On Saturday, I had some business in Osaka Minami that finished around 2:30 pm. Although I wasn't particularly hungry since I had already eaten lunch at home, I decided to grab a quick snack and a drink before heading back. I chose "Tempura Tarojiro" in Sennichimae as the spot for my snack. The owner of this place trained at the popular casual tempura restaurant "Daikichi" in Sakai for about 10 years, and he is also the brother of the owner of "Sennichimae Okuta" where I had morning drinks before.
The restaurant is located in a small alley off the Sennichimae shopping street, right across from a sushi restaurant I frequent. It's a new and clean establishment with a counter seating area on two sides of the kitchen, a large table for six, and a smaller table for four. Since I was alone, I was seated at the counter.
I started with a refreshing draft beer and then ordered a summer sake called "Asakura." I wanted to try some tempura dishes as well, so I filled out an order form for the food items.
Here's what I ate:
- Potato salad: A mashed potato salad with a generous amount of black pepper.
- Conger eel: A thick and tender piece of conger eel served in a hot broth.
- Tempura dishes: I tried various tempura items including rare Japanese beef, matsutake mushrooms, sardines, and a jumbo red shrimp. The beef was juicy and flavorful, the matsutake had a strong aroma, and the sardines were deliciously fatty. The jumbo shrimp was good, especially with its head full of shrimp miso.
My favorite dish was the conger eel, which paired well with the sake. The tempura was tasty, with a slightly sweet tempura dipping sauce. Overall, everything was delicious, although I didn't find any standout tempura dishes.
I finished off with a total of four drinks, including the beer, sake, a shikuwasa citrus highball, and a Chita highball. The bill came out to 6,030 yen, a bit higher than I expected, but considering I had the pricey Japanese beef tempura, it was reasonable.
