October 26th. A hungover Saturday. I rode my bicycle around Minami-Semba in search of lunch, but couldn't find any appealing restaurants. So, I headed back towards Matsuyamachi. Along the way, I spotted a new udon restaurant. It seemed to have recently opened. It was located next to the chain restaurant TsuruMaru, making it a rare sight to see two udon restaurants side by side. I decided to stop by Noekaki-an. Despite being a personal business, they had a menu item called "Tokusei Udon," which made me wonder if they were affiliated with a chain. The menu featured various types of udon such as kombu, wakame, tsukimi, kitsune, bukkake, vegetable tempura, and thin noodles. For meat lovers, they had options like meat kitsune, meat tempura, and meat explosion. The "Tokusei" label was also present on curry udon, tempura curry udon, and meat explosion curry. They offered rice bowls with tonkatsu, oyakodon, and others. The menu was quite extensive. The interior was clean and modern, and I decided to give it a try. I purchased my meal ticket from the machine, feeling like having curry udon. I also ordered a side of egg over rice and chikuwa tempura. There were two groups of customers ahead of me, and I took a seat at the counter. The walls were adorned with various paintings, adding a rich and colorful touch to the place. The background music was Showa-era songs, not quite the typical atmosphere for enjoying udon. It gave me a strange sense of discomfort, which slightly dampened my appetite. Nevertheless, I focused on the curry udon set that arrived. The curry udon looked hearty and rich. It came with rice, raw egg, and pickled daikon on the side. The curry broth was thick and creamy, starting off sweet and ending with a spicy kick. The udon noodles were a bit lackluster in texture but managed to soak up the curry flavor. The chikuwa tempura I ordered was small and average in taste. However, there was a generous amount of meat in the dish, which paired well with the curry broth and served as the main side dish for the rice. The egg over rice was prepared as usual, with half of the egg mixed into the curry udon. The rice was lightly seasoned with soy sauce before being topped with the egg mixture. It was a satisfying meal, and I finished it feeling full. Thank you for the meal.
