Located near the Hakozaki Hachimangu Shrine in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City, and along the old Karatsu Kaido road, is a specialty restaurant that serves dishes made with "tororo," which is grated raw yam also known as "yamakake." The owner, Kenai Tomita, renovated a traditional two-story machiya (townhouse) dating back over 100 years that used to be his great-grandfather's residence and opened the restaurant in 2011. The restaurant is becoming a symbol of the Hakozaki area. The specialty dish is the "tororo sukiyaki" priced at 3,240 yen per person, which is a beef hot pot with plenty of "tororo" mixed with beaten eggs. The restaurant also sells folk craft pottery called "Koishiwara ware" from Toho-mura, Asakura-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture at the entrance. I visited the restaurant with a colleague for lunch on our way to work. We parked at the SK Parking lot near Yagi Hospital, which is about 100 meters south of the restaurant (90 minutes free parking with Hakozaki Tororo usage). We were seated in a tatami room with a low table and ordered the "Hako Tororo Tekkadon" priced at 1,550 yen. The dish consisted of barley rice topped with lean tuna and shredded seaweed, with grated natural yam mixed with bonito dashi from Oomaru Katsuobushi, a long-established store in Ibusuki, Kagoshima. The tororo had a rustic and mineral-rich flavor, which paired perfectly with the fluffy barley rice. The side dishes of homemade konjac simmered in soy sauce and miso soup were also delicious. It's no wonder this popular restaurant continues to attract customers. I look forward to visiting with my family next time to try the signature dish, "Tororo Sukiyaki." Thank you for the delicious meal.

I chose the 4800 yen course at Sukezaki Tororo. The combination of sukiyaki, tororo, and egg was so delicious. The finishing udon was chewy and amazing. I was impressed by the yuzu sherbet dessert, but I forgot to take a picture of it.

A trendy old-fashioned house-style restaurant suddenly appeared in a residential area. When I went on a Sunday afternoon, there were about 5 groups waiting in front, and I think I waited for about 45 minutes! It seems like you can also reserve a seat if you reserve the sukiyaki in advance. I wasn't particularly drawn to sukiyaki with grated yam, so I decided to wait in line and try it out. I went for a slightly luxurious lunch with a draft beer, a mountain-style raw fish bowl, and even ordered beef tongue on a separate plate! The beef tongue was a bit thin, so I think I prefer eating it at a regular beef tongue restaurant! It went well with the beer. The raw fish bowl was delicious with plenty of grated yam! The atmosphere is great for a weekend lunch date! However, for those who eat a lot, the lunch set alone might not be enough...haha.

After visiting Munakata Taisha, we took off our shoes and enjoyed some delicious zenzai on tatami mats, feeling the warmth of the early summer sun. The Junmai Ginjo sake paired perfectly with our shrine-hopping lunch. By the time it was 3 o'clock, we were full from a delicious lunch of grilled sea bream. We then proceeded to visit Hakozaki Shrine and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

It was lunchtime on a holiday, so I waited standing for about an hour. It's a popular restaurant. The food was quite ordinary. However, the atmosphere was nice as it was in an old traditional house. You can order food from your smartphone. It might be convenient for families with small children as there are tatami seating.

I visited this restaurant for the first time. I decided to have lunch around here on my way back from the prefectural library. It has a quiet atmosphere in an old folk house. I arrived around 12 o'clock and there were about 2 groups of customers already there. We ordered the grated yam set meal and the grilled fish set meal. The grated yam was quite light in texture. The beef tongue was just average. The grilled fish was marinated in sweet soy sauce and was delicious. The ambiance is nice, so it might be a good spot for a date. The taste was neither good nor bad. Thank you for the meal.

If you're going to eat tororo, I recommend this place. The grilled fish set meal tends to sell out, so it's best to go early and place your order! The taste is quite delicious, so I want to come back again! This time, I ordered the mountain yam set meal and the tororo sashimi had a sweetness like cream cheese, which was delicious. You order by scanning the menu with a QR code. Payment is done at your table. The atmosphere was very relaxing and pleasant.

I've been to the branch a few times, but this was my first time at the main store. It has a really wonderful atmosphere! There's a 100 yen parking lot right in front, so I parked there and had the Tekka-don and Tororo. The textures were fluffy and it was incredibly delicious! They also accept electronic money like Fukuoka's Umakaken.

I had a work assignment in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City. For lunch, I visited "Hakozaki Tororo" located near Kyushu University Hospital. The restaurant is situated in a complex area with old-fashioned zoning that can be quite confusing. I arrived at 11:25 and found out that the affiliated parking lot mentioned on the restaurant's website was already full. I had to find another available paid parking nearby and walked to the restaurant using Google Maps. It was a traditional townhouse with a quiet and unassuming exterior, making it hard to notice without a curtain and a well-designed information board in front. Inside, I informed the staff that I was dining alone and was led to a room with tatami flooring where I took off my shoes. The room had several 4-person and 2-person table settings. I opted for a 2-person table. Instead of a physical menu, I scanned a QR code for the menu, which was a first for me. I had already decided on ordering the "Grilled Fish Set (1,760 yen, tax included)" from their website. I chose the "Grilled Yellowtail" without knowing what to expect. The meal included rice, miso soup, side dishes, tororo (grated yam), pickles, and minced seaweed. The yellowtail was served after a 15-minute wait. The miso soup was robust, and the tororo had a delicate flavor. The meal was satisfying, but I wished for a bit more rice. The yellowtail was flavorful, and the tororo complemented its taste well. The side dish of carrots and daikon radish was a nice palate cleanser. The restaurant got busier as I ate, and I noticed that most customers seemed relaxed and unhurried, unlike me who had to get back to work. Despite feeling slightly full, I refrained from ordering dessert as I didn't want to add to the wait for other customers. Overall, it was a delicious meal, and I left feeling content. Thank you for the meal.

Since I saw the branch of Hakata Tororo-san on Takamiya Street, I have been curious about it. Finally, I was able to visit it. The atmosphere of the shop, both outside and inside, is very traditional Japanese, making me feel like I am at a hot spring resort or ryokan. This time, I tried the most popular Hakata Tororo set meal, and the bite of the Hakata Tororo Tekka Don was also delicious. I thought I would try the Tekka Don next time. I haven't eaten natural yam tororo much before, but it was sticky yet smooth with a good flavor. I don't usually eat much rice, but this time I found myself enjoying the barley rice a lot. ♡

I had the course with natural yam and sukiyaki. It was very delicious and highly recommended. Make sure to make a reservation as there may be a wait. Note that there are only tatami seating available, not sunken kotatsu tables. This charming restaurant has an old folk house style. I recommend the main branch.

I was deeply moved by the natural yam dishes at a restaurant I visited last year. I decided to come back again next New Year near Hakozaki Shrine. As I get older, sukiyaki has started to feel heavy, but the elegant broth here seems like something I could enjoy at any age. I like to eat everything except the meat with the seasoning of the broth, mixed with raw egg and grated yam. It may not look appealing, but the finale of the grated yam udon is incredibly delicious. It's located in Higashi-ku, outside my usual area, but I hope I can come back again next New Year.

Unlike regular tororo, the stickiness of this one is amazing. It's great to eat over rice, but even on its own, the yam is delicious. The daily specials are also interesting, like the "Curry Croquette and Creamed Chin-gen-sai" I had. I was surprised at how well the croquette went with the yam. A few years ago, I tried the yam ice cream here and it was unexpectedly delicious. The texture was different from what I imagined, and I ended up ordering it again. If you've never tried yam before, I highly recommend visiting this restaurant. Thank you for the meal.

"Hakozaki Tororo" in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City is a great place to enjoy delicious tororo dishes. It is quite rare to find a tororo specialty shop, but it is definitely worth trying at least once a year. This restaurant grows its own natural yams and provides authentic dishes using tororo, which have been thoroughly researched for their deliciousness. The restaurant is located in a 100-year-old Taisho-era building near Kyushu University Hospital, offering a traditional setting to enjoy ancient Japanese tororo cuisine. The street in front of the restaurant is part of the Karatsu Kaido, a major road built during the Edo period that stretches from Kokura to Karatsu and Hirado. The area used to be a post town called Hakozaki-juku during the Edo period, and you can still find remnants of old houses in the area. The natural yams used here are a variety called Kyusenbu Akazao grown in Nakagawa City at the foot of the Kyusenbu mountain range that spans Fukuoka and Saga prefectures. When grated with the skin, it gives off a slightly red color and strong stickiness. The premium tororo made from Kyusenbu Akazao, stretched with a broth made from dried bonito flakes, pairs perfectly with meat and fish. The dishes I tried were the Hakotoro Tekkadan Don for 1,710 yen and an extra serving of tororo for 280 yen. It was delicious! Ordering extra tororo was definitely the right choice. The generous amount of tororo made the Tekkadan Don luxurious and delightful. Hakozaki Tororo is a popular spot with a line of customers waiting until the end of lunchtime. Nearby, you can visit Hakozaki Shrine, attracting many tourists. If you're in the area, be sure to try it out. It was a delicious meal, thank you! I might try the tororo sukiyaki next time. For beautiful photos and videos, search for k.t.r.from_fukuoka on Instagram."

I found a place in Hakozaki where you can enjoy wild yam dishes! It's a little hidden gem that looks like an old folk house, just a short walk from Hakozaki Shrine. You take off your shoes and sit on tatami mats to enjoy your meal. This time, I ordered the lunch set with the most food, the "Wild Yam Set Meal." I was impressed by the wild yam sashimi! It was my first time eating it as is. I love eating ingredients in their natural state, so I was really excited. The tempura was light and crispy, and I felt like I could eat as much as I wanted. When I looked at the menu, I wondered if I could finish it all, but I ended up polishing off the whole meal. If I lived nearby, I would definitely visit this place often. I wonder if you can also have the grated wild yam sukiyaki for lunch if you reserve it...? I saw someone else enjoying it at another table, so I was admiring it from afar. I will definitely visit again when I go back to Fukuoka!

I discovered this place on my way to work, so I decided to stop by for lunch. It's a traditional Japanese house serving dishes made with natural ingredients, perfect for health-conscious individuals. The prices are on the higher side. The dish with natural yam already has a good flavor, but it would be nice to have additional seasoning options for those who want to adjust the taste. The beef tongue was a bit disappointing as it was served cold... I also found the rice to be lukewarm (not sure if this was intentional). Maybe they could work on the timing of preparing the beef tongue and rice. Overall, the food was delicious, but considering the prices, it's a bit of a mixed feeling. The atmosphere of the traditional Japanese house is a plus though.

Lunch after work on a weekday. I had a few errands that I could only do on weekdays, so I was looking for a lunch spot while considering how to fit them all in. I suddenly thought of going here, "Kakizaki Tororo" main store. It is located near the Bashidashi bus stop on County Road 21 (formerly Karatsu Kaido) in Hatsu 5-chome. The restaurant is a renovated over 100-year-old traditional house from the Taisho era, and the interior still retains the atmosphere of that time. As the name suggests, their specialty is grated yam tororo. They use "Kyusen Akazao," a yam grown at the foot of the Kyusen mountain spanning Nakagawa City and Tosu City in Saga Prefecture, and the grated tororo has a strong stickiness. It's been a while, or rather, I realized that the last time I visited was 10 years ago. I hadn't been there for that long... It was my first time entering in a while, and to my surprise, there were no menu cards on the table. It said, "Please scan the QR code to view the menu," which was a bit surprising. They do provide a paper menu if you ask for it, but I wonder if this is also a product of the times. When I visited before, I had the "Kakitoro Gozen" which came with grilled beef tongue, but this time, I decided to go for fish instead of meat! So, I chose the other popular menu item, the "Kakitoro Tekkadon" (1710 yen including tax). I ordered a cold green tea (460 yen including tax) made from organically grown tea leaves from Ukiha while waiting. After a short wait, the set of Tekkadon arrived on a tray. It included grated yam in a mortar, a colorful tuna sashimi Tekkadon, miso soup, pickles (takana pickles), and simmered dried radish. First, I grated a little bit of the yam in the mortar, and as usual, it had a strong stickiness. It had a dashi flavor, which was also delicious on its own. The tuna in the Tekkadon was not only colorful but also had good freshness when eaten as sashimi. The meat was firm and fresh. I poured the grated yam over the rice in the bowl. The rice in the bowl was barley rice, containing dietary fiber that is good for regulating intestinal health. It was nutritious and good for the body. The red miso soup was a nice touch, as the Tekkadon was a bit light in flavor. Tororo rice is light and easy to eat, even in this summer season when appetite tends to decrease. And when it's delicious, its effects are exceptional. Although it was my first visit in a while, I was able to enjoy a delicious tororo rice as expected, and it turned out to be a very satisfying lunch.

First visit to a restaurant in Hakozaki that serves natural yam tororo. The photo is a screenshot of a video posted on Instagram story, so it may be a bit blurry. The tororo was delicious, with a chewy and sticky texture. I will definitely go back if I'm in the Hakozaki area again.

I visited for lunch. The atmosphere of the shop is quaint and charming, with a traditional Japanese house style. I went right after opening, but customers kept coming in. I ordered the Hako-Toro set meal. If you eat the grated yam with barley rice and beef tongue, you'll understand how amazing it is. The person I went with ate it up like a drink. They also had a good selection of alcohol. There were also various side dishes, so I would like to try them when I visit again.

I went to a restaurant in an old Japanese house that serves grated yam. I visited at 12:00 on a weekday and had to wait for about 30 minutes. The restaurant has a style where you take off your shoes. The food is like the taste of Kyushu! It was really delicious. The rice goes well with the grated yam. The rice is so good that you'll keep wanting more. The grated yam, with its amazing stickiness, was also very delicious.
