Located in Kitakyushu City, "Izakaya Shunka Fuyu" is home to the thickest Katsudon in Japan, known as "Donkatsu." The Katsudon is 7cm thick and weighs 650g, with a total weight of over 1kg including the rice! The meat is slowly cooked for about 10 hours using low-temperature cooking, resulting in a tender pork loin with a fantastic texture. The sweet sauce complements the dish perfectly, making it a truly satisfying meal. Reservations are required in advance for this dish. The restaurant, established 33 years ago, has been beloved by customers for 23 years. This is Akina, an izakaya located about a 15-minute walk from Orio Station in Yahatanishi-ku, Kitakyushu City. The name is written as 春夏冬 (shunkafuyu) but pronounced as Akina, which is a play on words because it doesn't include the character for autumn. It has become quite popular after being featured on TV and being Instagrammable. One of their specialties is a Dekamori Katsudon, a large serving of katsudon with a 7cm thick pork cutlet, weighing 600 grams, served with rice, egg, and broth, totaling 1.3 kilograms. It is both visually impressive and satisfying to eat! They also offer a variety of other izakaya dishes. The restaurant has 8 counter seats and 8 tatami seats, accommodating around 40 people. I tried the Dekamori Katsudon challenge here and successfully finished the 1.3-kilogram meal. The video of this challenge will be posted on my YouTube channel, "Chuushoku Non," soon. Visited the restaurant after 8 years with a friend. The dashimaki tamago was especially delicious! There are so many menu options, so I want to come back again. The shochu highball was tasty with freshly squeezed juice. The plum wine is homemade. The restaurant has a simple appearance, but the food and drinks are carefully prepared. My friend even said they want to come back in a couple of days!笑.

I had heard that the izakaya "Shunka Fuyu" had a reputation for delicious food, and even though it is within walking distance from my home, this was my first time visiting. When I called to make a reservation, the tatami rooms were already full, so we managed to secure seats at the counter. The first dish, tairagi sashimi with ponzu sauce and grated daikon, was delicious with a nice saltiness. The crispy fried garlic was fragrant, and the octopus karaage had a firm texture. The "tofu jon" with spicy miso sauce was a Korean-style tofu teppanyaki. The fresh spring rolls had a kick of gochujang. The negi tamago yaki was similar to okonomiyaki but with a fluffy and moist texture. It was unexpectedly tasty with green onions and a gochujang-based sauce layered inside. I love drinking alcohol, and on weekends when I don't have work the next day, I enjoy drinking without any worries. I usually think that drinking at home is the best, but going out at night for a change of taste, atmosphere, and lively conversation with my wife can be enjoyable too.
