旅浪漫
In Osaka's Kitahorie, there is a temple called Wakouji. Established in 1698, it is a Jodo sect temple, and the Amida Pond within its grounds is the origin of the local place name "Amida Pond". Right next to Wakouji is a vintage art cafe called Horie Sabo. I visited this cafe which I had been curious about for a while. It was my first review as there were no reviews yet. When I opened the glass door with the large golden letters "Horie Sabo", I was surprised to see the small interior filled with vintage art and antiques. There are 7 counter seats and 3 table seats in this smoking-permitted cafe. The owner was engrossed in conversation with regular customers and didn't even notice me coming in (laughs). I sat at a table in the back and ordered the morning set. I chose lemon tea as always. The morning set is only one type, available from 8 am to 11 am. It includes coffee or black tea, toast with fried egg, priced at 400 yen for hot and 450 yen for iced. "Wow, do you collect these as a hobby?" I asked, and she showed me pottery that her late husband made. She said it was made with Shigaraki clay. The handmade lighting of the four gods: Genbu, Suzaku, Byakko, and Seiryu, as well as the lighting of the eight trigrams: Tatsu, Ushi-Tora, Hitsuji-Saru, and Inui, were also made by her husband as a hobby. They were all of professional quality. She also displayed tiles from Todaiji Temple in Nara and a taxi meter from a local company called Nibyo Keiki. A teacup with printed initials and a hot sandwich were served. Wait, a hot sandwich? Wasn't the morning set supposed to be toast and fried egg? (laughs) She must have a fuzzy memory (laughs). I actually preferred the hot sandwich. The owner, Hisa-san, is 80 years old, born in Showa 9 (1934)! She is very energetic. This cafe was established in Showa 35 (1960), making it a 54-year-old long-established store! It bought a part of the temple grounds when Wakouji was burned down during the Osaka air raids. Initially, they ran a bicycle shop here, but her husband started a cafe. She laughed, saying that initially, the locals came to watch wrestling matches on TV. The hot sandwich here had a gentle, homely taste. Hisa-san invited me to come try the curry next time, but I was also interested in the "Horie Rice," which includes Italian spaghetti, ham and egg, stir-fried vegetables, and rice. I'll definitely come back again. Thank you. Stay healthy, Hisa-san.
