After work, I was driving home thinking about where to stop for dinner and craving ramen. It was already around midnight, and it was Sunday night, so there weren't many options near my home. I was considering going to Ichiran or Gankomon Ramen, but then I looked it up on Tabelog and a nearby restaurant popped up. It was a place I had noticed before but never visited because of mixed reviews. However, it was a rare restaurant open at this late hour on a Sunday night, and since I had never been there before, I decided to have dinner there tonight.
As of August 17, past midnight, there were 2 customers ahead of me and 1 after me. It was my first visit, and I was dining alone. The restaurant is a chain called Hakata Kinryu, mainly serving ramen from Kyushu to the Chugoku region. Before moving to Kitakyushu, I had never heard of this chain. When I entered the restaurant, I was surprised by the extensive collection of manga! I love manga, so I was excited to see the shelves filled with them. I couldn't find any manga that I liked, but I decided to order before looking further.
I noticed a weekday limited dinner set menu featuring Onomichi Ramen and fried rice, and it caught my eye. I had heard of Onomichi Ramen but had never tried it. Since it was a set with fried rice, I thought it would be a good choice. However, it was labeled as "weekday limited," and today was Sunday. I decided to try my luck and asked the staff if I could order the Onomichi Ramen and fried rice set, even though it was Sunday. Surprisingly, they accepted my order without any issues. I also added some dumplings because I was quite hungry after a busy day.
While waiting for my order, I browsed through the manga shelves again, but couldn't find anything that interested me. Just then, my Onomichi Ramen, fried rice, and dumplings were served, so I returned to my seat to enjoy my meal. The Onomichi Ramen was extremely salty, with a strong taste of seasoning. The soup seemed like it was made from a commercial mix, and the bamboo shoots were like canned bamboo shoots, which made me chuckle. The fried rice seemed to be reheated frozen fried rice, with a simple flavor of rice and salt, and only had egg, green onions, and what seemed like "scrap meat," finely chopped fatty meat that was hard to identify. The Kinryu dumplings had a crispy skin and were well cooked, but lacked any homemade feel. They were decently tasty but didn't surpass the level of frozen dumplings.
Despite my complaints, I quickly finished my meal because I was so hungry. The total cost, including a 10% late-night surcharge, was 1300 yen, which was reasonable considering the quantity. If you want to read a lot of manga, have a wide selection of dishes, and get full on ramen at a low price, this place is good for that situation. It was salty but not inedible, so it's understandable why they can expand as a chain. Personally, I don't think I will revisit, but maybe one day during a long holiday, I'll go to Onomichi to try the authentic Onomichi Ramen. Thank you for the meal.
