On Sunday, September 3, 2023, I visited Kansai International Airport for the first time since January 2017 on a day trip. I arrived via Nankai Electric Railway and reached the airport a little after 9 AM. Despite entering September, the scorching heat continued with the temperature outside at 37°C. I made sure to protect myself from sunburn and enjoyed the day to the fullest.
As I explored the first terminal, I noticed many changes that surprised me. There were many areas under construction, and the 3rd floor, which used to house many eateries and souvenir shops when I visited six and a half years ago, had all disappeared. It had now become a space exclusively for employees, leaving me wondering where the eateries had gone. Eventually, I found a food court that debuted last year tucked away on the 2nd floor. It seems that due to the significant expansion from the introduction of LCC second terminal international flights about six years ago, the use of the second terminal increased, leading to the consolidation and relocation of eateries from the first terminal.
Feeling quite hungry as I skipped breakfast, I decided to have an early lunch around 10:30 AM to enjoy the rest of the day. I quickly headed to the food court that debuted last year and found it reasonably crowded even at 10:30 AM, but I managed to find multiple available seats. It was a good decision to arrive early as it would likely get packed during peak hours. The food court housed five establishments (④-⑧), with an additional three (①-③) located on the same floor outside the food court. Except for McDonald's, which operates 24 hours, all other establishments are open from 7 AM to 10 PM.
I chose to dine at "自家製麺 杵屋麦丸" and ordered the following:
- Beef Udon (warm) 1 serving - ¥850
- Mountain vegetable mixed rice - ¥200
- Sweet potato tempura - ¥190
- Eggplant tempura - ¥190
Total: ¥1,430
The overall evaluation of the above establishment was excellent, with no negatives, earning a 5-star rating. The menu variety, prices, and other factors were on par with Marugame Seimen. The self-service tempura menu was also similar to Marugame Seimen. "自家製麺 杵屋麦丸" has another location in Kanto besides Kansai Airport. During my stay from 10:30 AM to just past 11 AM, the place was bustling with families and Asian tourists.
I then proceeded to the Kansai Airport Sky View Observation Deck by taking a free shuttle bus from bus stop 1, which is about a 4-minute ride from Terminal 1. The observation deck, which is currently free to enter, used to cost ¥500 twenty years ago. It consists of a 5-story building with observation spaces on the 4th and 5th floors, a Sky Museum on the 3rd floor, and souvenir shops and eateries on the 4th floor. I had a great time exploring the Sky Museum and the observation deck until just past 2 PM, surrounded by families and tourists.
I returned to Terminal 1 at 2:20 PM via the shuttle bus and then headed to Osaka Umeda by the 3 PM limousine bus, bidding farewell to Kansai International Airport. This concludes my post, and I have attached detailed information about the lunch establishment visited this time. The attached photos include four of the lunch at "自家製麺 杵屋麦丸" and four bonus photos from the observation deck.
