No compromise on the tonkatsu path! At the tonkatsu specialty shop "Tonkatsu Fuji I," run by a French-trained owner who ensures both juicy fatty loin lovers and lean tenderloin enthusiasts leave satisfied, you'll find a selection of premium pork brands such as "Hayashi SPF," "Iwanaka Pork," "TOKYO X," "Nichinan Mochi Pork," and "Yoshisu Pork." The shop's specialty is the "Minami Nu Pork" from Ishigaki Island, which only about 500 heads are shipped annually. The shop is located a bit off the beaten path from the historic "Senbayashi Shopping Street," one of Osaka's three major shopping streets with over 100 years of history. The cozy interior exudes an adult atmosphere, with only 7 counter seats and attentive service from the staff. The lunch set menu features a variety of options, including the popular "Minced Cutlet" and "Sasami Cutlet." During my visit, I opted for the weekday lunch set, which included the daily special "Hire Cutlet 70g" and a choice between "Minced Cutlet" or "Sasami Cutlet." The cutlets were expertly fried to perfection, with a crispy coating and tender, flavorful meat. The Sasami Cutlet was surprisingly plump and crispy, while the Hire Cutlet showcased a beautiful pink color and a delicate sweetness. Each bite was bursting with umami and juices, without any unpleasant odors or greasiness. The sides of cabbage, dressing, miso soup, and rice were all of exceptional quality, making for a truly satisfying meal. To finish, a refreshing mint herbal tea was served, cleansing the palate. The owner and his wife were welcoming and passionate about their craft, creating a warm and inviting dining experience. "Tonkatsu Fuji I" may have only opened in September 2022, but it has quickly become a popular spot for tonkatsu enthusiasts. Reservations are recommended, and can easily be made through the shop's Instagram DM or official LINE account. Overall, a wonderful dining experience at "Tonkatsu Fuji I" - highly recommended!
