This area is a battleground for kushikatsu restaurants. Many places have multiple locations, but this spot offers the old-school Nishinari taste. They close at 2 pm for lunch. The octopus Karaage sells out quickly, so be sure to order it.

All the food I ate was delicious! Especially the skewers at this restaurant were as fluffy as they are reputed to be, with a gentle mouthfeel and a crispy surface, a type of skewer I had never tasted before. The other skewers were also very tasty and had generous portions. By the way, I waited in line for 40 minutes.

Three groups waiting. It's scorching hot with no shade in the middle of summer, so a parasol is a must. I prefer the fluffy type of kushikatsu over the crispy one, so I came here, but the other members are fans of the crispy type. There's plenty of sauce and cabbage for you, with a limit of two refills. Glad that the pandemic is over. You can taste the deep side of Osaka here. The landlady's personality is heartwarming.

For lunch at Shin-Imamiya, following udon, I tried out a new place called Omiya for kushikatsu. As someone who has always been going to Yaesho & Tengu, it was a rare opportunity for me to explore a new place. Omiya is known for its secret batter that creates a crispy and fluffy texture in their kushikatsu. I arrived at 1:30 PM and there was only one group waiting ahead of me. The waiting system involved standing behind a chain pole located just 5 meters across the street from the restaurant. Despite it being a public road, no one seemed to mind. When the previous customer entered, I was left waiting alone. A young female staff member from the restaurant approached me and asked, "Are you going to eat now? We close at 2 PM!" Her tone implied, "Are you really going to eat here when we close at 2 PM?" I reassured her that I would be done by 2 PM and she allowed me to enter. I ordered a small bottle of beer and a mixed kushikatsu platter. The platter included kushikatsu, chicken, pork, smelt fish, sweet potato, and egg. The tart sauce paired best with the sweet potato. The kushikatsu was indeed delicious, much better than the weird chain restaurants. The price was reasonable too. The young female staff's service may be off-putting to tourists from other regions, but the warm and friendly female owner at the cashier made up for it. She was very hospitable and it was a relief. While experiencing the overly sweet and salty service, the kushikatsu was truly enjoyable. Thank you for the meal.

This restaurant that was popular on SNS was always on my list to visit. The skewers were fluffy and you could eat as many as you wanted. The menu was full of delicious dishes that went perfectly with drinks. I couldn't help but keep sipping my drink because everything was so tasty!!!

I went to a famous kushikatsu restaurant in Shinsekai with my friend who lives in Osaka! They have both counter and table seats, and we were able to get in without waiting because they have a good turnover rate. The kushikatsu at Omiya-ya has a unique batter that sets it apart from other kushikatsu places! It's affordable and you can eat as many skewers as you want.

I had some Osaka's B-class gourmet kushikatsu at the Shinsekai "Omiya Honten" located under the Tsutenkaku Tower. I ordered kushikatsu, asparagus, and tako kara. Surprisingly, the kushikatsu prices ranged from 80 yen to 100 yen. The unique feature of "Omiya Honten" is the thick coating on the kushikatsu, giving it a taste similar to eating a corn dog. The sauce here is also the sweetest in Shinsekai. They don't have doteyaki, but instead, their specialty is the fried octopus, which I enjoyed with some salt sprinkled on top. The octopus karaage was priced at 330 yen. This place is one of the three major kushikatsu restaurants in Shinsekai (Yaesho, Daruma, Omiya).

We enjoyed our meal for 2 people at a total of 2780 yen! We had 4 skewers, 2 negima (chicken and green onion skewers), 2 shiitake mushrooms, 2 onions, 1 eggplant, 1 kisu (fish skewer), 1 sunazuri (fish skewer), 1 orange juice, and 1 cola. The batter was crispy and fluffy, very unique and delicious! The regular skewers had a perfect balance between the batter and the meat. We visited around 5 pm on a Sunday and had to wait for about 15 minutes as there were 2 groups ahead of us. It's definitely a popular spot!

The second kushikatsu indulgence in the new world was "Omoya Honten". We arrived at 13:15 just in time for the last order at 14:00. The batter was soft and fluffy, with a delightful chewiness. The sweet sauce paired perfectly with the batter. We enjoyed kushikatsu, kisu, maguro cheek meat, and shrimp. The atmosphere of the restaurant was amazing, and we couldn't resist buying some of their sauce to take home.

I arrived about 15 minutes before opening and there were already about 10 people in line. The fluffy batter was delicious♪ There was a sign saying you could only order one skewer per person, but I managed to order before they sold out. The octopus was delicious. I wish I could order more than one skewer, but even one was good. They probably sell out quickly. The shrimp and shiitake mushrooms were also delicious. I've been here a few times, and whenever I feel like eating skewers, I'll come back. I want to eat octopus again next time!

I finally got to try the fluffy beef cutlet I've been wanting, and it was delicious with a bread-like crust. The staff were very strict about checking masks before entering, which I was impressed by. I avoided the open sauce and cabbage that were always set out because they seemed a bit scary haha.

I came to Osaka, so of course I had to go to Shinsekai. I had okonomiyaki with rabbit, and for the second place I chose this kushikatsu restaurant. We arrived 5 minutes before the 4:00 PM opening time and there were already about 10 groups waiting in front of the restaurant. Luckily, we were able to get in. The restaurant had a nostalgic atmosphere with aged walls and decorations, giving it the feel of a long-established kushikatsu place. We started with a toast with bottled beer. Here's what we ordered: - Ebi Asupara (shrimp and asparagus) - Torikara (chicken) and Takokara (octopus) kushikatsu (a must-try kushikatsu) - Kaki (oyster) The kushikatsu had a fluffy coating, which was a first for me as an Osaka native. Personally, I prefer less coating, but this was still delicious. The torikara was recommended with just salt, but I couldn't resist dipping it in sauce (laughs). The oysters were surprisingly large and there were two skewered together. The takokara was a limited quantity item! It was a bit tough, so it might not be suitable for those with weak teeth. I stopped at 6 skewers because I plan to visit again. There were many other tempting options on the menu. Lastly, the lady gave us some oranges, which was heartwarming. Thank you for the meal.

In Osaka, we went on a food tour. We first had okonomiyaki in Shinsekai, and for our second stop, we visited this kushikatsu restaurant. It opened at 4 pm, and we arrived about 5 minutes early. There was already a long line of people waiting in front of the restaurant, about 10 groups. We were guided in order and didn't have to wait long to be seated. The restaurant was very narrow, and you end up pretty close to the person behind you. There was limited space under the table to store our belongings, so be careful especially in winter when you might not have a place to hang your coat. We ordered the following kushikatsu: asparagus, chicken from the thigh, and wiener sausage. We forgot to order the classic eggplant kushikatsu, but the staff recommended it to us as their specialty. The batter was thick, and I couldn't help but feel guilty about the calories. We had the chicken kushikatsu with salt seasoning, but it was a bit difficult to eat due to the bones. It was quite filling, and I couldn't finish it. Everything was delicious, but it was so oily that I felt like I might get an upset stomach. On our way out, an old lady gave us some oranges, which was heartwarming. We enjoyed them back at the hotel. Thank you for the meal!

On the third day of the Osaka food tour, the second restaurant chosen in the Shinsekai area was a place known for its deep-fried skewers. The ordered menu included a large bottle of beer, skewers of sardines, shrimp, a large asparagus, chicken skin, and octopus legs (a limited quantity item). The octopus legs were skewered without batter and were quite tough. The oysters had a very thick and fluffy batter, which may not be to everyone's taste. Personally, I prefer the thinner batter and smaller skewers found at chain restaurants like Daruma. Also, I couldn't help but worry about the hygiene of the sauce and cabbage provided. It's easy for foreigners or newcomers to accidentally double-dip. It's recommended to start with 2-3 skewers to see if it suits your preferences. As I was leaving, the lady at the restaurant gave me a mandarin orange, which was a nice gesture. Thank you! Itadakimasu!

In the new world, we decided to try some kushikatsu and visited a popular restaurant where people were lining up even before it opened. We waited in line and ordered a variety of items from the menu. We shared a bottle of beer with friends while waiting. Here are some of the items we tried: - Asparagus: A whole asparagus spear, very satisfying. - Kushikatsu: The specialty of the house. - Shrimp - Oysters: Winter limited, three oysters on a skewer, very filling! - Green peppers and okra, I think. - Smelt fish - Octopus: This octopus was very popular, we were lucky to get it as they were almost sold out by the time we ordered for the second time. The octopus had no batter on it. The kushikatsu had a thick batter, more than expected.

There are many tempura shops in the area, but only a few are lined up. I decided to try one of them, Omiya. The menu consists only of tempura, with no chopsticks or rice dishes available. There is also no place to hang your coat. However, the staff were friendly and explained the rules, such as using cabbage to dip the tempura in sauce. When I ordered the tempura, it came out with a fluffy, round coating, which seemed to be the specialty of the shop. Personally, I prefer the traditional crispy coating, but for less than 100 yen per skewer, there's nothing to complain about. The tempura pieces were large and satisfying to eat. Other than tempura, the prices range from 250-350 yen, with portions equivalent to two skewers from most other shops. Since there are no other menu options besides tempura, it's best to enjoy a quick meal here and move on to your next destination.

My favorite kushikatsu shop in Shinsekai where I did a kushikatsu food tour! Shinsekai, where Tsutenkaku Tower is located, is famous for kushikatsu. On this day, I visited 5 kushikatsu shops (Daruma, Tengu, Yaesho, Omiya, and Seiryuken) and the most unique and favorite kushikatsu shop was Seiryuken. The shop is located a 4-minute walk from Ebisucho Station. It is also accessible in about 6-7 minutes from Dobutsuen-mae and Shin-Imamiya. It is a popular shop where you can enjoy kushikatsu while feeling the atmosphere of Osaka's downtown near Shinsekai. With 41 seats, including counter seats, it is easy to stop by even if you are alone. The unique feature of the kushikatsu at this shop is the fluffy texture of the batter. While many kushikatsu shops have a crispy texture, using yam in the batter creates a new texture for the kushikatsu. The popular menu is the "Honke Kushikatsu" priced at 90 yen, which is very reasonable. The sauce is a thick, sweet and savory type, and double dipping is strictly prohibited. If you want extra sauce, there is free cabbage on the table for you to use. In addition to meat and vegetable dishes, they also offer seafood such as eel, oysters, and shrimp, allowing you to enjoy the new texture of kushikatsu with various ingredients. This is a must-visit famous shop when you visit Shinsekai. [Order] - Honke Kushikatsu 90 yen - Eel 310 yen - Oyster 350 yen - Shrimp 310 yen

There are many tempura restaurants in the area, but this one was really good. The crispy batter might be a hit or miss for some people, but I personally liked it. The prices were reasonable and the service was quick, so the turnover of customers was fast. The eel, oysters, scallops, asparagus, and octopus were all delicious.

A skewer cutlet restaurant near Tsutenkaku. Keep it simple with the assumption of skewer cutlet hopping. The skewer cutlets have a fluffy coating similar to an American dog. They also have sauce in a can container! (The Daruma in Shin-Osaka was gone.) The fluffy coating is delicious, but I also want to try the crispy coating. Definitely planning on hopping around the skewer cutlet restaurants.
