As always, my reviews are usually about ramen, but sometimes I review 【Hokkaido's gourmet food】. The 26th edition introduces "Shio Horumon" from Asahikawa.=================================When it comes to Asahikawa's specialty gourmet food, "Shio Horumon" is the name. Shio Horumon, which is made by grilling pork offal instead of beef, is said to have originated in Asahikawa. Hokkaido residents have always liked pork, even in sukiyaki, pork is the mainstream instead of beef, and pork minced meat is very popular at yakitori restaurants. Especially in Asahikawa, the region has been prosperous in pig farming since the Meiji era, and pork has been commonly consumed. The presence of the famous "Northern Garrison" known as the Army 7th Division played a role in this. In 1901, when the unit was stationed in Asahikawa, the city rapidly developed as a military town. The population, which was only about 3,600 people, increased rapidly to 17,000 people in just 5 years. With this, pig farming also became prosperous in Asahikawa. Pig farming played a role in supplying a large amount of food to the rapidly increasing soldiers and citizens, as well as in the disposal of leftover food. The development of pig farming led to the birth of Asahikawa ramen, made with pork bones, dried fish, and lard, and the birth of Shio Horumon, which became a specialty of Asahikawa after the war. The shop that became the trigger for the increase in the popularity of "Shio Horumon" after the war was "Sumi-ya," which opened in 1986. Now, there are branch stores in Sapporo and outside Hokkaido, and "Sumi-ya's Shio Horumon" is sold in any supermarket in Hokkaido. Currently, the store in Kotoni, Sapporo, is the main store, so I wonder if the Asahikawa store is considered the first store. Sorry for the long introduction as usual, but (^^;;, for today's dinner, I went to "Sumi-ya." The restaurant is located at 8 Jo 3, Gojo Street, Asahikawa City. Walk straight from the station towards the city hall, and cross the 4th street (national road) and turn right on the next street. The restaurant is located on the left side of the alley ahead. It's easy to find with a yellow sign that says "Sumi-ya" in black letters. I visited with three men in late April on a Sunday evening at 6 o'clock. We waited for a while but were seated in about 5 minutes. The charcoal grills were already prepared at the table. First, we ordered beer. Next, we ordered the "Mix Horumon." "Mix" is a combination of Shio Horumon (stomach) and Upper Horumon (rectum). While grilling the onion that was served as a free service (charged from the second plate), the pink and white horumon appeared♪ It's a large amount for three people. It seems that one serving is a suitable amount for two people. We grilled the horumon carefully while drinking beer. Once it had a moderate amount of char, we enjoyed it♪ The pork horumon with a salt sauce was delicious! It has a crunchy texture yet is tender to chew. While picking at the fresh horumon with a simple salt flavor and no odor, conversations flourished. We then ordered beef ribs (2 plates), raw lamb (2 plates), vegetable grill (1 plate), and more beer. We forgot to order the specialties "Pork Sagari" and "Tontoro," so that will be for next time. We finished it all in no time♪ Full and satisfied, it was delicious~(*´∀`*) Since the outbreak of the new coronavirus infection, I have become accustomed to dining alone, but eating grilled meat together with everyone is still delicious♪ The bill for three people was 7,304 yen. It's less than 2,500 yen per person and still cheap. The delicious and affordable prices are one of the charms of "Sumi-ya." I will visit the Sapporo store next time. It was delicious. Thank you♪ (Visited on April 24, 2022) (Posted on September 10, 2022)
