Lake Kanayama is a dam lake located about halfway between Furano and Tomamu. Despite being a man-made lake, it exudes a strong natural presence and has become a quiet hidden gem tourist destination. When I visited in early August, the lavender fields were nearing the end of their bloom, but in earlier months, the view of the lake with the lavender fields in the background is truly unique. The accommodation is situated slightly up the slope from the lake, with just a glimpse of the lake visible through the trees. The log house surrounded by larch trees has a charming atmosphere. This place also offers gourmet French cuisine that you wouldn't expect in the middle of the mountains. I was impressed during my previous visit, so I opted for the chef's choice dinner plan again this time. The dinner was served in a restaurant with a rustic log cabin feel, starting with a cute corn flan amuse-bouche adorned with edible flowers, followed by appetizers, soup, fish dish, meat dish, dessert, and drinks. The creamy onion soup with foie gras was surprisingly sweet, and the grilled beef tenderloin was perfectly cooked and delicious. While the overall French cuisine was delicate and beautiful, I felt it could use a bit more of Hokkaido's robust flavors. Using luxury ingredients like foie gras and snow crab is nice, but as a traveler, I would prefer more local ingredients. The succession of cold soup-like dishes during summer felt a bit monotonous. However, there's no doubt that the French cuisine here is delicious. Breakfast can be chosen between Japanese or Western style at the time of booking or check-in. I opted for the Japanese breakfast, which consisted of simple dishes like grilled fish and simmered vegetables, but it was tasty. The view of the morning forest and lake from the window was lovely. The maisonette-style room had a cozy log cabin atmosphere, was clean, and well-equipped. The triple room, with a separate bath, toilet, and washbasin, as well as a spacious room and balcony, was comfortable (can be used as a twin room). Guests can also use the large public bath at Lake Kanayama Recreation Center, a 10-minute walk away, for free. Families or groups might enjoy the cottages in the log house, which come with cooking utensils for self-catering and the option to rent barbecue equipment (ingredients not provided). Nearby, there are several guides offering outdoor activities like canoeing, and the recreation center has go-karts, making it suitable for families on an extended stay. Prices during the peak summer season were around 25,000 yen per person for a triple room with twin usage and the chef's choice dinner. For a twin room with a regular original French dinner plan, it was around 17,000 yen per person during the same period.
