Despite almost having the day off from work, it was snowing in Fukuoka in the morning. I wanted to watch the popular movie "Avatar: Way of Water" in 4DX3D, so I took a taxi to Canal City. I decided to have a late lunch to prepare for the over 3-hour movie, so I visited Umaya Canal City store. The location is about a 6-minute walk from Gion Station, and within walking distance from Hakata Station and Nakasu Kawabata Station. Umaya is operated by JR Kyushu Food Service Co., Ltd. and is one of the most reliable restaurants in Canal City, so I have used it several times. I arrived around 2:30 pm. The restaurant is spacious, with seating for about 70 people including counter seats, tables, and raised seating. I sat at a table for 4 people by myself. On the table, there were service items such as raw eggs (up to 1 per set meal), soy sauce, salt, shichimi (seven spice), toothpicks, and paper napkins. After being seated, a pitcher of cold tea, teacup, chopsticks, and paper towels were brought to me. Umaya's menu offers a variety of Kyushu specialties in addition to the famous beef tongue. This time, I ordered the following: ・Motsunabe set meal 1,750 yen ・Barley rice ・Chicken Nanban (3 pieces) 430 yen, for a total of 2,180 yen. The set meals at Umaya come with free refills of rice, miso soup, and pickles, as well as a complimentary raw egg from the table. You can also choose between white rice and barley rice. The dishes arrived in less than 5 minutes. The motsunabe set meal included motsunabe, barley rice, mentaiko (spicy cod roe), pickles, and champon noodles, with an additional order of 3 pieces of Chicken Nanban. Motsunabe lunches usually come with either rice or champon noodles, but having both options and free rice refills is fantastic! The motsunabe and vegetables were plentiful and satisfying. The Chicken Nanban was decent. There were too many side dishes, so I naturally went for a second serving of rice. I had mentaiko rice for the first bowl, but for the second bowl, I made egg rice with the raw egg on the table. Starting with mentaiko rice, then egg rice, and ending with champon noodles, I definitely overate. The hospitality of the staff varied greatly, but Umaya, as a restaurant in a commercial facility, has a high level of completion. I highly recommend it, especially in Canal City. Please visit at least once!
