Mikazukiya is a famous croissant specialty shop known for its natural yeast croissants. The main store of Mikazukiya, which is well-known as a souvenir at JR Hakata Station, JR Kokura Station, Fukuoka Airport, Kitakyushu Airport, and Kokura Izutsuya, is located in the Coal Building. You can reach the shop by car (with parking available) or by walking from JR Wakamatsu Station. As for me, coming from Tobata, I enjoy the seaside location while looking up at the Wakato-Ohashi Bridge by taking the Kitakyushu City Ferry. On this day, I purchased a croissant assortment for gifts. Unlike frozen croissants at airports, here you can get freshly baked croissants, and if they're not sold out, you can get all varieties. I bought two sets of 12 croissants in a gift box, mixing flavors like purple sweet potato, plain, maple, black tea, chocolate, cinnamon, red bean, mugwort, soybean flour, and cocoa. I also couldn't resist choosing two for myself. The large crispy croissants are individually wrapped, and when you open the package, you'll smell the irresistible scent of butter. When you reheat them at home, they become even more deliciously crispy. The shop started in a small corner of a gas station in Wakamatsu long ago, then moved to factory direct sales, and now it's been over 10 years since the main store was relocated to the current Coal Building. The popularity has spread nationwide, with Mikazukiya shops popping up all over. Whenever friends from other prefectures visit, I always take them to this shop.
