《November 2021 Revisit》This is my favorite cafe in the JR Otaru Station area. To get there, you need to walk straight towards the sea from Otaru Station, turn right one street before the canal street, and you will see a building that looks very old-fashioned on the right side of the mountain. The opening time is 9:00 am, which is a bit late for breakfast use, so it would be nice if they opened at 8:00 am if possible. When you enter the entrance, you will see antique-style furniture and furnishings displayed, creating an atmosphere as if you have slipped back in time to the early Showa era. The store is on the second floor, and when you go up the stairs, you will find a space with a similar atmosphere. With such a building, you may worry that they will charge a considerable price, but when you look at the menu, everything is quite affordable...almost surprisingly so. This time, I ordered a hot "Cafe Mocha" with a "Morning Set", and the morning set can only be ordered by those who order a drink. It costs only 110 yen including tax, which is very reasonable, but it comes with scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon on one plate, and a separate salad. It also includes margarine and ketchup mustard for sausages. With all these costs included in the 110 yen set, you may wonder how they can make a profit or if they are operating at a loss. You might think they make a profit from drinks, but the Cafe Mocha costs 429 yen including tax, which is the same as the blended coffee... When ordering, I was also tempted by the "Five-Color Dumplings", which is a set of five skewered dumplings with miso, red bean paste, sesame, soybean flour, and seaweed, including tea for 429 yen including tax. At this point, it's a bit scary. Are they running a non-profit charity business, maintaining and managing such a building while offering such a full-time menu? There must be something behind it (laughs). If you're curious, please check it out!

The exterior of the restaurant is designed like an old folk house, while inside, classical music plays from large speakers. The customers are mostly Japanese, with many women. There is no one talking loudly. The elderly master and his wife, along with a young female staff member, work hard to manage the spacious interior. The seating area is on the second floor. Due to the old folk house design, there is also a staircase leading to the third floor, sparking a sense of adventure to peek inside. The place was almost full, so I refrained from taking photos. I did, however, capture a photo of the beautifully folded curtains at the window. By the way, there is a shop across the street that displays antiques from around the world. The prices are quite high, but it's worth a visit just to look around.

I ate half-fried "naruto" in Otaru and then went to see the canal in the town. It was a hot day, with temperatures exceeding 32°C for the first time this year even in Hokkaido, making it feel very humid. Despite the heat, dancers parading in the town for the "Tide Festival" were adding to the heatwave in the city. Unable to bear the heat, I sought refuge in a stylish café before reaching the canal. The café was located in a historic building with the name "Gotō Shōten" from the Meiji and Taisho eras. This building, constructed in 1920, is designated as a historical building in Otaru City. The stylish café on the second floor of this historic building is called "Cafe Shikinai Shokudō." I enjoyed a graceful café time while listening to classical music in the serene atmosphere that exudes the weight of 100 years of history. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

On a certain holiday in Otaru, here is a food tour at Cafe Shokuuchi Shokudo. We stopped here to take a break as our feet were tired in the middle of our Otaru food tour. It's a bit away from the canal, but worth it. We arrived at 2:30 PM and there were 2 groups of 8 customers before us and 4 groups of 10 customers after us. Our orders were: - Otaru Beer (Pilsner) 390 yen - Freshly cut ham 590 yen - Five-color dumplings (with tea) 390 yen - Iced Cafe Mocha 390 yen - Strawberry Milk 490 yen The five-color dumplings were great value for money! The beer was cheap and the atmosphere was great! However, the iced cafe mocha and strawberry milk were a bit watery. The freshly cut ham didn't suit our taste. But overall, the five-color dumplings and beer were fantastic. We enjoyed our meal. Thank you!

I was checking out some reviews on Tabelog and saw that the dango (sweet dumplings) looked delicious, so I added it to my must-visit list when I found out it's also a setting for one of my favorite works. When I went upstairs, I saw that the shop had about 5 tables filled and more than half were empty, but they said they couldn't seat me at the moment. I noticed the elderly owner and someone working in the back, so I figured they must be really busy. There were still some tables that hadn't been seated, so if you're patient enough to wait, then go ahead and wait. It's not suitable for those who can't wait. The five-color dango, cream shiratama zenzai, and coffee were all incredibly delicious. The dango was soft and carefully made! The zenzai matched perfectly with the sweetness of the red bean paste and cream, and the coffee was a great addition. All for just 390 yen. It's of a quality that would normally cost over 500 yen, but to be able to enjoy it at such a low price in this day and age... it felt like stepping back in time in more ways than one at this shop. I was the first in line to wait, but after that, they started seating people one after another at the empty tables. It took about an hour in total, including the waiting time, but the food was so delicious that I finished eating in about 5 minutes. You can enjoy the retro atmosphere. It was a cafe with the best cost performance.

The retro building of the popular cafe in Otaru is charming, especially on the second floor where you can find a retro-style coffee shop. In the morning, there are many tourists enjoying breakfast there. The prices are cheap and you can feel the Japanese atmosphere with items like rice cakes. The owner is always busy, so it's best to visit when you have plenty of time. Everything takes a while, but the 5-color rice cakes with tea for 390 yen are surprisingly delicious and easy to eat.

There is a building in Sapporo that exudes a sense of history that you won't find in newer cafes. The atmosphere is very dignified and not something you would typically see in a modern café. The spacious hall is staffed by two elderly individuals who provide a warm and gentle service. However, the staff is quite elderly, so don't expect speedy service. Customers had to wait a bit for the staff to attend to them, but it's best to just find a seat on your own. The building itself exudes history, and so do the menu prices. A set of 5 different rice cakes and green tea costs ¥390, while coffee is also ¥390. It's incredibly affordable, and the taste is outstanding. It's rare to find a café with such great value for money.

I visited the restaurant on the last evening of the consecutive holidays. An elderly couple seemed to be managing the large hall, struggling to take new orders as the tables were still filled with used dishes. After waiting for a while, I finally placed my order and had a set of rice cakes. It was homemade and reasonably priced (around 400 yen with tea), and I was very satisfied. The restaurant was renovated from an old building with high ceilings and a spacious layout, creating a comfortable atmosphere. I would like to visit again when I have some free time. I hope this restaurant continues to thrive for a long time.

Opposite the hotel where we stayed is a cafe. It has a modern atmosphere and was quite empty when we visited, so we could relax comfortably. The music added to the cozy feel, and I felt like I could spend a leisurely time here reading a book. The dumplings were incredibly delicious, with a chewy yet fluffy texture that might be the best I've ever had. The matcha had a delicious bitterness that made it easy to drink, and although I love strawberry milk, this was the best I've ever had. I highly recommend it to other strawberry milk lovers.

The shop is run by an elderly couple. They work hard together to prepare the food, but there are only two of them so it may take a little time. If you don't mind the wait, you can enjoy a leisurely time in the atmosphere of the Taisho era. Your order may take a while to be taken, but that's part of the charm. It's best to avoid busy times when visiting.

There is a cafe in Otaru famous for its skewered dumplings. It is run by an elderly couple, so be prepared to wait as they are quite busy. The prices are surprisingly cheap. The warabi mochi and skewered dumplings are both delicious and have a refined taste.

I visited this restaurant after an early morning cruise in Otaru, looking for a light breakfast. Around 9:20 am, there were 3 groups of customers already there. The owner kindly informed me that it may take some time as he was running the place alone. The retro Showa-era interior was well-maintained and created a great atmosphere, with classical music playing softly from the TANNOY speakers. The clientele was also pleasant, allowing me to relax and enjoy my time there. The iced coffee was delicious and came in a generous portion, allowing me to leisurely enjoy it. For an additional 100 yen, I had a morning set which included tasty buttered toast, honey, salad, sausage, bacon, and scrambled eggs - all of high quality and well worth the price. At some point, I noticed that the kitchen had another lady working, making it a two-person operation. The rest of the menu also had reasonable prices, so I will definitely revisit this place on my next trip to Otaru. Stay healthy and keep up the good work! Thank you for the wonderful meal.

I visited the restaurant before 3 PM on a regular day. There were 6-7 groups of customers already there, and 3 groups came in after me. One group couldn't wait and left. The majority of customers seemed to be in their 20s. At first, I couldn't find any staff members and there was no one to show me to a table, so I nervously sat at an empty table. Eventually, an elderly male staff member appeared and started serving water and taking orders. He gave me a menu when I asked for it, and came back later to take my order. I received my drink first, and then after the ice had melted a bit, the 5-colored dumplings I ordered arrived. This is not the place for those in a hurry, but I enjoyed the retro atmosphere of the restaurant while waiting. The dumplings were soft and delicious. My partner recommended the seaweed flavor, while I preferred the red bean paste. The restaurant had a retro vibe that made me feel like Dracula might appear from the third floor. Surprisingly, the prices were very affordable. The 5-colored dumplings were 390 yen before tax, and the iced coffee and apple juice were the same price. The only thing that bothered me was the restroom sink, but other than that, the restaurant was clean and pleasant.

Finally managed to sneak in here! I've been curious about their morning set and tried to go a few times, but the timing never seemed to work out. On this day, I thought they probably weren't serving morning set, but when I arrived, I saw the sign! However, it was just before the morning set time. That day, I didn't have lunch plans, and they only had dessert available, so I hurriedly went up the stairs to the second floor. Hmm? No one here? "Excuse me?" After a while, the master came out and greeted me. "Welcome! Are you serving morning set?" "Oh, sorry, it's only until 10:30." (It was almost 11, but maybe it's the last order?) "Oh, I see! I'll come back another time then. This place is so lovely, can I just take some pictures?" "Sure!" (Snapping away) "By the way, you can have alcohol here in the morning, right?" "Yes, you can!... Since you came all this way, would you like to have the morning set?" Such a kind offer! I gladly accepted. They offered to add the morning set for just an extra ¥100 when you order a drink. Unfortunately, I couldn't add it to my alcohol order. - Iced Café Latte ¥380: The coffee and milk layers looked beautiful, and it was so tempting to just drink it without mixing. The aroma was lovely, and it tasted delicious when mixed, with a nice balance of bitterness and sweetness. - Morning Set ¥100: The toast was thickly sliced, served with margarine and a small bowl of honey. The salad seemed to vary daily, sometimes with potato salad. It came with Wiener, bacon, cheese, and omelet. The omelet was slightly sweet and delicious. - Hokkaido Kellner ¥380: A refreshing dry wine with a lovely aroma, perfect for the morning. It paired well with cheese, but I think the red wine would have been better with Wiener and bacon. I almost considered getting a refill. I felt happy enjoying a luxurious morning set in the antique atmosphere while listening to baroque music. The speakers at Tan-noi were impressive and cool! **Caution:** This place is recommended for those who can spend time leisurely, as it's run by an elderly couple. It may not be suitable for those in a hurry. They appreciate your understanding if things take time. They may not be able to open on time due to health reasons. They may also not be able to answer the phone when busy. There are plenty of magazines near the register to pass the time, and you can enjoy music on the good speakers while waiting. Both of them are kind and working hard, so please be understanding. When I was having my morning set, groups of girls on school trips or tourists kept coming in, excitedly taking pictures of the dumplings, parfait, and cakes that all looked delicious. "Wow, that looks so good!" They were all having a great time. In the midst of this, three grandpas also came in and sat down, but it seemed like they mistook this place for a soba restaurant. "Oh... we came to the wrong place, haha." It was cute. Next time, I want to try their sweets and lunch menu! It's nice to be able to enjoy Hokkaido wine and sake in the morning. I'd love to try their morning set again! Thank you for the meal!

On May 21, 2022, a retro Showa-style cafe in the Otaru Canal area♡ Desserts and meal menus are very affordable!! Take a break while enjoying tea.✄----------------------------‐✄︎︎︎︎ ☑︎︎︎︎︎5 Color Dumplings/390 ☑︎3 Color Warabi Mochi/390 ✄----------------------------‐✄ This is my second time coming here, but the first time I couldn't find the shop and wandered around the same street. On the first floor, there is a shop selling daifuku and a soba shop! Going up to the second floor feels like entering an old Western-style building! With antiques and furnishings, it feels like slipping back in time to the Showa era (´˘`*). The shop seems to be very popular on Saturdays, with a constant stream of customers keeping them very busy! The old man also looks very busy, almost making you want to help. When I came before, I had a bento box, which was cheap and had various side dishes that were delicious♡ They don't serve meal menus during busy times on weekends! They only offer drinks and dessert menus. The desserts are also reasonably priced, with the popular items being dumplings and warabi mochi! It's only 390 yen and comes with tea, which is too cheap♡ The zenzai and anmitsu also looked delicious (◍•ᴗ•◍). We shared warabi mochi and dumplings for two people ( ˙ᵕ˙ )5 Color Dumplings include soy sauce, sweet bean paste, sesame, soybean flour, and seaweed. Warabi Mochi includes soybean flour, matcha, and brown sugar. The mochi is soft and chewy (*'ω'*), with a good texture and a variety of flavors to enjoy~! The warabi mochi was also delicious, especially the matcha flavor♡ When you ask the old man for water, it's only 100 yen~ Despite being busy, it was a fun time with jokes mixed in. Thank you for the meal♡

I visited Otaru almost 10 times during my two years living in Sapporo, as the express bus from Sapporo to Otaru sometimes passes through Maruyama. There were times when I would finish work and take the rapid airport train to Otaru to enjoy sushi, then take the express bus back home. I first learned about this restaurant from the local TV show "Hokkaido Style" on BS Nippon Television, featuring the local talent Satran. I visited once while living there, and this was my second visit. The restaurant is located on the second floor of a retro building, with antique furniture and high-end speakers creating a unique atmosphere for dining. The highlight of this place is the incredible value - you can enjoy a "Shikinaibento" set with about 20 items for only 590 yen plus tax. The service is mostly handled by an elderly man, so it can be a bit slow at times, but it's understandable. During this time, Sapporo was refraining from serving alcohol due to COVID-19, but Otaru was still serving, so I also enjoyed a glass of Otaru wine (Niagara) for 350 yen, which added to the great experience.

You can enjoy a splendid bento box at a reasonable price, but be prepared to wait as the food takes a while to come out since it's run by a couple. I waited for an hour, but considering this place feels like time has stopped, the waiting time somehow becomes nostalgic.

Around 11 o'clock, I visited the cafe and there was one customer already there. The cafe was very spacious, with jazz music and antique items displayed, creating a modern and stylish atmosphere. The service was provided by an elderly man, who was actually quite friendly despite some negative reviews I had read. I saw a couple and a female employee, so I assume there are usually more staff members working. I was surprised by the prices on the menu - the morning set for 100 yen was incredibly cheap, and even the cake set and traditional Japanese sweets were a few hundred yen less than other places. The lunch set was also very affordable, starting at 649 yen and coming with 30 items. I was concerned about how they can sustain the business with such low prices. For this visit, I opted for the lunch set, specifically the Shionai bento box (the cheapest option). Although I arrived early before the lunch service started at 11:30, the staff kindly took my order. I noticed that tissues and chopsticks were not restocked during my wait, but I understood that the staff was limited. The cafe is located on the second floor, with a traditional Japanese sweet shop and a soba noodle restaurant on the first floor. The cafe might not be easily noticed due to the flags and banners outside, which could explain why there weren't many customers. When the lunch arrived, I was surprised by the portion size - it was quite large and seemed like a catering-sized bento box. The taste was overall home-cooked style, slightly on the rich side, but with a warmth and simple deliciousness that comes from freshly made dishes. I believe they prioritize quality over profit. As I was leaving, the elderly lady working there kindly asked me if I felt cold outside, showing a warm and hospitable touch. The cafe reminded me of old-fashioned coffee shops and I hope more locals and tourists can take a break there. It was a delightful experience, thank you for the meal.

This is Otaru. It's my 8th stop on my solo tour of Otaru. I've been eating sweets all day and only had soba as my main meal, so it's time for a proper meal. I decided to go to Iro Uchi Shokudo, a place I've been wanting to visit for a while. I managed to snag the last seat on the second floor as it was almost full. The staff, an old man and two young ladies, seemed a bit overwhelmed as customers kept coming in and they were short-staffed. Finally, I placed my order. The retro atmosphere inside the restaurant was amazing, just like Otaru. I ordered the Iro Uchi Bento Box for 590 yen plus tax. It took about 15 minutes to arrive. The bento box included salad, rice, miso soup, simmered daikon radish, rolled omelette, grilled fish, gratin, nagaimo (Chinese yam), tempura, sashimi, fried chicken, grilled meat, and many other side dishes. And all of this for only 649 yen, which is unbelievably cheap! I definitely want to try their other bento boxes next time. Even though the service was a bit slow, it was worth the wait. This place is popular with people of all ages, and it's easy to see why. You can cover all your daily food groups in just one meal here. Many people were drinking beer in the afternoon, and this bento box would make a great accompaniment. The food was delicious, and it was the perfect lunch. This is definitely a place to visit with family. If you're ever unsure about what to eat in Otaru, I highly recommend this restaurant. Thank you for the meal!

On a certain holiday, in Otaru, during a new phase that the world is curious about, I visited a cafe in an old building with a rich history. As soon as I entered, I saw a roasting machine and various collections, creating a mysterious atmosphere. Going up to the second floor, I was impressed by the spacious open space with many tables, a grand piano in the foreground, and a huge speaker that looked like a chest of drawers in the back. The classical music playing from the speaker added to the elegant ambiance. I ordered a "Cream White Dumpling Anmitsu" and an "Iced Coffee" which felt surprisingly affordable after having expensive sushi earlier. The anmitsu was a delightful mix of flavors and textures, while the iced coffee had a unique depth to it. Overall, the place offered a relaxing atmosphere where one could enjoy their time while listening to classical music. Thank you for the meal.
