On a certain Sunday in May, I took a beginner in day drinking to the tourist spot in Osaka called "Shinsekai". When you think of Shinsekai, you think of "JanJan Yokocho", right? This time, I chose the popular sushi restaurant "Sakanae Sushi" for our day drinking spot. There are two branches of Sakanae Sushi in JanJan Yokocho, and we visited the "branch" this time. The branch is located right at the entrance of JanJan Yokocho from the side of Tsutenkaku, while the main store is located on the opposite side of the entrance. The interior of the restaurant is long and narrow, with only 12 seats at the L-shaped counter facing the cutting board. The atmosphere has a nostalgic downtown feel, which is quite charming. We arrived around 12:30 and the place was already full, showing its popularity.
We started with some draft beer, which tasted great on a Sunday afternoon. We also had some sake (Kenbishi) with our meal. For food, we ordered a sashimi platter with flounder, squid, whelk, tuna, and yellowtail. The squid, tuna, and yellowtail were delicious, but the flounder was a bit rough in texture. We also tried the famous "Anone Maki" and "Anone Neta Maki", which were flavorful and perfect for pairing with sake. We also had simmered alfonsino, sardine sashimi, ark shell sashimi, nigiri sushi, and more. The meal was satisfying and the bill for two people was reasonable.
Overall, Sakanae Sushi is a good choice for casual dining in Shinsekai. The chef's hospitality and attention to detail added to the experience. We left feeling full and content.
