1. What is "Kantaro"?
Kantaro opened in 1998 in Hakodate, Ugaura. The current main store is the first store. As of October 2022, according to Tabelog, there are 23 Kantaro stores nationwide, mainly in Hokkaido, Tohoku, and also in Tokyo, Chiba, and Osaka. The Tokyo branches of Kantaro are located in Tokyo Station's Ichibangai. Especially, the "Tachigui Sushi Kantaro Tokyo Station Ichibangai Store" caught my attention as it is on the way to Ramen Street. When I visited Hakodate last year, I also planned to visit the local store, but I couldn't make it. So, on this trip, which marks my second consecutive visit to Hakodate, I made sure to visit Kantaro, the Goryokaku Park store.
2. View of Goryokaku from Goryokaku Tower
Last year, I visited Goryokaku Park, but Goryokaku Tower was closed, so I couldn't see Goryokaku from a high place. This time, I managed to take photos. Initially, I was impressed by the view from the high place, but I wished I could take more clear photos to show the pentagon shape. It seemed that Goryokaku Tower was not very suitable for photography. Strange.
3. Gourmet Conveyor Belt Sushi at Kantaro Goryokaku Park Store
After a year, I returned to Goryokaku Tower. Last time, I had the famous salt ramen at "Ajisai" main store in Hakodate. The store was almost empty back then, but this time, there was a long line. It seems to be normal. Not only Ajisai but everywhere was crowded this time. As for the Kantaro Goryokaku Park store that I aimed for, it was about 700m away from Goryokaku Tower. After about 10 minutes of walking, I arrived. There is a spacious parking lot, and most customers seemed to come by car. The exterior of the Gourmet Conveyor Belt Sushi Kantaro Goryokaku Park store looks like a regular sushi restaurant, with a rotating lane in front that was not moving. There is a hot water server for making tea, and except for the ordering method, it's a normal sushi restaurant where the chef makes the sushi. I hadn't decided what to eat, but I was interested in the Goryokaku store-limited set. The No. 1 special sushi set of 6 pieces costs 1,980 yen. Uni, red meat, raw herring, raw salmon, raw tuna minced scallion sushi, and scallop. I decided to go with this.
4. Sapporo Classic Draft Beer and Selected Sushi (6 pieces) at Gourmet Conveyor Belt Sushi Kantaro Goryokaku Park Store
Sapporo Classic has become a staple of this trip. It's delicious wherever you drink it, but it was exceptional here. The foam texture was excellent. I ordered the special sushi set of 6 pieces and Sapporo Classic draft beer from the touch panel. I was served miso soup and chawanmushi first, followed by the special sushi set. The miso soup with grated kelp was very Hokkaido-like. The chawanmushi had a rich broth with ingredients like shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, chestnuts, and fish cake. And then, the special sushi set. I started with uni. It wasn't labeled as "raw uni," so I was a little worried, but it was delicious without any issues.
