G‐G-MOMOCHI
Located in a residential area on the east side of Imajuku Higashi in Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City, this Chinese restaurant is a hidden gem. Run by talented chefs Junichiro Kataoka and Yasutoshi Ikomoto, who honed their skills at top-notch establishments such as the Chinese restaurant "Taikanen" at Hotel New Otani, this restaurant opened in the fall of Reiwa 1st year after renovating the father's woodworking shop. The authentic Chinese cuisine they create is meticulously crafted with attention to detail. Using seasonal vegetables and fish from Itoshima, the dishes highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients while adding extra care to seasoning and presentation, providing a high-quality dining experience reminiscent of a luxury inn. Not only the taste of the dishes, but also the presentation, use of tableware, interior and exterior of the restaurant, and social media presence are all top-notch. Although it may be a bit challenging to find, this restaurant is sure to gain increasing recognition in the future. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, this Chinese restaurant opened its doors, facing a difficult start. However, by focusing on reservation-only dinner courses for two or more people priced at ¥3,600 or more, as well as lunch, bento box sales, and online sales of side dishes, the restaurant has attracted a growing number of enthusiasts who appreciate its offerings. I am one of those enthusiasts. Recommended by a young colleague who is a foodie living in the Imajuku area of Nishi-ku, I visited the restaurant for lunch with my colleague. The restaurant, renovated from a former woodworking shop, exudes a simple and clean atmosphere with a touch of elegance. Upon entering, we were greeted by a friendly young female staff member and seated at a table in the back of the restaurant. The lunch menu included options such as Mapo Tofu Lunch Set for ¥1,188, Hana Tori Fugetsu Lunch Set for ¥1,408, and Plate Lunch Set for ¥1,628. I chose the Hana Tori Fugetsu Lunch Set, which allows you to select two main dishes from a rotating selection of four dishes named after flowers, birds, wind, and moon. My colleague opted for the Plate Lunch Set, which features six dishes on a single plate. I selected the "Wind" dish, which was a fluffy egg and shrimp in chili sauce, and the "Moon" dish, which was stewed glass noodles and steamed chicken. The dishes were served with rice, salad, soup, dessert, and coffee. The shrimp in chili sauce was made with large soft-shell shrimp in a spicy chili sauce, and the fluffy egg added a nice touch to the dish. The rice was delicious and had a nice texture, and the complimentary rice refill was a nice bonus. The stewed glass noodles and steamed chicken were flavorful and satisfying. Overall, the dining experience at this restaurant was delightful, and I look forward to visiting again.
