Lunch after work on a weekday. I had a few errands that I could only do on weekdays, so I was looking for a lunch spot while considering how to fit them all in. I suddenly thought of going here, "Kakizaki Tororo" main store. It is located near the Bashidashi bus stop on County Road 21 (formerly Karatsu Kaido) in Hatsu 5-chome. The restaurant is a renovated over 100-year-old traditional house from the Taisho era, and the interior still retains the atmosphere of that time. As the name suggests, their specialty is grated yam tororo. They use "Kyusen Akazao," a yam grown at the foot of the Kyusen mountain spanning Nakagawa City and Tosu City in Saga Prefecture, and the grated tororo has a strong stickiness. It's been a while, or rather, I realized that the last time I visited was 10 years ago. I hadn't been there for that long... It was my first time entering in a while, and to my surprise, there were no menu cards on the table. It said, "Please scan the QR code to view the menu," which was a bit surprising. They do provide a paper menu if you ask for it, but I wonder if this is also a product of the times. When I visited before, I had the "Kakitoro Gozen" which came with grilled beef tongue, but this time, I decided to go for fish instead of meat! So, I chose the other popular menu item, the "Kakitoro Tekkadon" (1710 yen including tax). I ordered a cold green tea (460 yen including tax) made from organically grown tea leaves from Ukiha while waiting. After a short wait, the set of Tekkadon arrived on a tray. It included grated yam in a mortar, a colorful tuna sashimi Tekkadon, miso soup, pickles (takana pickles), and simmered dried radish. First, I grated a little bit of the yam in the mortar, and as usual, it had a strong stickiness. It had a dashi flavor, which was also delicious on its own. The tuna in the Tekkadon was not only colorful but also had good freshness when eaten as sashimi. The meat was firm and fresh. I poured the grated yam over the rice in the bowl. The rice in the bowl was barley rice, containing dietary fiber that is good for regulating intestinal health. It was nutritious and good for the body. The red miso soup was a nice touch, as the Tekkadon was a bit light in flavor. Tororo rice is light and easy to eat, even in this summer season when appetite tends to decrease. And when it's delicious, its effects are exceptional. Although it was my first visit in a while, I was able to enjoy a delicious tororo rice as expected, and it turned out to be a very satisfying lunch.
