Fukusaya is famous as a long-established castella (sponge cake) shop, considered the originator of Nagasaki castella. Established in 1624. They have trademarked "Castella Honke" (Castella Headquarters). In the Meiji era, the 12th generation, Seitaro, created the "Gosan-yaki Castella" by increasing the amount of eggs and sugar, and reducing the amount of flour. I compared the delicious castella from Fukusaya, Bunmeido, and Karasumi-an, and in my opinion, "Fukusaya is the best for castella." Fukusaya's Gosan-yaki was by far the best, followed by Fukusaya's regular castella. When comparing within Fukusaya, the Gosan-yaki is smaller, moister, and richer. This time, I purchased it at the store in Daimaru Tokyo. The 2-piece set of Gosan-yaki castella costs 5,832 yen. It is rich, heavy, and fragrant. The bottom part has a lot of caramelization, and the color varies depending on the baking. I did take a photo of the cakes arranged upside down to show the bottom part clearly, but unfortunately, it disappeared from my PC. (Tears)

I had some business in Tokyo and after finishing work, I wandered around Daimaru looking for souvenirs when I stumbled upon Fukusaya, a place I used to eat at a lot in the past! I remember receiving their castella as souvenirs since I was a child! When I eat Fukusaya's castella, it brings back nostalgic feelings for me. My whole family loves castella. I especially love the contrast between the crunchy texture of the Zaramé sugar and the moist cake. Castella is synonymous with Fukusaya for me. I particularly enjoy the lingering texture of the Zaramé sugar at the bottom. The fluffy, firm cake can be enjoyed, and the gentle sweetness and crunchy texture of the Zaramé sugar at the end is a taste that cannot be experienced in other castella. It goes perfectly with black tea, coffee, or as a snack with tea, and its light texture allows you to eat as many pieces as you want. Eating castella while reminiscing about the past is the best! I definitely want to go back and buy more!

I wanted to bring something back, so I wandered around the depachika (food basement). There, I noticed the classic Fukusaya. This time, I brought back a 0.6 size castella for 1188 yen. The size was just right. I enjoyed it at home with a delicious cup of coffee. The unique feature of this castella is that it is pre-cut. Cutting castella can be a hassle and sometimes affects the taste, so having it pre-cut was very convenient. The packaging was also sturdy to prevent it from drying out. When I tasted it, I could feel the egg flavor, the sweetness of sugar, and the perfect baking. Everything was consistently delicious. Thank you for the meal.

"Specialty Go-San-Yaki Castella 2-piece set" (5,832 yen) The texture of the dough is moist and the flavor spreads in your mouth. The Go-San-Yaki has a rich taste and is delicious. Once you try this, you won't be able to go back to regular castella ^^; I will definitely come back. Thank you for the meal.

When I asked for recommendations on the best castella in Nagasaki, the most popular choice was the castella from Fukusaya with a bat mark. After trying it once, I fell in love with it. Since then, Fukusaya's castella has become my favorite. The traditional coarse sugar coating, fine texture, and moistness make it delicious. I couldn't resist and ended up eating a whole one by myself. It was something I always wanted to try.

On the first floor of Daimaru at Tokyo Station, you'll find famous shops from all over Japan. They have Sendai's zunda shake, Kagoshima's sweet potato treats, and even Nagasaki sweets! One of the highlights is Fukusaya's castella cake, known for its rich flavor and texture. I bought a premium "Gosan-yaki Castella" made by Nagasaki artisans this time. It's made with more eggs and sugar and less flour compared to regular castella, requiring skilled craftsmanship. It's a bit pricey at 2916 yen for a whole cake, but the quality is evident in its rich yellow color and ample caramelization. The texture is chewy and different from regular castella, which might appeal to some but not to everyone. I, being more of a commoner, found it a bit too much. But for those who enjoy this kind of texture, Fukusaya's castella is definitely worth a try. I haven't tried their Dutch cake yet, but I'm curious to give it a go in the future. Maybe if I win the lottery, I'll visit their main store in Nagasaki to buy some more.

I received a snack as a wedding favor at a friend's wedding that was postponed for a year due to COVID. My family and I enjoyed the snacks while reminiscing about old memories. It was convenient and delicious, perfect for distributing individually at events like weddings.
