After a long time, I visited Shibuya. I came for work, but it got canceled suddenly. Let's enjoy a little. There is an international volleyball match at Yoyogi National Gymnasium today. I'll watch just the first match. It's not a Japan game, so it's not crowded. I enjoyed myself. Afterwards, I decided to have a meal at the Shibuya Seibu basement. There is no particular reason, but I've never been inside Shibuya Seibu before. I went down to the second basement floor. There are various shops. Curry, galette. It feels different from where I live. Oh, a specialty shop for fish & chips? And it's certified by the association! Amazing! I decided to go here! The menu outside shows fish & chips for 1800 yen, a bit on the expensive side, but it's okay once in a while. Let's experience the feeling of being overseas while in Japan. I entered the shop around 11:30 am. There was one group of customers ahead of me. The service was by a foreign woman. I was seated at a table. Since it's Saturday, there is no lunch menu. I had no problem as I only wanted fish & chips. Fish & chips for 1800 yen. Sauce: mushy peas. Bottle of beer (London Pride) for 1000 yen. Vegetable salad for 1000 yen. It's a bit pricey for lunch, but it's a sudden day off. I want to enjoy it. The shop is clean. The foreign woman is friendly. The recommended sauce is mushy peas. It seems to be traditional. I started with the beer. Bottled beer seems to be the main choice. I wish there were more British beers, but it's fine for daytime. The cup is cold. The beer is delicious. Great! Drinking beer during the day feels guilty, but it enhances the taste. After a short wait, the salad arrived. It's enough for two people, but I'm hungry, so I ate it all at once. The dressing is Caesar. Delicious. And finally, the main dish of fish & chips. They use ketchup and malt vinegar. Ketchup is for the chips. When I was a child, I used to think that fries should be salty, but after many overseas trips, I'm starting to like ketchup. Heinz goes well with fries. Next is the fish. It's quite big. It's a white fish with little fat, so when fried, it has a nice flavor. When I put the recommended malt vinegar on it, it adds just the right amount of acidity, making it enjoyable to eat without getting tired of it. When I ordered, I thought the portion might not be enough, but I ended up quite full. Hmm. It was delicious. Actually, about 15 years ago, I went to London for work. I remember that the taste of beer stood out more than fish & chips. Eating fish & chips again, it tastes delicious. It's a simple dish with simple seasoning, but you can eat it without getting tired until the end. That's the feeling. I would like to try it again when I come back to Shibuya. Thank you for the meal!

I went to a shop in Ginza called "Rinkyu," but it was closed. I returned to Shibuya and went to another shop called "Rinkyu," but it was also closed. Since individual stores are risky, I thought that as long as the entrance was open, the shop would be open as well, so I went to Seibu Shibuya. I visited a fish and chips specialty shop on the B2 floor of A building. I had always been curious about the Roppongi store whenever I passed by. They offer lunch on weekdays, but only regular menu items on weekends and holidays. When I asked, a Southeast Asian staff member who was not fluent in Japanese lazily responded with simple phrases. I ordered the Special Regular Fish (1700 yen) with mashed peas sauce. The service wasn't great, and when asked if I wanted ketchup, I declined. The staff member disappeared into the kitchen and started shouting something in the back. The food was served after about 10 minutes. The crispy white fish was over 2cm thick. There was vinegar on the table, giving it an authentic touch. The food was lightly seasoned, which felt authentic. I struggled to get salt out of the bottle, and when I finally opened it, a clump of salt came out. There was also something salty and bean-like inside. The male staff member who appeared later at the checkout spoke fluent Japanese, so the girl who served me earlier might have been a temporary staff member on the floor. However, the service for a lunch costing around 2000 yen was disappointing.

Visited the cafe at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. It was another hot day, so I decided to get an iced cafe latte. However, I was informed that I couldn't order drinks alone, so I ended up ordering the Fish and Chips when I saw a large tapestry on the wall featuring it. It was a bit pricey at 1700 yen, but when it arrived, I was surprised by the generous portion. It was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and the tartar sauce that came with it was delicious. I also enjoyed my cafe latte. Overall, it was a good meal, although I wished there was bread or something to go with it. The menu didn't seem to have any bread options, which was a bit disappointing. The total cost was 2350 yen, including the Fish and Chips for 1700 yen and the cafe latte for 650 yen. I was able to pay with a card (Suica was not accepted).

I visited for lunch on a regular day. The restaurant is located in the basement of SEIBU Shibuya store, which was the leading department store in Tokyo during President Kiyoshi Tsutsumi's time. It is a quiet atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle outside. I was the only customer throughout my visit. I had the fish and chips with a drink as part of the lunch set. I chose tartar sauce. Adding malt vinegar to it while eating made me feel like I was in London, not Shibuya. As it is officially approved by the UK, the taste, appearance, and portion of the dish were all authentic. It's a dish that seems common but is not easy to come by, so I felt very happy during this lunch. I hope this restaurant, along with SEIBU Shibuya store, will continue to thrive.

Category: [Tokyo] Western Food ☆ Shibuya Lunch Established in 1913, the "British International Fish and Chips Association" is Asia's first officially certified establishment. It is a must-try experience to eat Fish & Chips without alcohol. FISH&CHIPS Malins Seibu Shibuya Store is the first store to receive this certification. The original Fish and Chips shop opened by Joseph Malin in 1860 is said to be the origin of this dish. While there are now shops called "chippies" all over the UK, I cannot verify this as I have not been there. Lunch B - Finger Fish (3 pieces) & Chips & Soft Drink for 1500 yen. The thick French fries made from raw British potatoes and the Finger Fish with a fluffy and crispy batter. Served with soft malt vinegar and tartar sauce. Both are very delicious. However, it is a fact that despite being around for over 150 years, this dish has seen very little evolution. Here is a piece of advice from the "British International Fish and Chips Association": Perhaps renaming it to "British International Fish and Chips and Hanamaru Association" and adding variations and volume to the products could bring it closer to perfection. I hope this idea will be taken into consideration.

Shibuya Seibu's basement. It used to be a different restaurant before, maybe Azabu Tea Room or something. I found it interesting because it had completely changed into a new store, so I decided to try it out. The seating was like a casual booth setup, not too spacious but similar to a regular department store tenant. The menu consisted of Fish & Chips and various other a la carte items. They also had desserts. The drink selection was a bit unique, resembling a traditional Fish & Chips shop. As for the food, when you order Fish & Chips in Japan, you usually get small pre-cut pieces that have already been deboned during the procurement process. However, this restaurant was different, serving a large piece of fish that was deep-fried. There was a photo of the chef holding a fish next to the register, and they even had a special menu called Tsukiji Special, indicating that the chef probably sources and prepares the fish themselves. The fish was wrapped in a crispy batter and the taste was impressive. I'm not sure how someone without a connection to Fish & Chips would feel about it, but for someone like me who had only tried it at department store fairs, this authentic British-style dish was a rare find and I would love to come back if possible.

I used it for lunch. You can enjoy traditional British fish and chips. The coating was crispy. The beer was craft beer.

Fish & Chips (Regular) is one of the main menu items. As the name suggests, it is a combination of fried fish and French fries. They offer an adaptation of the authentic dish to suit the taste of Japanese people. The fish fry has a crispy coating as usual, but it seems that the type of fish used has changed, as this time it consisted of three slender fish fries instead of the traditional large fish fry.
