Located near Nankai Namba Station, Kintetsu and Hanshin Osaka Namba Station, and Osaka Metro Namba Station, right behind Hotel Royal Classic Osaka, is a Sichuan Chinese restaurant known as "Zaura." I came to Namba on a weekday morning for some banking errands and suddenly had a craving for mapo tofu. I searched in the area and found this restaurant. The interior is chic, resembling a high-end Chinese restaurant, with about 50 seats including table and counter seating. As I was dining alone, I was seated at the counter. The lunch menu offers a choice of one main dish with half-sized famous Sichuan mapo tofu, rice, soup, and pickles. The options include gyoza, karaage (each 760 yen), Sichuan fried rice, Tianjin rice, yurin chicken (each 870 yen), Sichuan tantan noodles, double dumplings (970 yen). Each lunch set comes with a free extra portion of rice, and for an additional 110 yen, you can also get an extra portion of mapo tofu. After some contemplation, I ordered the "yurin chicken lunch." It arrived promptly on a tray, with yurin chicken on top of shredded cabbage, a small stone pot of mapo tofu, egg drop soup, rice, and pickles. The fragrance of Sichuan pepper emanated from the mapo tofu. I started with the yurin chicken, which consisted of large pieces of crispy fried chicken placed on top of shredded cabbage, garnished with finely chopped green onions and lemon, and drizzled with a mild sweet vinegar sauce. The chicken was crispy on the outside but juicy and flavorful inside, with the sweet vinegar sauce providing a refreshing touch. The combination of green onions and lemon added a harmonious flavor. The mapo tofu was served in a heated stone pot, bubbling hot. It was spicy and numbing, but as I savored it, I discovered a deep umami flavor beneath the heat. The tofu helped balance out the spiciness, creating a well-rounded taste. The moderate spiciness paired perfectly with the rice. I wished I had ordered the extra portion of mapo tofu for an additional 110 yen. While I came to this restaurant for the mapo tofu, I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious yurin chicken. Additionally, I observed a senior staff member patiently guiding a new staff member, which gave me a sense of the restaurant's excellence.
