On the second day at Tomamu, after enjoying a hearty breakfast buffet to recharge our stamina, we headed to the ski slopes! The ski slopes are right in front of Tomamu The Tower, so it's very convenient to get there. The slopes were wide, not too crowded, and it seemed like the snow wasn't piled up too much, maybe because the ski season was coming to an end. Before hitting the slopes, we decided to take a ride on the Cloud 9 Gondola from the nearby Resort Center to explore the "Frost Tree Terrace". We received complimentary Cloud 9 Gondola sightseeing tickets when we checked in, so we could ride the gondola as much as we wanted during our stay. (Regular round-trip gondola fare: Adults 2,200 yen, Elementary school students 1,300 yen *Free to use with a lift ticket) The gondola had a mix of skiers and people in casual clothes. The 13-minute ride on the gondola from the base of the mountain to the top offered breathtaking views of the snow-covered mountains. Although we couldn't see the frost trees due to the warmer weather, we could still enjoy the majestic view of the Hidaka mountain range and the crisp clear air.
The slopes have various courses for beginners, intermediates, and advanced skiers, so everyone can enjoy skiing according to their skill level. The Cloud Bar, with a counter and chairs about 3 meters above ground and 13 meters in length, provided a thrilling experience. My husband and daughter were a bit scared, so I ended up sitting there alone. Climbing the ladder and sitting there, I felt a mix of fear and exhilarating openness, with the stunning mountain views. There's also the Cloud Walk observation deck, which extends from the ground, offering a panoramic view of the vast landscape. It's said to give a feeling of walking on fluffy clouds, but in reality, it felt more like a suspension bridge, making us cross it nervously without fully enjoying the view.
After exploring, we stopped by the cafe at the Frost Tree Terrace. "Cloud Cafe" is located at an altitude of 1,088m. The cozy interior was full, so we couldn't find a seat. They offer cloud-themed drinks and sweets. We decided to try the "Cloud Soft Serve @600 yen (tax included)" - a cute soft serve ice cream shaped like fluffy clouds. Despite its appearance, it had a milky and rich flavor, which we enjoyed while taking in the good weather outside. My daughter, who loves soft serve ice cream, almost finished the large portion by herself.
Back at the base of the mountain Resort Center where we returned on the gondola, there is a food court for lunch options. They offer ramen, pork bowls, curry, gelato, and more. Despite having a leisurely breakfast buffet, we weren't hungry for lunch and ended up skipping it. In the afternoon, we had booked a kids ski school for our daughter's first ski experience. She had a thorough 2-hour lesson in the beginner class with a dedicated coach. (Snow Academy)
