キレートれもん
I felt like shouting "What on earth is this!" like Yusaku Matsuda for the first time in a long time. This year, the heat has not let up since July, and it's hot both during the day and at night. I was craving something cold, so I went all the way to Shinjuku to get some herbal jelly. Herbal jelly is said to cool your body from the inside, so it's recommended for hot days. During the tapioca boom, there were Taiwanese dessert shops popping up everywhere, but now there are only a few left. Taiwan Sweet Shop is like a solid shop that emerged alongside the Taiwanese dessert shop trend, but this was my first visit. When I went, it was empty. Looking at the menu, it felt a bit pricey overall. I remember thinking that this shop's Taiwanese castella was small but much more expensive compared to other shops during the Taiwanese castella craze. Nevertheless, I stayed true to my initial intention and ordered the Yam Garden Herbal Jelly for 720 yen. Despite being so empty, there were a few staff members standing around, so maybe it gets busier at certain times. They were young, but for some reason, they were unfriendly... After paying, they handed me a buzzer machine you usually get at food courts. Was this really necessary when it's so empty? As expected, as I fumbled to put coins in my wallet, the buzzer went off. I was told, "Warm tea is complimentary" along with the product. It was a small paper cup filled with oolong tea. The eat-in area was cute and had a Taiwanese vibe! This was highly rated. Sitting down, I took a picture. At this point, the portion seemed smaller compared to the menu photo... In Japan, it's rare for the food to look different from the menu photo, but this was a bit... When I stirred it with a spoon, the amount seemed lacking! The yam balls seemed freshly boiled, still retaining some warmth. The shaved ice seemed apologetically floating. When I tasted it, the mixture of warm and cold, along with lukewarm syrup, was unbalanced. Some yam balls were clumped together, giving a sense of sloppiness, with a slimy texture and poor mouthfeel. The herbal jelly had no bitterness at all. This was the smallest portion I've had so far. The brown sugar syrup was too sweet. The only good thing was that coffee cream was served separately. I don't like coffee cream, so this was a relief. I wished it was much colder. It felt like the staff made it without much thought. For this price, it's not worth it. I don't think I'll ever go back. There are other cheaper, tastier, and more generous portioned shops out there. I was very disappointed.
