There are so many homework restaurants that I haven't been able to visit at all, but among them, there was a shop I've been wanting to visit for a while but just couldn't seem to make it - Uchida Ramen in Chikushino City along Prefectural Route 112. I've actually tried to visit multiple times in the past, but somehow ended up going on a Tuesday when Monday was a holiday and the shop was closed, or arrived too late and they had run out of soup, or forgot that they close early on weekends and holidays. Looking back, I've probably tried to visit the shop about 5 times, but for some reason, the timing just never worked out. However, the other day, I happened to have a real estate job in Chikushino City and had some time to grab a bowl of ramen on my way back. So, I finally made it to Uchida Ramen.
Uchida Ramen is a pork bone ramen shop that boasts of Kyushu-style ramen, known for its varied menu and generous portions. It is a popular shop located along a busy road with a parking lot, and offers counter seats, table seats, and even tatami mat seating, catering to both solo diners and families. The shop operates from 11:00 to 19:00 on weekdays, and from 11:00 to 17:00 on weekends and holidays, without a break in between. It was established in 1965 as "Koeiken" in Takamiya, and the founder, Mr. Uchida Kunitoshi, who was originally a carpentry apprentice, decided to open a ramen shop after being recommended by a relative who was in the soy sauce wholesale business in Kurume. Two people who came to teach him how to make ramen were Mr. Sugino Katsumi, who was the first to introduce cloudy pork bone ramen in Kurume, and Mr. Yotsukoro Hidemitsu, who took over "San-Kyu" created by Mr. Sugino and spread cloudy pork bone ramen to Kumamoto, Saga, and Kitakyushu. Mr. Sugino later opened a shop called "RaiRaiKen" in Kitakyushu City, where his son continues to operate as the original cloudy pork bone ramen shop. Both of them apparently did not reveal the real secrets of making ramen, and Mr. Uchida learned and developed his own unique taste over time.
The shop was thriving in Fukuoka at the time, claiming to serve Kurume-style ramen, but due to the high number of delivery orders, they decided to focus on in-store sales only and considered relocating. After 25 years, they moved to Naka River, where they changed the shop name to "Uchida Ramen" in honor of Mr. Uchida Kunitoshi. After operating for 24 years in Naka River City, they moved to Chikushino City in July 2015 due to the inability to secure a parking lot, where they continue to operate today. Interestingly, they switched to homemade noodles from about 20 years after the establishment in Takamiya, using slightly thicker noodles typical of Kurume style.
When I visited, it was past 3:00 pm, but the shop was still open as they do not have a break in the afternoon. I parked my car in the parking lot and walked to the front of the shop. The shop is located along Prefectural Route 112, a little further east from Yume Town Chikushino store, and past the Sukiya Chikushino Nagao store on the same side. The parking lot is a bit irregular, but there are about 11 spaces, and there is also a covered bicycle parking lot on the roadside. Inside the shop, there is a ticket machine on the left as you enter, with three 4-person table seats in the back, a 2-person table seat and a 4-person table seat on the right, and a 4-person zashiki table at the very back.
