It was a holiday, so I was walking from Tenjin towards Hakata Station. It was evening, and I wasn't particularly hungry, so I was planning to go straight home. However, a sign caught my eye as I passed Tenjin-Minami Station. It seemed to be a curry udon restaurant. There was a large sign with a description of the curry udon written near the second floor. It said, "Natural chicken broth and 4 types of Japanese broth fused with 11 types of curry spices." I usually walk along this street, but I had never noticed it before. It seemed like a new restaurant that opened about two months ago. I don't usually eat curry udon, but I was curious, so I approached the entrance of the restaurant to read about the curry udon. I decided to search on Tabelog to see the reviews, but as soon as I took out my smartphone, I was approached by a staff member outside who called out to me. They kindly explained about the curry udon, so I decided to trust my gut and go in without checking the reviews on Tabelog in front of the staff member. I was guided upstairs by the staff. I arrived at the restaurant around 5:55 PM. It was a relatively small and clean interior with counter seats and table seats. There were no customers inside. The person who called out to me at the entrance seemed to be the owner of the restaurant. I sat at an empty table seat and ordered the specialty curry udon. It was brought to me in about 5 minutes. It had a quite unique appearance compared to regular curry udon. I was told to adjust the spiciness with the shichimi togarashi provided on the table, but I decided to try it as it was. I took a sip of the soup of the specialty curry udon. It was quite delicious. The curry soup was mild and had a thick, creamy consistency. It wasn't spicy at all. The umami of the chicken and Japanese broth blended perfectly. It seemed they also paid attention to the curry powder, using a creamy curry powder made by a long-established dried goods store specifically for curry udon. It was a mysterious curry soup that I had never tasted before. The udon was relatively thick and angular, with a slightly less chewy texture. It had a chewy texture and was delicious. I thought it wasn't as soft as Fukuoka udon. I had a feeling it was similar to Sanuki udon that I had eaten in Shikoku before, and when I later checked, it was indeed Sanuki udon. The ingredients included chicken, fish cake, fried tofu, chopped green onions, and more. The chicken was tender. It went well with the curry udon here. While eating, I noticed a menu on the wall that caught my eye. It was called "Oimeshi" (additional rice). I confirmed with the owner, and as I expected, it was something you eat by adding it to the curry soup after finishing the udon. I ordered an additional 100g of Oimeshi. I wanted to get 200g, but I had already drunk quite a bit of the curry soup by that point. It was brought to me right away. I mixed it into the curry soup, and it turned into something like risotto. I took a bite. It was delicious. The curry soup in this restaurant goes well with rice too. The Japanese broth seemed to be doing a great job. I was engrossed in eating and finished it in no time. Before paying, I took the dishes to the return counter myself. It might be unusual in Fukuoka, but it's a common sight in Sanuki udon restaurants. It was a big hit for a spontaneous visit. The udon was Sanuki udon, which I love. It was completely different from the curry udon I had eaten before. This restaurant's original dish is one-of-a-kind that you can't find in other restaurants. Although there is a large sign outside, the entrance of the restaurant is not very noticeable, so I felt like they might be missing out. When I later checked the reviews on Tabelog, there were fewer reviews than I expected, but there were many reviewers giving high ratings. I think I will visit again. I found a good restaurant. There were other creative udon dishes available, but next time, I want to try the curry udon with 200g of Oimeshi. The total cost this time was 900 yen. It's a reasonable price for a restaurant in the middle of Fukuoka. It was delicious. I will come again.
