavor of the bonito flakes. The white rice was incredibly smooth and chewy, almost disappearing in the mouth. The simplicity and perfect saltiness of the brown rice, as well as the distinct flavor of the white rice, made both rice balls delicious. The miso soup and rolled omelettes were also tasty, making the set with two rice balls more than satisfying. I also tried the T.O. Kimpa rice ball, a takeout exclusive item. I enjoyed it on the nearby Philosopher's Path. This rice ball was a collaboration with the famous Pinyo Restaurant, and you could tell it was delicious just by looking at it. The rice ball was generously filled with ingredients, and the nostalgic texture of the rice ball was comforting. Inside, there was a rolled omelette that I had enjoyed at the shop earlier. The live experience of having the rice balls handcrafted in front of you was a unique and enjoyable touch that added to the charm of the shop. I hope this wonderful shop continues to thrive.

The deliciousness of the warm onigiri made to order, we ordered and waited for about 15 minutes to eat in on a Sunday around 12:00 with 3 people. The shop was busy with people buying takeout as well. We had 2 onigiri, miso soup, and egg roll. It was satisfying around the 7th bite. There are some rules, but they are written under the menu so it's easy to understand. I want to eat here again!

If you come to Kyoto, you must visit this place where you can eat freshly made live onigiri. The location is in Higashiyama-ku, along the river in a secluded area. Sit down, write your order on a memo paper, and take it to the counter. No matter how many times you come, it's always nerve-wracking. During lunchtime, there is a rule that you must order 2 or more onigiri plus A to M, or 3 or more onigiri. The order is "salt onigiri, sujiko, sour plum" plus C. Instead of sushi geta, you'll get "onigeta" where freshly made onigiri is served one by one. The salt onigiri doesn't have seaweed wrapped around it, so you can taste the deliciousness of the onigiri directly. Even though rice grains stick to your hand, it's delicious! The crunchy pickled daikon radish goes well with it. From the second onigiri onwards, I enjoyed it with the ingredients. Be careful because the plum still has the seed in it. After finishing your meal, return all dishes to the counter. There is no parking lot, so you'll have to walk about 1 minute to the nearest parking lot. Onigiri makes people happy. It was delicious, thank you for the meal. Instagram: @masayan.310

After a meeting in Moriyama, I returned to Kyoto and found an interesting onigiri specialty store for lunch. I decided on a salt onigiri after looking at the menu, and they make each one fresh to order. The rice was soft and delicately seasoned, just right. I also had miso soup and rolled omelette as sides. For my second onigiri, I tried the spicy dried fish and bell pepper filling. It was delicious! The onigiri was surprisingly large, so I left feeling full. The total cost was 700 yen.

I went all the way to Mie with the goal of visiting Namihei-san, but somehow ended up in Kyoto city via Uji. I visited a rice ball shop that caught my eye on Instagram. 16:15 Entered, seated, and placed an order. 16:20 Food arrived. [Summary] Mochi Genmai Salt Rice Ball - 210 yen The chewy texture of the brown rice is just amazing. The perfect amount of salt makes it irresistible. Adult Nori Wasabi Rice Ball - 220 yen Fluffy rice, crispy seaweed, and delicious wasabi. I encountered a rice ball that melts in your mouth for the first time. It's amazing. Set A - 320 yen Three pieces of rolled omelette and miso soup set. The rolled omelette is a bit firm, not the trendy fluffy or creamy type, but a very solid egg dish. The miso soup with plenty of enoki mushrooms, tofu, and grated kelp is excellent. The dashi broth is also delicious.

I came to Kyoto wanting to visit this onigiri shop. It seems to be quite popular, with a constant stream of takeout customers and many regulars. You sit at the counter and write your order on a piece of paper. During lunchtime, you must order at least 2 onigiri plus a side dish like miso soup. The onigiri flavors available are salt, cod roe, and salmon miso. The set with miso soup costs 800 yen. The miso soup is filled with enoki mushrooms, tofu, and grated kelp. I started with the salt onigiri, which was soft and fluffy. The salt flavor was surprisingly strong, which caught me off guard. The way the onigiri was shaped was really impressive, it looked like it had been carefully molded multiple times to achieve that soft texture. It must be really tough for the person making them all by themselves. I wonder how many they make in a day.

Visited around 15:40 on April 23rd (Saturday) for the third time. I went with a friend this time to treat them to some good food. After reading reviews on Tabelog, I noticed that many reviewers highly recommended the salted rice balls, so I decided to try them along with a couple of other favorites. They were all delicious and the sushi chef's skill in shaping and seasoning the rice was exceptional. My friend also loved them and ended up ordering more, eventually eating four in total. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal!

The shop is small with only a counter and about 10 seats. You can write your order on a small piece of paper and hand it in. Takeout orders are welcome for even just one item. If you order for takeout, you get a 10 yen discount on all items compared to dining in. Additionally, pre-made onigiri in the shop are discounted by 20 yen, though they may not be available every day. The onigiri are triangle-shaped with ingredients sticking out at the top, a common type seen in specialty shops. Today's orders were: Takana (pickled mustard greens) for 200 yen, Negi Miso (leek miso) for 210 yen, and Aooni no Tsume (green demon's claw) for 210 yen. The Negi Miso was quite sweet and delicious. The Aooni no Tsume, despite its intimidating name, was not spicy but rather gently tasty with green peppers and dried young sardines as ingredients. The Takana had a good amount of leaves and a unique flavor from sesame oil, not too greasy. Each dish had a gentle and normal deliciousness, not trying to be too fancy. The seasoning was just right, and the onigiri were nicely shaped and fluffy. This shop is perfect for a snack during outdoor activities.

Located in Jodoji, Sakyo Ward. A specialty rice ball shop offering around 20 types of rice balls. Sets come with options like miso soup, rolled omelette, and pickles. Keyma curry and Ao-oni's Claw are recommended. The curry has just the right level of spiciness. Ao-oni's Claw is a spicy dried fish and green pepper combo. Both are delicious when freshly made. The softness with just the right amount of air inside is perfect.

Located in a very niche place, this onigiri shop can get quite crowded for dining in. Takeout is also available, but if you want to enjoy the crispy seaweed, dining in is recommended. I chose the salmon and seaweed tsukudani, along with the C set (pickled radish and miso soup) as an addition. The onigiri are made one by one for each customer at the counter. The seaweed is crispy and has an elegant aroma like the roasted seaweed from a high-end sushi restaurant. The rice is slightly soft, but when you chew it, you can taste the sweetness of the rice well. And then there's the pickled radish and enoki miso soup. It goes really well with the onigiri! All of this for 580 yen! I wish I could have eaten more~ There are so many varieties, so I'm looking forward to my next visit!

The rice balls served by the owner, who may seem uncommunicative and unfriendly, have a craftsman-like quality that adds to their appeal. The fillings are delicious, and the seasoning in the rice itself is just right even without fillings. I highly recommend the chicken mince and sweet and spicy squid fillings. I make sure to visit this place every time I come to Kyoto!

This is an onigiri specialty shop located at Jodo-ji Temple. I visited around 12 o'clock on a weekday and was able to enter without waiting in line. I tried the Salted Salmon (¥250), Spicy Cod Roe with Green Onions (¥230), and Pickled Radish with Miso Soup (¥200). The white rice, cooked in a feather pot, was warm, fluffy, and delicious. The onigiri was softly and generously packed. Both the salted salmon and spicy cod roe with green onions were filled with luxurious ingredients, and I was very satisfied. They had just the right amount of saltiness. It was quite delicious! Thank you for the meal!

The popular blue onigiri, which has been featured on TV several times, was something I had always wanted to try. I had the opportunity to order blue demon's claw and Japanese pepper for takeout. It was delicious, but because my expectations were so high, it felt a bit disappointing. The saltiness was a bit strong, the way it was shaped was too firm, and the amount of ingredients was a little lacking considering the size of the onigiri. Thank you for the meal.

This is a specialty onigiri (rice ball) shop near Ginkaku-ji Temple. When I visited Kyoto, I was hoping to stop by if the timing was right, and luckily, I happened to be in the area around 11 am, so I decided to check out the shop. Upon entering, I was greeted by a slightly intimidating (but in a funny way) gentleman who asked, "How many people?" I replied that it was just two of us and we sat at the counter seats. During lunchtime, you choose two or more onigiri from the menu displayed at the counter and can add a set with miso soup for an additional charge. There were many types of onigiri to choose from, so I had a hard time deciding, but eventually, I picked two and placed my order. Here's what I ordered: - Aooni no Tsume (spicy cod roe with spicy cod and green pepper) - Negi Mentaiko - Set B (rolled omelette, pickled radish, konjac, miso soup) for 750 yen The counter seats were full, and there were also takeout orders coming in, so the gentleman working there seemed really busy handling everything on his own. However, it seemed like there were regular customers that day, and he was interacting with them while also expressing his gratitude and apologizing for the rush. He made the onigiri one by one in the order customers entered the shop and placed them on the plate in front of us. He said, "Please enjoy while the seaweed is crispy," as he served the first onigiri. The onigiri was fluffy yet held together well, and it was delicious. The miso soup with gentle flavors of enoki mushrooms was a nice accompaniment. Just as I finished the first onigiri, the second one arrived right on time. The timing was impeccable with a constant stream of customers waiting outside, showing how popular the shop was. The onigiri for takeout was wrapped in bamboo skin, adding to the charm of the place. The handcart outside the shop used to be used by the gentleman to sell onigiri, which was quite interesting to learn. I had a very satisfying lunch with delicious onigiri and miso soup, feeling truly content. I would love to visit again when I'm in the area. The words "Everything is about timing" displayed in the shop really left an impression, showing how important timing is to them. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal!

I visited for a delivery, but I also ate *\(^o^)/* He used to be a crybaby when he was young, but now he has grown into a handsome man. He is the son of a friend from my Osaka days, and the daughter's friend of that handsome dad. His daughter has been in the hospital in Kyoto for a long time, and he has been taking time off work to accompany her. I worry if he is just eating convenience store food or something. I try to bring some snacks whenever I can. On this day, I brought 5 rice balls. I deliver them to the front of the hospital. Even though there is corona, I worry about what would happen if the young child gets infected. So we meet for a few minutes in front of the entrance. I hope she gets a little bit of energy from the snacks. If it's delicious, leave it to this auntie. Before that, I had lunch. Three rice balls and miso soup. The dashi tamagoyaki is particularly delicious, but it's sold out. Too bad. The salted rice ball has a strong saltiness and is so delicious that you wouldn't need anything else. Keema curry? That's rare, and there's a lot of curry inside. And plenty of miso paste. It's too delicious. The miso soup and dashi tamagoyaki are also very delicious. I've received them as souvenirs before, but it's my first time eating them in the restaurant. The owner used to sell rice balls from a cart in Kawaramachi in the past, and he was famous in newspapers and the media. He was a very kind and gentle person. I parked my car at a nearby coin parking lot. If the season is good, you can park near Ginkaku-ji and walk around Shishigatani. You can easily make rice balls at home, but the ones here have a different deliciousness. I think it would be appreciated as a souvenir.

From the Biwako Sosui (Philosopher's Path) branching off to the Shirakawa-Kagatani Street, there is a popular restaurant on the east side along the Shirakawa River. Located in a quiet residential area, the retro atmosphere with scarecrows and a handcart at the entrance is a unique feature. I went with a friend and ordered three items: 1) Salt Onigiri (¥140), 2) Keema Curry (¥190), and 3) Negi Miso (¥190). The hand-rolled onigiri cooked in a feather pot was slightly warm, allowing the natural flavor of the rice to shine through. There is a sign at the entrance that says "Everything is about timing," making me realize the importance of serendipitous encounters.

Visited around 2:00 PM on December 1st (Sunday). Today, I happened to see the almost ending autumn leaves and decided to stop by alone at this place that I had been curious about. Maybe because it was already late, there were no people waiting in line, but more people came after me. There was a young man running the place alone, and when I told him I wanted to eat inside, he said it would take some time. There were also customers coming to buy takeout, and he was handling everyone in order. I waited at the counter, and although I was initially told it would take 30 minutes, it was surprisingly quick. The young man was very efficient! Each person writes their order on a piece of paper and hands it over. I ordered two onigiri rice balls, a dashimaki omelette, and pickled radish set. While waiting for the dashimaki omelette, it arrived! I was surprised by how fluffy the onigiri rice balls were when they came out! A whole new texture of perfectly salted onigiri! It was delicious! Thank you for the meal!

Jodoji Temple's Onigiri Shop, named after the owner, used to display blue demon paintings and goods when it first opened. However, the atmosphere has changed a bit since then. Originally operating from a cart, the shop became well-known and eventually opened a storefront. The onigiri here is more like sushi, with perfectly balanced rice that is neither too firm nor too soft. The amount of filling is just right, and there is a wide variety of unique menu items not found in other shops. Today, I tried the Chewy Brown Rice Salt Onigiri for 200 yen, Negi Miso for 200 yen, Sour Umeboshi for 180 yen, and the B set (rolled omelette, konjac, pickled radish, miso soup) for 320 yen. It's a cozy and delicious place to eat!
