夜として飲まざるはなし
When you stumble upon a restaurant while traveling without doing any prior research and it turns out to be a hit, it's especially satisfying. I recently had such an encounter. I was drawn to something as I passed by and after a quick glance at the menu outside, I decided to step in. The interior was long and narrow, with a counter that could seat eight people and several small tables for two. The decor gave off a stylish cafe-turned-French vibe, with a calming wooden color scheme. However, the large dishes lined up on the counter were reminiscent of home-cooked dishes and sake accompaniments. This contrast was appealing. The drink menu featured a variety of shochu starting from around 400 yen. Not being a shochu fan, I started with a beer. A Kirin draft in medium size for 450 yen was reasonably priced. And look, they had Heartland too (500 yen for a small bottle), how delightful. I ordered that. The appetizers included fish bone senbei, iridori, and edamame, elegantly presented in delicate dishes. At this point, I was already feeling good about my choice. The food selection was surprisingly extensive for such a small place. A sashimi assortment for 600 yen, and tofu with toppings starting from 300 yen. Also, a tempting array of daily recommendations to choose from. I opted for two small dishes (200 yen each), watercress ohitashi and burdock with yellowtail. Not only the contents but also the presentation of the dishes was visually appealing. Behind the counter, a man and a woman who seemed to be the owners efficiently took orders and served customers. They worked quickly. What should I have next? Oh, there's a seasonal wild herb tempura for 450 yen. Fuki no tou, yomogi, taranome... I ordered it, and it was crispy and delicious. For an additional drink, I chose a hot cup of Gekkeikan. The sake cup and the pitcher were not the usual white porcelain with "Gekkeikan" printed on them, but a blackish ceramic set. It had a rustic charm. The food and drinks weren't exceptional, but at these prices, if they can make eating and drinking so enjoyable, there's nothing to complain about. I'll definitely make a return visit on my next business trip to Kansai.
