For B-class gourmet enthusiasts, the emergence of a super affordable restaurant is a delight. In the downtown area of Tokyo, "Donmaru" is rapidly expanding its stores, and now it has opened in Ryogoku. It is located near the Midori 1-chome intersection of the Keiyo Highway, a little off the Kyosumi street towards the JR railway side. To put it simply, it's across from the tsukemen restaurant "Gonroku". It is said to have opened in October 2010, and judging by the always long lines during lunchtime since then, you can understand how attractive the taste and price must be. There are also renowned restaurants nearby, such as Gonroku, Tokisei, and Kameido Gyoza, so its prosperity despite the competition speaks to its quality and value. I visited around 3 pm on a Saturday to avoid the crowds, and there were no customers ahead of me, so my order was taken promptly and my food arrived in less than 5 minutes. There are about 40 menu items here, all priced at 525 yen, so it's hard to choose, but I ordered the popular seafood bowl. It was generously topped with various ingredients like tuna, squid, mackerel, salmon roe, scallops, and amberjack, almost overflowing with toppings. As for the taste, like in this review, opinions on the quality of the ingredients vary. The tuna-based ingredients are large and fresh, comparable to those at a sushi restaurant. However, more expensive items like sea urchin and salmon roe may not meet expectations. The other ingredients are decent, but this time the squid was tough and lacked flavor. Also, the sushi rice, probably made with cheaper rice to keep costs down, is of low quality, cooked too firm with poor texture. There seems to be room for improvement in this area. So, maybe it's best to cook your own rice at home and have this bowl as a side dish, the ultimate menu idea? Still, for 525 yen, being able to enjoy reasonably fresh seafood is hard to complain about. The affordability of this place might even steal customers from cheap beef bowl chains like Yoshinoya and Sukiya. The only thing that can compete with this affordability is discounted supermarket sashimi packs. It's a recommended spot for when you occasionally crave cheap sushi.
