I have detailed information in past reviews, but Koyamada Tea Shop is a long-established store with a history dating back to the Edo period. They offer Ume-gaeshi mochi to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, which is why I trust this shop. I have not visited during peak hours, but they generally bake each order by hand. The Ume-gaeshi mochi is fragrant, with a crispy outer layer that bursts when you bite into it, and the mochi itself melts in your mouth. The filling is smooth and has a nostalgic taste.

I visited a tea house located in Dazaifu on my way back from the Kyushu National Museum. The interior of the tea house was quite spacious with a traditional wooden structure and tatami seating. They also had a terrace with red umbrellas. I tried the Ume-gaeshi mochi and matcha set for 650 yen, which was delicious. It was a nice place to take a break from the crowded streets near Dazaifu's main shrine. Overall, it was a good spot to relax and enjoy some snacks.

Located within the precincts of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is the "Koyamada Tea Shop," a long-established tea house with a history of 350 years. They have preserved the taste of olden times since the Edo period and are designated as a supplier to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, offering Ume Gaeshi mochi during shrine ceremonies.
Matcha Set (650 yen)
After visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and hanging an ema (votive tablet), I came across this tea house with red tatami seats and was tempted by the matcha tea, so I decided to stop by. Of course, I wanted to have something to eat with the tea. The matcha tea and freshly baked Ume Gaeshi mochi from this longstanding establishment since the Edo period were amazing.

The sweetness is well balanced with a hint of salt, making it enjoyable for both adults and children. The pickled plum served on the side, along with the refreshing plum tea, were also excellent. It's a cozy restaurant that I would definitely want to visit again when I come to Dazaifu.

Finally visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine~♪ When you think of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, you can't help but think of "Umebayashi Mochi." Along the approach to the shrine, there are many shops offering Umebayashi Mochi. I purchased Umebayashi Mochi as a souvenir from "Kasano-ya" on the approach and then visited the shrine. Afterwards, I went to a hidden gem behind Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine (Koyamada Satei) to try freshly baked Umebayashi Mochi. At the entrance of the shop, you can see the father busily baking Umebayashi Mochi, with a fragrant aroma filling the air. According to Koyamada Satei's website, the origin of Umebayashi Mochi is as follows: When Sugawara no Michizane was exiled to Enoki-dera, an old woman was selling mochi near Anrakuji. She sympathized with Michizane's situation and would occasionally welcome him to the shop, bringing mochi to comfort him. When Michizane passed away, they placed this mochi, his favorite, on a plum branch and offered it to his spirit. Following this story, the mochi was named Umebayashi Mochi, and it was said that eating this mochi would prevent illness, gaining popularity. With a history of 350 years, Koyamada Satei has preserved the traditional taste since the Edo period and continues to be the official supplier of Umebayashi Mochi for Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine ceremonies. Made with the finest domestic azuki beans and secret mochi flour, Umebayashi Mochi has a subtle and elegant flavor that has been loved by many visitors for generations. When I bought Umebayashi Mochi (130 yen) at the shop, the kind proprietress said, "It's hot, so please come in and cool down," and even served me cold tea. Grateful for her kindness! Sitting on a long bench, I tried the freshly baked Umebayashi Mochi. The dough was fragrant and chewy, while the sweet and rich red bean paste inside complemented it perfectly. When I tried the Umebayashi Mochi from Kasano-ya at home, I found Koyamada Satei's version to be more delicious. Maybe because it was freshly baked and piping hot? Thank you to the kind proprietress at Koyamada Satei for the warm hospitality♪

I visited this restaurant for lunch after visiting Dazaifu as part of my Fukuoka trip. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is quite deep inside, so I went all the way to the back for my visit, and on the way back, I stopped by this tea shop. Unfortunately, the plum season had already ended. I ordered the meat udon for 600 yen and plum rice cake for 130 yen to help me relax after the visit. The plum rice cake had a refreshing sweetness to it.

The scent of Umegaya mochi fills the air inside the shop, adding to the enjoyable experience of dining and drinking there. The coffee is rich and flavorful, and savoring it in this unique atmosphere makes it taste even better. It is incredibly delicious, spreading its goodness throughout your whole body. You must try this deliciousness in this space.

I visited Koyamada Tea Shop in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. After visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, I had tea at this place located behind the main hall. Around Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, Umegae mochi seems to be a famous specialty. There is a plum tree called "Hibai" in the precincts, said to have flown here following Sugawara no Michizane, and there are various souvenirs with plum motifs. I ordered a matcha set with Umegae mochi. Along with the mochi, dried plum was also included, and biting into it in between the mochi was a great combination. It was very delicious. Thank you for the meal.

The specialty of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is "Ume-gaeshi Mochi", and if you visit, you must try it. There are many shops along the approach and within the shrine grounds. One of the most famous is Koyamada Teahouse, a long-established shop located near the main hall. With a history of 350 years, they have preserved the taste of the past since the Edo period. They are said to be the official supplier of Ume-gaeshi Mochi for Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine ceremonies. The shop is quite large and popular as a dining spot as well. The Ume-gaeshi Mochi, freshly baked at the shop, costs 120 yen each. The skin is crispy and chewy, with a fragrant aroma. The not-too-sweet red bean paste filling is delicious. It offers a unique and delicious taste compared to others.

Visited Kamado Shrine and then Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine for a prayer. Missed the chance to have lunch, so decided to try the Dazaifu specialty, Ume-gaeshi Mochi, as a substitute. Instead of lining up at the shops along the approach from the station to the shrine, I chose a shop located behind the shrine. There were many plum trees outside the shop, and some people were enjoying their mochi at the outdoor seating while admiring the beautiful plum blossoms. I opted for the coffee set (comes with 1 piece of Ume-gaeshi Mochi) to relax after a lot of walking. It had been about a year and a half since I last tried Ume-gaeshi Mochi with a local on the approach to the shrine. The mochi was served warm (maybe reheated?). The red bean paste was unevenly distributed, but once you reached it, the flavor was delicious. The mochi was quite large, so it was satisfying to eat.

Here you can enjoy the special Ume-gaeshi mochi offered by Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It is not well known, so there are few wise people who come to enjoy the Ume-gaeshi mochi at the outer garden behind the main hall. During the plum season, you can enjoy it elegantly while gazing at the plum blossoms. There is no other shop that can rival the taste and blessings here, so it is always a pleasure to visit Koyamada Tea Shop for souvenirs.

Located behind Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, this eatery offers the famous Ume-gaeshi mochi for 120 yen. Despite just being one piece of mochi, they kindly provided a seat and even served tea. I tried Ume-gaeshi mochi from four different shops near Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, and although they were all priced the same, each had its own unique characteristics. I found the Ume-gaeshi mochi from this place to have the best balance between the mochi and red bean paste, and the sweetness and cooking method of the red bean paste made it the most delicious in my opinion.

Born in Dazaifu and raised in Dazaifu Tenmangu Kindergarten! My grandparents only buy Ume-gaeshi mochi here. It's a small mountain village tradition for it to be offered to Deity Michizane in the shrine every day. Local people buy it here! You can also enjoy light meals like champon and udon inside the store! Stop by here when visiting Tenmangu Shrine!

Fukuoka City is often referred to as "Hakata", which is known for being lively and the final stop for the Shinkansen. There was debate in the city council about whether to use Fukuoka or Hakata as the name, but it was eventually settled with Fukuoka City and Hakata Station. The group met at Shin-Osaka Station and everyone was on time. The clean Ohoridori Street in Hakata, Fukuoka City, with many prominent businesses representing Kyushu. The Kannon Temple, once the central temple in Kyushu, with Japan's oldest Bonsho bell and many important Buddhist statues. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to the god of learning, Sugawara no Michizane, who was exiled from Kyoto to Dazaifu and died there, leading to the shrine's establishment. We enjoyed the famous Matsugae Mochi with sweet bean paste at the Kosanda Teahouse inside the shrine. The mochi was dense and satisfying, with a crispy outer layer and plenty of sweet bean paste. Little did we know that U, who ate four of these mochi at once, would later regret his decision.

It's nice to stroll along the approach to Dazaifu and try the Umegae mochi, but it's hot now so it's better to cool off at the tea house on the premises. It may take a bit longer to come out, but the young people were working hard to bake the mochi! The taste was perfect.

Although the plum blossoms were not blooming, it was a perfect moment under the plum tree enjoying plum rice cakes and hot coffee instead of matcha. It brought peace and tranquility to my body and soul!
