When I mentioned this to a friend, they recommended the "Chuo Market Dining Hall" run by "Maido Ooniki Shokudo" on the 2nd floor of the East Building South side. Excited, I rushed to the Central Wholesale Market, but I couldn't find the stairs to the 2nd floor. Lost and confused, I wandered around, feeling like a lost puppy. After 30 minutes of searching, I finally found the stairs and made my way up. Inside the dining hall, there was a long line, like a cafeteria. The daily set meal for 660 yen caught my eye, with a main dish and three side dishes (rice, miso soup, coffee, dessert included). Today's recommendation was red fish simmered. The side dishes that went with the red fish simmered were simmered hijiki, spinach ohitashi, and macaroni gratin. The food was sourced from the market itself, and the staff were kind and attentive. It was a self-service system where you could choose your side dishes from a variety of options. After some deliberation, I chose salt-grilled mackerel, simmered eggplant, tempura, and sixteen-grain rice. The food was delicious, especially the mackerel which was juicy and flavorful. The freshly made tamagoyaki was also a delight. Overall, the meal was satisfying and worth the effort of finding the dining hall.

I love small bowl vegetable tempura. It's really crunchy, so I like to dip it in tempura sauce and let it soften before eating it. I also enjoy putting vegetable tempura on top of udon noodles. Although I usually eat a lot of fish because it's delicious, I also enjoy fried chicken, so I often eat a chicken tempura rice bowl.

Adding udon to this set meal costs 940 yen, as kitsune udon is only 280 yen. The cost performance is clearly excellent. You can also add additional small dishes for 110 yen each, with options ranging from sashimi to tempura. The main dish options include freshly grilled fish (mackerel, salmon, saury, and other daily fish) or daily specials (such as fried horse mackerel or cutlets). The fish is delicious, and the taste surpasses others at this price point. I'll say it again, this is completely different from a regular Maido Ookini dining hall.

This hidden gem is located inside the Chuo Oroshiuri Ichiba (Central Wholesale Market). While it may seem intimidating to those unfamiliar with it, it is open to the general public, so if you're in the area, be sure to check it out! And all of this for just 660 yen. The portion size is incredible, isn't it? If you were to eat at the same Fujio Food cafeteria elsewhere, it could easily cost over 1,000 yen. The staircase on South 7th Street shown in the last photo is the quickest way to get there. They offer a daily changing set menu with four items, and you can get a large serving of rice for only 660 yen.
